He will only be PM for a couple of months at most, now that he decided to quit, and just what can he focus on with regards to the vaccinations?

He is for all intents and purposes, a lame duck, and his opposition with the LDP is going to do whatever they can to ensure THEIR policies are pushed to the forefront!

He only decided to resign, because he KNOWS he would be proverbially fired!

A nurse at a Tokyo hospital criticized the policy as being out of touch with reality, saying it shows how the government was "totally not aware of the situation on ground."

His response why he want to skip reelection is he want to focus on covid response but is it really matter his response so far?

"There is not a single COVID policy that can be praised, and whatever comes out of the government comes out hollow," said the 47-year-old nurse said. This nurse would clearly do a better job than any member of ldp

At this point, nothing he does is going to be correct. Stay on and be criticised, quit and be criticised too. That's not to say I pity him, the sooner he goes the better!

Political seppuku...hard to see when someone has devoted their entire life to something and, just when it seems to have been worth the sacrifice, it goes so horribly wrong. I don't know what all Suga-san may have done or what some may feel he deserves, to witness any Human crushed under the vagaries of Human life in so humiliating a way is not something that can bring joy to the soul but only sadness in reminding us once again what this place can be for anyone. Keep moving, nothing to celebrate here, especially for Japan. And better luck to the next one who thinks sitting in that seat is worth doing. It didn't look that way from here...

His resignation.....was met Friday with surprise and criticism by many people in Japan, with medical workers lamenting his slow and inadequate response to fight the virus.

Criticism? Don't you guys want this moron out? He hasn't made one good decision nor done one thing right. Abe was bad, but this guy was a nothing.

Bring in some common sense leadership please. From any party will do.

Imagine if people here met politicians with criticism BEFORE an election instead of after a resignation, when it's utterly meaningless.

This really is surprising.

Worst PM in decades if not ever...no leadership, no vision, no charisma.

That title goes to Shinzo Abe who much more cunning and evil than Suga is.

I think he was quite a good mirror of Japan though, he feels like an old salaryman that has put all his time into his job, where he has done nothing of value or creativity just to provide for a family that doesn't really care about him.

I'd say he's more like an old salaryman who is watching his family inside a burning house, and in response, tells them that they can only use the fire extinguishers after 8pm, and he will call the fire department after he's finished watching the Olympics.

Not surprised at all. He never seemed to want to be PM in the first place.

Abe left him a huge mess which he was unable to deal with.

Having said that, as one of Abe's right hand men, he helped create that mess to begin with.

Where’s Charles Atlas when you need him. Once again we’re treated to the unedifying spectacle of the people having sand kicked in their faces, mocked by well connected practitioners of the political dark arts and their fait accompli pronouncements. In this supposedly consensus driven society, there’s a palpable absence of public discussion preceding key decisions and very little sense that people feel invested in the political process . Little wonder there’s a reigning sense of fatalistic resignation to whatever is dished up. Even as an outsider, it’s depressing to observe how resigned the masses are to their lot.

I'd say that is probably a more accurate description, just keeping it moderate for the admins :P. But as others have said he most likely never wanted to be pm, and I'm interested in what he was promised in exchange for taking the blame for the pandemic and the olympics.

This reminds me somewhat (I was 8 at the time) when Richard Nixon decided to resign. I found out later as an adult (on a PBS special) about his dirty deeds and him being caught with his mitts in the cooky car. Facing impeachment, he quit. Then his replacement Gerald Ford pardoned him of everything and that pissed off alot of people in America.

Now Suga has egg on his face and mud on his shoes from his conduct and lack of direction from the pandemic and from kissing Bach/IOC fanny and hosting the Olympics anyway, making things worse. just a hunch.
