Better watch what flag you are burning, soon it will be yours when China takes over. China wants you more than the rocks in the sea.

agree with Ninoh, Taiwan, careful who you make friends with

10 ( +11 / -1 )

When our compatriots in the mainland are striving to protect the Diaoyu islands, we people in Taiwan cannot remain silent,

Kind of contrary to the last bout of Taiwan being concerned about China hitting them with missiles isn't it?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

The trouble with flag burning is that people think a flag represents the government they protest, when it actually represents the country.

Many Japanese also disagree with the government about a great many things.

hawaiianboy wrote "if one chinese, taiwanese, one korean does something bad, they judge the whole race. "

That is common everywhere, and its evident with these fools burning the Japanese flag.

But there are also people everywhere who realize the people of a country are all different with different opinions and cannot be blamed for what their government chose to do.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Those so called Taiwanese activists are actually Communist plants in Taiwan. The Chinese want the support of Taiwan, but regardless, most of Taiwan knows that the only reason why Taiwan exists was due to the help of Japan at the end of WWII. The Commies were going to kill off millions of Chinese and with the protection of the Japanese army they escaped to Taipei. So Taiwan won't support mainland China. Also, Japan is the only reason why Taiwan hasn't been invaded by China - they fear that Japan would protect Taiwan too.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

My guess Beijing sends many spies there to pretend they are Taiwanese and pull BS like this.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Here we go again:

More than 100 Taiwanese activists

More than 100!

There were easily more than 100,000 at the Anti-Osprey demonstration in Okinawa, but they tried to downplay that to "thousands."

100 out of a population of 24,000,000!

NOTHING to get steamed up about.

iWorld

So, Japan is having island disputes with Russia, South Korea, Taiwan and China, all of its neighbors. Maybe perhaps the problem are not your neighbor, but you?

iWorld try to think more before posting.

We're on a site about japan, so of course the news are going to focus on japan relations, making it looks like japan is the problem.

But the neighbors have their share of territorial disputes with other countries too :

Japan : 3 ongoing dipsutes Russia : 12 China : 20 South Korea : 4 Taiwan : 21

6 ( +6 / -0 )

100 people on one flag?! Guess they didn't have the budget for more flags. These people might perform their irrational acts in Taiwan but I doubt they are your typicIcal Taiwanese person.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Wrong flag, they should be burning that red one with the yellow stars - after all, China is causing more trouble for Taiwan than Japan is.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Maybe the U.S. needs to rethink protecting Taiwan if they love the mainland so much.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Taiwan should be hoping and praying that the US intervenes to protect the sovereignty of the Senkakus as part of Okinawa in this dispute.

If it doesn't and the PRC is allowed to march in with its military to retake them, how secure does that leave Taiwan, given that the US won't even defend the territory of the host nation of its forces in the face of Chinese aggression.

This is a litmus test for China to check if the US still has the military and political will to stand up to China to defend Taiwan from aggression. There's a lot more at stake than these uninhabited islands.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

BurakuminDesSep. 19, 2012 - 09:18AM JST Actually, Japan is not permitted to engage in military activity abroad. Japan - constitutionally and in reality - would >never get involved if Taiwan was attacked by China. The World Police - the US - may consider it though.

The US has the world's largest aircraft carrier. It;s called Japan.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Stupid Taiwanese! Burn the Japanese flag now and get ready to be SLAVES to BEIJING real soon!

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Yup with the words "Promote Unified China" written within the flags in back of the picture. LOL

3 ( +3 / -0 )

iWorld:

Will Japan ever come to term with the atrocities it have committed against its neighbor and sincerely apologize and work with its neighbors?

Or will it continue to hide in the Shadows of the Americans and be a coward?

It's people like you who create tensions like these... this is a dispute over the ownership of uninhabited islands near a possible gas field, meaning money! Chinese aggression... again. Remember Tianenmen Square... China is a monster, killing its own people. They believe they can overcome everything by sheer brute force.

The Taiwanese leader is the only person saying anything reasonable and intelligent in this report.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

That is not true. Actually Japan can engage in military activity. Japan Air Self-Defense Force has been utilized in U.S. and U.N. military conflicts in the middle east and Afghanistan and Pakistan. And Japan can unilaterally execute military force in cases of National security. So if Japan feels threaten by China and they surmise that it would be in the best interest of Japan to protect Taiwan, believe me, they will. If Japan feels threatened by N.Korea, they will launch missiles and bomb the crap out of those commies too.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Keep in mind that despite widespread anti-mainland sentiment in both Taiwan and Hong Kong, they do have significant pro-mainland minorities, so these small-scale protests should not be taken as a sign of a sea change in public opinion. I'm sure that anti-unification Taiwanese are completely aware that supporting China in this dispute would be sealing their own fate.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

"When our compatriots in the mainland are striving to protect the Diaoyu islands, we people in Taiwan cannot remain silent,” said a spokesman for the small Union Party, the organizer of the protest."

Your compatriots? Oh, really?

I've got an idea, Union Party asshats. How about you go ahead and push for official recognition of Taiwan in the United Nations as a free and independent state and see just how deep this camaraderie with the Mainland actually runs.

Besides religion, I can think of few things that bring out abysmal stupidity in people faster than Nationalism.

"Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou has said Taipei has no intention to work with Beijing, mindful that doing so could hurt the island’s ties with Japan."

Meanwhile, here's a man who clearly understands the deeper implications of throwing in with Mainland China on this territorial issue. It would be paramount to telling China, "Continental shelf borders? Oh, heavens. You're right. Taiwan's all yours. Come and get her."

Not going to happen, nor would the U.S. let it.

The thing is, China can attempt to leverage economic threats all it wants, but it's winning very few fans among its neighbors. Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, India -- and now Japan -- are engaged in active disputes with China over what can only be described as a new breed of Imperialism. Once you've run out of trading partners to buy your manufactured goods, what else have you got left to sustain an "economic miracle" that is already beginning to show signs of fatigue and slowdown? A deomestic population that is still by-and-large impoverished?

Good luck with that formula, China.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

This article forgot to mention that most of the protesters here were offered free lunch and a $50 coupon for their support.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Taiwans President Ma Ying-jeou has said Taipei has no intention to work with Beijing, mindful that doing so could hurt the islands ties with Japan.

The only important sentence in the article.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Athletes

The so called "Joint Exploration" only included the part within the disputed area and did include any part within PRC EEZ which essencially means "Yours is mine and mine is mine". LOL

2 ( +2 / -0 )

japanese dont think like that. if one chinese, taiwanese, one korean does something bad, they judge the whole race. They have very simple minds.

Meanwhile in China...

Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou has said Taipei has no intention to work with Beijing, mindful that doing so could hurt the island’s ties with Japan.

Finally a politician with some common sense.

The US has the world's largest aircraft carrier. It;s called Japan.

US also has the largest creditor for lifting the debt ceiling beyond constitution. It is called as People Republic of China. China is a banker of US.

How about Germany? Who is a loser and villian of WWII? Germany: 0 for territory dipute! Germany:100 for helping struggling economies of neighbours! Unlike Germany, Japan does not get along with neighbours! It takes TWO TO DANCE THE TANGO! China is noisy! Japan is arrogant!

Here we a go again.

Could some one provide a light to this ignorant soul?

Geez it's been the arguement had been so often posted I really lost count.

How on earth you are potraying someone else "ignornat soul". It is inpolite! That Islands have been existed for millions of years before 2012. Why did Japan was very quiet for dispute before and so aggressive in 2012? I am not a China or Taiwan fan as I posted before. Territory gain and loss are not justified by historical settlement or bidding as auction! Truth is China lost the war to Japan in 1895. Therefore Japan was a rightful owner of Senkaku or Diagyu from 1895. Then Japan lost the war to Allies in 1945. That territory was under US admin until 1971. US did not confirm who or who was a legitimate owner for souverign. It is up to ICJ for settlement for territory dispute.

YuriOtaniSep. 20, 2012 - 09:41AM JST

Athletes, the Ryukyu Island chain is even closer. You are measuring from Kyushu or one of the "home" islands. The question is what do most of the Taiwanese population think? Do they support the union party and reunion with Red China?

Do u know Ryuku chain was Independent kingdom until 1897! It became part of Japan less than 115 years! That Island chain has many dotted small isles. If we follow all along the chain it will be further and further from Japan and closer and closert to Taiwan or Phillipines. Japan has no moral high ground for drawing her own map. Japan surrendered uncondinatinally in 1945. The loser has to abide the rules of winner Allied forces.

China also can not claim all Ryuku chain isles. It was never owned by Qing Dynasty of China. Of course Ryuku has tribunal relationship with China. However it was not a colony of Ancient China. Both Japan and China has to give up their claim which was far away from their mainland! It is according the Geography not by history or invasion with force!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

@OssanAmerica: yes, no need for US to protect anything as they can't even protect their own people in Middle East.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Heh, working with China............. like China is gonna share the islands with Taiwan, as if! They want it all for themselves.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Burn a flag? Oh how original puppet state of china.

The so called "Joint Exploration" only included the part within the disputed area and did include any part within PRC EEZ which essencially means "Yours is mine and mine is mine". LOL

After reading your post, I check the world map of PRC EEZ. According microscope, that Islands are pretty close to Taiwan. It may be less than 200 km from China. It may be more than 2000 km from Japan. As you knew China lost the sino-japanese war! They lost some territories. I am not sure whether they have rights to claim them back. It is not my concern! As a Geography it is more Taiwan than both China and Japan. It is closer to Islands than both China and Japan.

I saw both boundary of Chinese and Japanese dotted line, Japanese line is very far from Japan and very close to China. Therefore Japan is greedy about drawing their own map. As you said both Japan and China maps are LOL. They were both loser of wars and no moral grounds for claiming that Islands which neglected for thousand of years. USA is legitimate owner of Senkaku because US owned the whole Japan after WWII. It was a big mistake for changing admin back to Japan.

More than 100 Taiwanese activists burnt a Japanese flag

Out of a Nation of what? 23,000,000 people? So you are just going to lump everyone in the same boat and call them ignorant? unable to think?

Even with the occupation of Taiwan by Japanese forces preceding WWII many Taiwanese still harbor no ill will towards Japan. Many are against reunification with China, even.

Why let the loud screeches of a few dictate your view of the masses?

You would think someone with such privilege as to be able to "visit Hong Kong every year" would have more sense in their noggin's

I'll take your comments for the peanuts that they are. Good day to you sir.

All those historic facts mean nothing. Less than 200 years ago, the U.S. had treaties with Native Americans. The U.S. isn't planning on giving back land to them or even back to Mexico, which used to own most of the western half of America until 1848. The U.S. owns ALL of it now.

Back in 19th century, Europeans have successfully eliminate native Americans. The other impolite words is Genociding or slaughtering natives. Unlike US, Japan was not successful in slaughtering Chinese. They tried in 1938. The problem is there are too many Chinese in China. Genociding Ants will be easier than Genociding Chinese! It is not quite easy for buchering 1.3 billions people.

Back in 19th century, European settlers were cruel, greedy and uncivilzed. That sort of that barbaric act will not repeat again in today modern world. As you said Mexico was a loser of war. Therefore US claimed some territory as trophy. For Japan case, Japan was a Mexico of WWII. US alone did not defeat Japan in WWII. There were many Allies nations contributed. Therefore US alone could not give trophy of territory to Japan as you mentioned. Handling admin back to Japan does not mean US has veto power for deciding who will own the territory. It is not a UN security council.

Current US Defence secretary is in China and he made it clear that US will not biased to Japan for territory dispute. He suggest both Japan and China has to compromise for peaceful settlement. As a civilian, I do not want to be biased and back up to everyone. Truth is Japan wants a trophy! US have to do a heavy lifting. When Marines were kicked off, local said they were the social and economic burden! Now they are changning their tone! It is just double standard!

It is disrespectful for blaming JT poster for creating tensions---! Last year, Japan was under mercy of natural disasters and nuclear radiation. Many nations have sympathy about Japanese suffering. Even Taiwan and China sent their disaster relief team and donations. Many Chinese cities were collecting the donations for Japan contrary to explosive protests what we saw in TV. Why did 2011 and 2012 is different like day and night? The answer is current right wing J government!

If there is no provocation, Bees will not sting! It is true that China has over reacted for J PM purchase! In the past, Chinese president Hu visited Japan and offered joint exploration of mineral resources like Taiwan offer too. Now he became different person because he does not want to be seen as weak person before he leave the office. The dumbest leader is current J PM Noda who is not only damaging Japanese image, but also economy. Japan has been in recession since 1991 and never fully recovered. Since he took the office, he is focusing on his narrow personal interest instead of national economy and social issue! He will not last long in office too.

ares7:This article forgot to mention that most of the protesters here were offered free lunch and a $50 coupon for their support.

What? someone must has stolen my money! the other day I took part in the protest against China in Tokyo, they only paid me 50 Yuan & a small susi~

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

What kind of corny statistics are you stating? Taiwan was already occupied by people before the war. Japan helped the Chinese escape from the Commies, millions of them. They were lucky to have been transported out of China to nearby islands. Taiwan and S.Korea owes Japan for their economic development after WWII that is a fact. No one wants to hear the truth.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Flyfalcon - Japan doesn't want a trophy island. Japan just wants it territorial rights protected, which was agreed upon by international treaty - specifically the Treaty of San Francisco. If the U.S. does not enforce this treaty then basically Japan will end up selling about $1 Trillion worth of U.S. Bonds. What would be the outcome of that? U.S. Bankruptcy.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

This just proves that there are lots of stupid people in Taiwan too!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The trouble with flag burning is that people think a flag represents the government they protest, when it actually represents the country. Many Japanese also disagree with the government about a great many things.

A country exists BECAUSE of the government. And last time I checked Japan was a representative democratic nation. If they disagreed, then maybe they could vote for somebody else? Like say, Ishihara or Hashimoto? Oh wait...

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Does anyone remember ex PM Hatoyama's call for the creation of an all Asian fraternity? Perhaps it could be set up and renamed as a "BRATernity"!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Elbuda Mexicano: Stupid Taiwanese! Burn the Japanese flag now and get ready to be SLAVES to BEIJING real soon!

Current Internationally agreed laws states that Japan owns the Senkaku islands and is the rightful owner since 1895.

Taiwan and S.Korea was an Allie of Japan in WWII. The people of Taiwan are ignorant. When the Chinese commies were slaughtering all those people in Nanjing and blaming it on the Japanese, right at the end of WWII, Japan helped most of those people move to Taiwan. And when the S.Koreans were getting attacked by the N.Korean commies, who was there to help S.Korea? Japan. So you Taiwanese better start thinking or else you will end up losing everything to the communists - your factories, your schools, your homes. I visit Hong Kong every year. The people there are NOT happy. The people are getting more and more poor while the commies get rich. They can't even stop the government from taking their homes away and tearing them down to build hotels and office buildings.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Also, Japan is the only reason why Taiwan hasn't been invaded by China - they fear that Japan would protect Taiwan too.
