Whole northern hemisphere is in meltdown. Roll on October?!

If it topped out around 30, I would be fine, but 36-38 in Tokyo? Can't do anything outside comfortably. I miss my bike.

Yep - global warming deniers have no wiggle room left - it's clear to see.

And its still just become August which is the hottest month. So if you thought July was hot...

Hope to see less suit jackets and multiple layered people wearing dark clothing.

Keep hydrated and cool.

Not a single hat amongst them, bizarre. In another super hot place - Australia - it is compulsory for children to wear the school hat to/from school and in the playground, for most schools. Saves some skin cancers in later life and heatstroke for sure. Put a hat on those heads!

Perhaps don’t wanna mess up hair?, lol! Also, kids always used the sun cream in Australia when my family visited there 10 years ago, good idea for here too.

But hey, this weather is IDEAL for Olympic sports, according to the government. Anyway, getting tired of them saying it's "abnormal" for the THIRD WEEK straight. It is normal, because we've done Nothing to combat increase of températures. Watering the sidewalk and roads Don't help because they require wasteful uses of water and electricity. Start replacing cement with trees. Maybe take down the millions of above head power lines to do so.

Spain and Portugal hitting 45 yesterday. Heading up to 46 or 47.

Everybody stay safe, wherever you are.

Many people say normal or abnormal about heatwave everyday but don't matter. This is a nature, so it seems to me that we have to get accustomed to such heatwave that would come every summer. if you cant, better do something about it, better move to North pole.  Probably, 2020 summer Olympics should be cancelled or should move to October like 1964 Olympics after negotiation, though US opposed it.

Short term - stay safe everyone.

Long term - we're seeing increasing instability in the weather and are fools if we believe our ongoing behavior will only affect other people. I believe the ordinary person, even in rich countries, has very little of value to lose from combatting climate change, but is reluctant to do so due to fear and ignorance spread by the uber rich who profit from the status quo.

@ Pukey - my kids always uses sun cream in summer at school. As do I. I dont know why many Japanese and Asians think skin cancer is not an issue. Wear a hat and suncream. Especially kids on baseball team etc

Best way to combat climate change is to restart all of the nuclear plants Japan shutdown. Currently burning coal oil and natural gas while Japan's CO2 free nuclear fleet sits idle. If Japan keeps burning fossil fuel at this rate there is no chance of reaching any climate goals and scientists say it will only get worse.

Nuclear power is not a renewable resource and creates waste that lasts thousands of years, it is the ultimate in planetary pollution and utterly unnecessary given renewable technologies today. Countries around the world are meeting their energy needs without oil/gas and especially without nuclear

If a panel breaks down, you don't infect your children with cancer. I'd call that a plus

Given the magnitude of this heat, Tokyo should hold the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in October, like the last time in 1964! If this repeats next summer and in 2020!

Ganbare Japan

Australians get skin cancer cause they are geographically meant to be in England not Australia.

Interesting that after colonisation, Aussies deadliest form of cancer is melanoma. So yeah, you should wear the hats. Dont hear of skin cancer in comparison here.

I love Vancouver in the summer time very comfortable. Would have loved to see the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo but not in July-August!

3 ( +3 / -0 )

marcelto - I think things are starting to change for the better. My sons are at elementary school in Tokyo and members of football clubs and everyone is being sensible with practices being held at sensible times and clear criteria for when outdoor swimming and other exercise should be cancelled due to the heat.

ganbare japan - good to hear that you are protecting your children. Are their schools sensible with exercise during summer?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

the meteorological agency called the deadly heat in July "abnormal."

Well they are going to have to get used to calling it the new 'normal' or are they happy to shy away from inconvenient truths too?

I was outside briefly this morning and was surprised at how few people wear hats or caps. Growing in hot Australia, we always wore hats. Aren't hats fashionable for men or boys in Japan? Maybe hats don't go with their work wear during the week.

@thepersoniamnow - Australians get skin cancer cause they are geographically meant to be in England not Australia.

And, you are wrong, again! If this were so, how can you explain Asians and Africans developing skin cancer in Australia? Australians get skin cancer due to the whole in the ozone layer that allows much more UV and microwaves into the local atmosphere. The hole in the ozone layer was first detected in the late 70's and was caused by CFC (Chloro-Fluro-Carbon) gases from air conditioners, refrigerators and aerosol cans. for the 200 odd years prior to the hole in the ozone layer there were no problems with skin cancer in Australia. And now, some 40 odd years later after the use of CFC gases has been reduced the hole is closing up, which has also resulted in a drop in the amount of skin cancers in Australian youth. My generation has many skin cancers, as I do too. Japan is the land of urban myth believers.

Catch the sun while you can. 40 degrees is high. Drinking a lot of fluid can help.

Disillusioned

Yes you are often right and definately a logical person.

Heres a link about Australia, so you can see what I’m talking about and then maybe you’d be safer from skin cancer.

Point 3 proves my point and I could give you countless more.

You keep smashin my world with your facts man!

Google

The average annual melanoma rate among Caucasians is about 22 cases per 100,000 people. In comparison, African Americans have an incidence of one case per 100,000 people.

So what is that??? Aussie statistics bro. Have a nice weekend.

Back on topic please.

Fukuoka hit 39 w/ 95% humidity at 1:30 today. And yes, Many a black suit around. Note to self. Where an undershirt that covers body art under the white dress shirt. Here are some ways to beat the heat.

Life Hacker- https://lifehacker.com/5913149/top-10-ways-to-beat-the-heat

My personal favorite.

Do not use conditioning. Instead condition your body to acclimate to the weather.

Exercise, Hydrate and cool down in the pool and hydrate again.

"....a heat wave has scorched most of the continents in the Northern Hemisphere...."

Actually, a heat wave has scorched all of the continents in the Northern Hemisphere. During their summer, Southern Africa, South America, and Australia have also had very high temps and droughts. The only other continent is Antarctica, and while not exactly having a heat wave, the polar regions have seen the largest increase in temperatures of any regions on the planet. Overall, the planet is warming up, rapidly. The question now is, will humans stop the global warming that they have caused, before it is too late?

@thepersonIamnow - Aussie statistics bro. Have a nice weekend.

I am not your brother, so do not call me bro! So, you found one article that states fair-skinned Europeans are more prone to skin cancer. Good for you! It's pretty much common knowledge. However, as I stated, the high rate of skin cancers in Australia is mostly due to the hole in the ozone layer. Australia did not have an abnormal skin cancer rate prior to the damaged ozone layer.

Yep - global warming deniers have no wiggle room left - it's clear to see.

So if there are record low temperatures in the winter, is that still Global Warming.

Its just a hot summer, one hot summer doesn't mean anything.

No Disillusioned I found many articles and so would you if you looked.
