A taxi driver was killed and his passenger remains in a coma after a crash in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, on Monday.
According to police, the taxi driven by Yo Oikawa, 65, and another car collided at an intersection in Izumi Ward at around 5:10 a.m. Monday, Fuji TV reported. A woman in the back seat, identified as Hisako Suzuki, 63, suffered severe injuries and was taken to hospital where she remains in a coma, police said. Oikawa was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, police said. The driver of the other car suffered light injuries.
Police said it appeared the driver of the car went through a red light and hit the taxi.

Red light running is endemic here. Cameras plus a Y100000 fine per infraction would stamp it out, but there is no will to do anything.

Wow.... it must have been really bad if the cab driver was pronounced dead at the scene. That doesn't happen very often.

head on impact...probably the taxi driver lives but side impact? no way to survive a speeding car. You are a bowling pin ready to roll.

Just saw a truck yesterday speeding thru an intersection long after the signal turned red here in Okinawa. Scary!
