Then one day on a train back from a follow-up hospital visit, he received profuse thanks from an elderly woman for offering her his seat. That touched his heart, restoring his self-esteem.

Just shows that random/small acts of kindness do make a difference. Quite a powerful, albeit slightly depressing, article. And thanks for Sawato san for putting what he went through into words, very insightful.

Suffering from massive depression and zero self esteem he hits rock bottom and gets up the courage to end it all, but doesn't jump from high enough...I'm glad he turned his life around, but I'm not sure he should be giving out any advice.
