Temperature tops 40 degrees in Kochi as heat wave intensifies

The temperature soared to 40.7 degrees in Kochi Prefecture and on Saturday as a heat wave continued to cover most of Japan. It was the first time since 2007 that temperatures have topped 40 degrees in Japan.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 655 monitoring points across the country recorded temperatures higher than 30 degrees by noon Saturday, and of those, the mercury topped 35 degrees at 295 locations, TV Asahi reported. In central Tokyo, the temperature was 37.4 degrees at 2 p.m., making Saturday the hottest day of the summer so far.

Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gunma, Saitama and Miyazaki prefectures all recorded temperatures above 36 degrees, the agency said. Kyoto recorded 37.2, Nagoya 36.6 and Osaka 36.

Only parts of Hokkaido were spared the heat wave on Saturday, with Kushiro experiencing a pleasant 25 degrees.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency and health authorities urged people, especially the elderly to take precautions against heatstroke, by drinking a lot of water and using the air conditioning.

I'm sorry about your fish, Cleo.

The tap water is hot! I took clothes out of the washer yesterday and was startled at how warm they were.

nanda- yes, and I feel responsible. Amazing how much reproach can emanate from the glassy eye of a dead neon tetra. At least the water is a bit cooler today, after having the filter wrapped in icepacks overnight.

My daughter told me yesterday she thought it would be a good idea to put the paddling pool out in the garden for the tinies to splash around in and get cool, but after half an hour the water was too hot (even under the garden parasol) and they gave up.

Too hot for tropical fish.

It was difficult to walk around at the outside swimming pool because the tiles were too hot to stand on. Cycling, I had to drink more than 1 liter of water an hour. The shower at work is set to 38 degrees and is quite warm enough.

Oh, that's sad, Cleo. I am sorry.

Six of our tropical fish died today because the water in the tank is too hot, and the rest of them are looking a bit peaky. Got ice packs wrapped around the filter, but it does only so much.

I was at Tokyo Disneysea today. It has to be the most miserable day at Disneysea in my life. Literally sweating my balls off everywhere I went. There was no escaping the heat! You go inside and its so cold and your sweat feels like ice, you start to shiver then you go outside and 1 mimute later your sweating again. Just imagine your running the shower and standing in the shower room wearing clothes all day. It was that comfortable....

"24 degrees here at Butlins in Bognor Regis. Zero humidity. Got me knotted hankie, just in case. Heaven. Gloat."

Thanks, sushilover, for that post. It gives us such comfort here in Tokyo.

I was in Kochi today and my butt exploded in a ball of flames. It was a hot day.

People in Kochi are so lucky- they can save money on cooking gas since they can fry stuff on the sidewalks now, lol.

Been quite warm, so in preparation for switching on the air conditioning this year, I cleaned the filters today.

Now, how long can I resist touching that remote control, wherever it is buried... (?)

Yamanashi, Shizuoka and Miyazaki prefectures all recorded temperatures above 36 degrees, the agency said. Kyoto recorded 37.2, Nagoya 36.6 and Osaka 36.

So actually, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Miyazaki, Kyoto, Aichi and Osaka prefectures all recorded temperatures above 36 degrees?

I live in Edogawa-ku and it was 40.5 at around 12 o'clock. 36.9 in central Tokyo but where?

Thank you oil and coal industries for this oppressive weather. It is only going to get worse unless climate change is taken seriously in the US and other industrialized countries.

Yeah, I went for a 2hr stroll at lunch-time and temp was not too bad, had also a nice breeze going.

It's hot today, but not very humid, which makes a BIG difference. At least where I'm at.

That must be hot. That's close to the temperature of my bathwater.
