Teacher suspended for selling a lot of cows without telling the school

On March 30, the Nagasaki Prefectural Board of Education announced that they had suspended a 48-year-old male teacher at a prefectural high school for six months. The teacher was suspended for selling 62 calves that were born in the school’s barn, and while the school has not been named, most Japanese high schools don’t have barns or breed cows, so it’s likely that the teacher worked at an agricultural school.

According to the Board of Education, the man was the head of a group of teachers in charge of looking after the cows at the school, and he was required to report to the school every time a new calf was born. The school’s policy dictated that, due to the cost of keeping them fed, dairy cows were to be sold soon after their birth. However, over a period of six and a half years, a very small number of male cows had been reported as born.

Instead, the teacher sold the cows directly to traders and stockbreeders without permission and kept the money. Some of the cows that were sold, most of which were male dairy cows, were worth so much that they ended up going to auction, and the teacher pocketed 3.6 million yen.

Netizens were appalled at the teacher’s behavior, with many commenting that a stricter punishment was needed.

“This is 100 percent embezzlement. Surely someone else at the school knew about this.”

“I think there’s more to this. This smells like gang activity.”

“Only six months suspension?! At an office job you’d totally be fired for this.”

“I guess any crime that happens in a school isn’t an actual ‘crime’.”

“If no one noticed for over six years, that’s some serious mismanagement.”

Six months suspension for stealing over 3.6 million yen from your workplace certainly does seem a little mild, but considering a fellow educator in nearby Kumamoto Prefecture only got three months suspension for slapping and kicking a student, we’re not really surprised. Hopefully when the teacher returns to work, they’ll put someone else in charge of looking after the cows.

Really must have buttered up the school board and authorities to get away with just a suspension and not criminal charges.

- “if no one noticed for over six years, that’s some serious mismanagement.” -

Where’s the beef?” - But seriously, have you seen Japanese school lunches lately?

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Meanwhile, seem to recall a former PM & friends enjoyed some steak dinners during the ‘on again, off again’ SOE’s?

7 ( +10 / -3 )

You really hammed that up_, bacon.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Takes balls, to step up & see the difference between ‘bulls’ and ‘steers’.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Sorry but no, gogogo. - Not to start a ‘beef’ here, but you’re only partially right with ‘bulls’.

With all due respect, “heifers’ are females that haven’t had a calf. “Steers” are males, is in this lot, that have been castrated and will become “beef”.

*-@gogogo 8:39am: [male dairy cows] “Male's are not cows they are bulls or heifers.” -*

Should never cowtow to such ignorance and graft.

Heads should be counted and culled from the herd.

The writer of this story, and any subsequent editors, need educating with regard to bovines. "male dairy cows" indeed.

He must have know the steaks would be high and eventually get caught. The education board had a real beef with him but only gave him 6 months suspended. Guess they want some payback from the teacher.

You're on fire today! Milking this story for all it's worth.

Suspended…..NOT fired.

Udder bunch of bull.

The cud should be put out to be pasture, slaughtered or better yet just brand him, mark em with a B.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Holy cow Batman! This joker should be sweeping manure out of the stalls for a long time.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Umm… there are no male “dairy cows”. Cows are all female. Should have just said bovine.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

And then ‘some’ frequently try to bully their way out of missteps when their misinformation is pointed out.

- “male dairy cows were to be sold soon after their birth.” -

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Udderly…” Perhaps someone needs to brush up on their biology? Male cattle do not have udders. And despite any other recent confusion, Male cattle (and other male mammals) do not give birth to young nor feed their offspring milk.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

Not crying about it as admittedly a meat eater myself, just giving information about the reality. For some, maybe not so “…amoosing” if you consider what happens to these male cattle that are sold:

Male dairy cows don’t get to live more than two years”** - **The dairy industry has no use for male calves, so they're either sold for beef, sent to veal facilities, or shot shortly after they're born.

Should be MOOCHO cows, according to my Spanish-speaking friends. Apparently, it means A LOT to them.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

This is an udder embarrassment

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Agree with @Harry_Gatto. Japan as a whole (and some here may) just need better ‘teatchers’ and approved in-school, sex education.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

If he were to come to southern Japan, I’m sure the residents could tell the local authorities they have no beef here.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Should be fired on the spot and penalized 2x what he embezzled.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

This story is just made for cheesy puns.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

Lovin' the bovine related puns here, guys. Let me add to it:

The guy's punishment is a bunch of bull. His actions should have butchered any chances of keeping his job. The higher ups should have taken stock of the situation more carefully and seriously and tanned his hide. This is going to steer wanabe criminals in the wrong direction. Im honestly surprised they didn't have bigger *beef with him.

Aly, I came for the comments. Hoped for puns. Goal achieved for the most part.

If it was in Kobe, he would be a millionaire

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

This teacher was milking the system and this story sounds like udder nonsense.

Moo ve along everyone. Dairy do it again in 6 months!

Unlike other posters, I'm not having a cow over this. I think its quite common for teachers to make a profit using school property. I've had co-workers that teach language lessons using school property or to advertise their language lessons. Also, many teachers teach or coach clubs overtime and don't get paid for it. So in the larger scope of things, I don't think anyone is getting ripped off. Its typically the teachers that get the short end of the stick and have been for decades in Japan. This does seem udderly excessive though.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Anything is ok in my personal opinion, as long as no severe crimes are involved and most of all , as all the pupils without exemption leave the school with full and testified knowledge of writing, reading, speaking, calculating , advanced scientific knowledge and some art , music and ethics basics. That’s finally all what counts, how educated the youngsters leave the schools. What they all do aside of those main subjects is of no real significance and their additional voluntary hobby or club activity. I just don’t care, if or how much they have of a baseball team, a school orchestra or in this case here , are breeding some cows for whatever studies or sales, if they have too much time and money left and can afford the efforts physically too, why not?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Some try to steer the posts. The teacher didn't get a hefty punishment. Others would have been criminally charged and imprisoned for lesser offenses.

Unless he bowed deeply enough and claimed he was drunk at the time? That isn't the universal defense?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

This is embezzlement. The victims are the tax payers. It should not be up to the Board of Education to decide the punishment - it is a criminal matter and the police/courts should be involved.

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

male dairy cows?!!!

Males don't have utters. That isn't milk they were getting. As calves, would they have been converted to steers already?

The teacher should have been fired for grand master bull theft.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

No shortage of "oyaji gag" here.

Cringe.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Umm… there are no male “dairy cows”.

Those only happen in California. Right? O_O

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Male cattle do not have udders.

They do if they smoke too much marijuana!

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

he was definitely "moo"tivated by money...

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Zichi - fine analysis. Case seems pretty black and white to me!

-6 ( +6 / -12 )

No exactly a Bill Gates or Steve Jobs but one must wonder how he came up with such a brilliant plan. Kidding.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

male dairy cows

Male's are not cows they are bulls or heifers

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

the posts here are far more entertaining than the story! LOL! Nice to see everyone just take a jab at puns instead of going after each others' jugulars like so many do here.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

Sigh. spoke too soon I guess.
