Takashimaya selling Y18.9 mil gold 'Osechiryori' boxes

Department store operator Takashimaya said Wednesday it is selling three commemorative gold boxes for New Year "Osechiryori" food delicacies to mark its 180th anniversary.

The special boxes, with three layers, are made from 18-karat gold and weigh 3.35 kilograms. Takashimaya said it is selling only three of them for 18.9 million yen each for New Year and is accepting orders until Oct 11. If more than three people apply, the department store said it will choose the buyers by a lucky draw.

Accepting orders like there are a lot to order. It is only three, and the amount of gold in it is small. Rip Off...but some rich talento will buy it, fill it with food, and everyone will scream ooishiiiiiiiiiii

But are they microwave and dish washer safe?

How about a discount for cash?

Poorly written article. Look how short it is for one.

Are they selling them for 18.9 million yen a piece, or for all three? How can they be taking orders for so long, when there are only THREE? How much are they WORTH, gold wise? Why is this news?

If the article is going to be incomplete, don't print it.

LOL to JapanGal's comment on everyone screaming "oishii" when filled with food.

Not sure if i would like that Gold after-taste in my food.

I don't think gold leaves an after-taste, but spending 18.9 mil on a lunch box when you could have gotten one at the 100Yen shop and so many people in the world(even in Japan) are suffering might leave a bitter after-taste.

fancy bento boxes. i know this is a non-intelligent comment to make, but what can you expect from something so totally non-news-worthy

A 3 kg radiation-proof bento box. Just what I need. Can I mail-order one?

That will be fine zichi. Just dont bring it to close to the reactors in Fukushima or it will quickly loose it's value as it trans-mutates into mercury. Hey that might be whats causing that strange taste after all.

I've place my order for one, only two left!

"but some rich talento will buy it, fill it with food, and everyone will scream ooishiiiiiiiiiii".

Does this make me a Talento?

Is this what economy experts call it 'dead assets?'

Article say each.

And yes Mike you are talento. Ur girl friend said that.

Shouldn't this type of conspicuous consumption be taxed at more than 5%................?

"18,900,000 yen gold container"

Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Who would buy one of these when thousands of people in Tohoku are still without homes/jobs?

Who would buy one of these when thousands of people in Tohoku are still without homes/jobs?

exactly. Takashimaya should donate sales proceeds (full amount) to Tohoku/Japan Red Cross !

The ¥18.9 million isn't just for the value of the box. The price also includes a paid advertisement for the fetishization of conspicuous consumption. Leopard skin pill box hat, you fat cats?

How can I buy such a precious item?If I have a lot of money 18.9 million yen, I will buy a nice car or holyday house.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So what is that, over $200,000? Oh man... I'm all for loading up on gold but not like this!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Some got money to burn :) Even if I was rich, I wouldn't buy this. To me it's a waste of money, Maybe to others, it's once in a lifetime buy. I'll rather send my money to some 3rd world country and build a school for kids. 18.9 million yen each. That is a lot of money, I'd put it to better use!

Sure, why not? Those that have money also have the right to choose how they spend it.

I'd personally rather buy a house or car, or maybe a REALLY nice bicycle for 200,000 yen. But I suppose if I had gazillions in the bank, why not? It would go well with the private jet, and maybe I could use it while sitting in the office at the new school I built in Africa.

Just make sure you don't wash them and leave them outside the door to be collected on the delivery bike later...

I would be ashamed to present this on my new year table knowing there are people in Tohoku in desperate need of help.

I'd prefer a bag of chips to that osechiryori.
