Referred to as "comfort women", more than 200,000 women were sexually enslaved by Japan's military during World War II, mostly from South Korea but also from other parts of Asia.

Hiroshima is now the altar for absolution. World leaders are brought here for sanctification.

"This piece of history will not disappear due to the death of the grandmas."

Finally at rest. The earthly Trauma has ceased.

Never, ever, talked about or mentioned in any of the discussions regarding "comfort women" are silent one's.

Japanese women who were forced, one way or another, into sexual slavery, during WW2 and following it. Japan lost, so their stories are never discussed openly, but believe me, many suffered too!

Be nice for JT and other media outlets to tell their stories.

And basically confirming that this topic isn't going anywhere

"(The government) has continued to express concerns to the Japanese government... and urge the Japanese side to face our demand to apologize and compensate Taiwanese 'comfort women' and their families

Oh, you mean like this?

or like this?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_war_apology_statements_issued_by_Japan

Or mayby even this?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2001/oct/09/japan.china

Japan has made large payments and countless apologies to China and South Korean comfort women copious amounts of times! If you do something and apologize wholeheartedly, I don't think more apologies should be needed! The past is done and shall never repeat itself. Its past the time to move on.

Taipei's Women Rescue Foundation said, even with the death of the last "grandma", they would continue to demand that Japan compensate victims.

So the group will continue to demand compensation. And if Japan pays it, who does it go to? Sounds to me like the "group" are looking to keep funding their activities.

Taiwan is in stark contrast to South Korea, as they do not turn past WWII issues into a diplomatic/political issue in their relations with Japan.

We must still remember so that it doesn't occur again. Just like the Holocaust and all WW2 crimes.

The last "comfort woman" in Taiwan has died. But the shame of Japan's enslavement of so-called comfort women will live on.

> Japanese women who were forced, one way or another, into sexual slavery, during WW2 and following it. Japan lost, so their stories are never discussed openly, but believe me, many suffered too!

Many people have suffered for the shameful crimes of Japan's fascist regime and the aftereffects of the war. In college I read a (translated) book by a Japanese author about how after the war the people realized that they were lied to by the fascist leaders. Hideki Tojo and his ministers committed gross crimes against humanity; against millions in the Orient/East Asia, Pacific and beyond. But the Japanese public were misled and suffered too, with all the shame from these sickening war crimes done in their name.

It's time to heal but we must never forget.

Many of the "prostitutes" were under the age of 20, some as young as 12. 0r taken against their will, or thought they would be a nurse on the battlefield. The term "comfort woman" is a translation of the Japanese ianfu (慰安婦), which literally means "comforting, consoling woman".

Military brothels (German: Militärbordelle) were set up by Nazi Germany during World War II ... young women for sexual slavery at brothels run by the German military.

According to records, at least 34,140 European women were forced to serve as prostitutes during the German occupation of their own countries along with female prisoners of concentration camp brothels.

> The term "comfort woman " waters down too much the reality of what they were. Sex slave is more accurate.

No "Military Prostitutes" would be correct. They were not slaves, they were paid and taken care of as they were employed by the Imperial Japanese Army. Both Germany amd France had similar military brothel systems.

"Comfort Women" is a euphemism by western standards, but such labeling is common in East Asian cultures. In South Korea, the military prostitutes that folllowed the US troops during the Korean War were called Bianfu, which in Japanese is Ianfu, ie; Comfort Women.

Real "Sex Slaves" are the victims of Human Trafficking that is going on today.

OssanAmerica.

The women were not liberated, they surrendered to the US military in Burma and were transported to India for interrogation. A British uncle of mine was fighting in Burma. It wasn't only the Americans.

Hundreds of thousands of POWs.

They would have many reasons to lie since most were of low education and could have been charged with helping the enemy. They had lived under the brutal regime of the JIA in a battlefield.

You lack common sense in that you have posted that document for the time from the beginning.

You cannot asset a situation of say, more than 100,000 CW based on the interrogation of 20 young Korean girls.

I didn't deny anything stated in the interrogation document by the Psychological Warfare Team. That is some title.

I said if people want to learn about the CW then it would be better to read all the documents and reports found on the Asian Women Fund, which I have done several times.

Nothing of such magnitude as the CW can be based on a single short document of an interrogation.

The document calls them "girls" not "women".

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The sad reality is that those women were recruited by locals and was commercialy operated.

Same thing is happining now in Philipine and lots of places around the US military bases .

Its just an extortion.

This report is from the United States Army during WWII who liberated a "Comfort Station". This is during the war when the US had no reason to alter or hide any facts that could be used against the Japanese.

The investigation showed that the military prostitutes were paid, and received medicalcare.

CW fanatics remain in denial of such first hand evidence, preferring to advance a false narrative. Truth alsways comes out, even if it takes a long time.

To start the term Comfort Women, a euphemism that preserves the honor, respect and dignity of these women.

"The 'comfort woman' issue is a wound in human history and the government has attached great importance to the dignity and welfare of former Taiwanese (survivors)," Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Jeff Liu said Tuesday.

"(The government) has continued to express concerns to the Japanese government... and urge the Japanese side to face our demand to apologize and compensate Taiwanese 'comfort women' and their families,"

Little doubt, this tragedy, a disgrace, an abhorrent violation, rape and other sexual violence are crimes against humanity.

Weighted against modern day Japan, it's people, an undeniably peaceful nation, a culture that is devoted to quote rectitude, courage, benevolence, respect, honesty, honor, loyalty, and wisdom. Time has brought a more compassionate society.

With reflection, benefit of hindsight, the whole Comfort Woman, the distress, agony suffered required a independent commission to recommend a way forward devoid of political interference.

It is wise to accept the continued insistence, need to demand apologies from J government, for restitution, may require an approach that undertakes a more nuanced historical need for retribution.

There it is for all to see. Some sort of full on libertarianism or something. It was completely transactional, that sexual act with 12 year olds and other minors..

they were paid and taken care of

OssanAmerican

your approach to basing your conclusions on that single document is unscientific. There is a library of info on the Asian Women's Fund site.

from the military reported you posted.

"RECRUITING:

Early in May of 1942 Japanese agents arrived in Korea for the purpose of enlisting Korean girls for "comfort service" in newly conquered Japanese territories in Southeast Asia. The nature of this "service" was not specified but it was assumed to be work connected with visiting the wounded in hospitals, rolling bandages, and generally making the soldiers happy. The inducement used by these agents was plenty of money, an opportunity to pay off the family debts, easy work, and the prospect of a new life in a new land, Singapore. On the basis of these false representations, many girls enlisted for overseas duty and were rewarded with an advance of a few hundred yen."

So none knew they would be CM/prostitutes.

Unfortunately, little media will report this news in Japan.

These women were liberated by the US Army. They were not being interrogated by the IJA. THey had no reason to lie about anything. In fact, if we follow the narrative that all CWs were "forced" or "enslaved" they should have spilled the beans on anything and everything that could be used against the Japanese. Let's use a little common sense. One singular report by an actual combatant in WWII and a first hand investigation is worth 10,000 alleged documents produced after the fact.

There is no doubt that the CW system included payment (compensation) as well as medical care. You can't really run a brothel without that.

The real question is how and when many or a portion of these CWs ended up in the system. No one is going to objectively undercover the historical facts if they are advancing an agenda of false allegations.

More right wing denials.

They were not paid. The contractors (pimps) the Japanese military bargained with were. They were taken care of were they? There were no nice linens, gentle persuasion, gentlemanly manners. It was a war zone with no law. Every account says that the conditions were disgustingly filthy. As the Japanese were losing the war, there was little food, water, medical supplies. Japanese soldiers got these first so very little was provided to these women. By what logic and sources do you assume they were treated well. The notion that because it was the Japanese Imperial Army, they were treated well is disgusting and racist in itself. Where do you get this stuff.

Where were these forced allied brothels? How many women were involved. Were they only German and Italian women ie: the enemy? POWs?

I'm not saying they don't exist but I've never heard of them. Is there any evidence?

Wow, I suppose you know nothing of the brothel's and "rest/comfort" stations set up by the IJA during WW2 and during the occupation. Don't be so naïve.

(If they didnt exist, MacArthur would never had to have had them all closed down, because he didn't want his "wholesome" "All American" G.I.'s bringing home any unwanted souvenir's to their wives and girlfriends. All those women didnt just decide to become hookers all at once!)

Oh and you are most definitely questioning they existed by your comment here. You are stating the very opposite just by the way you make the statement, "I'm not saying....." Easy way to cover your butt with an excuse.

If you dont think they existed, just come out and say it, and dont beat around the bush. Just because you never heard of it, doesnt mean they didnt exist. There is plenty on the subject of "brothels" in Japan during WW2 and during the occupation on the web. Do a little research!

If there are Japanese comfort women, I doubt that the Japanese media would want to promote their story. Some would not want to be identified for fear of backlash especially from the Japanese right wing.

No kidding!! Wow, this is about the biggest double face palm comment that I have read here in a long, long time! I know intimately WHY, and I know intimately WHY the media doesnt either.

BUT that does not forgive the media for not talking about it. It's all a part of the shame and cover up of so many other things related to Japan and WW2 that never get talked about.

Which makes it easier for the government to whitewash the history and make people think Japanese were victims in the war and not the aggressors!

Imagine how Japanese comfort women would be treated in Japan.

Yeah and just imagine how it must have felt for all these women who had to suffer in silence, and the host of others who literally left Japan because they had been pregnant or gave birth to "half" children.

There are a host of them living around countless US military bases in the US, who gave up their "Japanese" side and lived in their own self-imposed shame, just for surviving.

What part of "I'm not saying they didn't exist' don't you understand. Put away your oversensitive assumptions, relax and take a deep breath. You regardless agree, though with unwarranted moral high ground, about my points involving the media and how they would've been treated. Thanks for that.

According to this article which echoes most others, they were well paid though some may have been coerced.

https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna18355292

Quite different from Asian comfort women who were not paid. Payments were made to 'contractors' essentially pimps but the women themselves were not paid. As they operated in war zones and no law, there was rape and murder. Though I can understand their shame, psychological damage, and stigma attached, their situation isn't the same as Asian comfort women used by the Japanese military.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

Japan will shove Hiroshima and Nagasaki in your face all day forever. Comfort women, Unit 731, the Bataan Death March, experiments on Chinese, the Rapae of Nanking? Oh, let's forget about that already. They were decades ago and we've done enough
