Temperatures soared across Japan on Tuesday, reaching 40.5 degrees in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, at 2:30 p.m. It was the highest temperature recorded in Japan so far this year as intense heat sent the mercury up in western and eastern Japan as well as the Tohoku region.
Tokyo recorded 37.3 degrees at 2 p.m. Elsewhere, the temperature rose to 40.4 degrees in Hatoyama, Saitama Prefecture, 39.2 degrees in Koga, Ibaraki Prefecture and 38.9 degrees in Toyama City, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The agency issued a warning over heatstroke, urging people to drink at least one glass of water every hour, avoid working or being outdoors for too long and use air-conditioning while sleeping at night. It also cautioned people about removing masks while outside, urging them to be at least two meters away from anyone else when they do so.

I love a fresh dip in the sea but it seems Obon is a better time to consider departed family therefore I refrain... I'm good with it because I live near the ocean and can walk from my place to a beach anytime.
I notice I'm a minority nowadays.
I remember a time when I would accompany friends to their relatives graves and we placed flowers, burned incense and said prayers. I thought it was very interesting when they would leave bottles of Japanese wine.
The sea is a good place to let salt wash germs and dead skin off your body.
Don't forget your sunscreen and hydrate.

I go to the beach every possible moment! Funny thing is Japanese go home around 5pm when it is the most pleasant time. Great seeing the sunset from the sea! The water right now is actually quite cool - close to minimum temperatures of around 25!

Being outdoors with fresh air is healthy. I don’t see how being at a beach is unhealthy.

Those two look like they were walking by the beach in the brutal heat and suddenly decided to jump in the surf fully clothed to save themselves from dying of heatstroke.

Full-On Clothes on beach? That's so Yellowish!
They will have bigger eyes if they see the western beach where teenagers wear two pieces bikinis even with their families.

How so?

Go to the beach for your health! In a pandemic? It's the most unhealthy thing you can do.

I haven't seen this on the news, but is this going to be a record hot summer?
Desert Tortoise
Combined with the sort of humidity typical of the region that is pretty ugly.

Good thing the Olympics aren't taking place.

My aircon and icemaker work great. Plenty of beer in the fridge. Plenty of whiskey, vodka, and mixers in the pantry. Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Disney+, and HBO Max all working fine.
Why would I want to go outside in this heat, and get all sweaty and sunburned? Especially at the beach where I'd get my shoes and car full of sand? I don't get it.

I enjoy going to the beach as well.

It was at least 41° in Kumagaya. Everyone knows Kumagaya is the hottest place in Japan. I went jogging at 10:30am this morning. Probably lost 3kgs of water weight. Had a cold shower when I got home. Felt great. Bring on the heat!!

Love that picture. FUN AND FREEDOM.

Just left Hokuriku. Pretty hot up there

Just took another shower after being on the beach this arvo. I look like a lobster wearing a pair of white shorts. Silly tan line on my butt that makes the wife and kid laugh as I showe’d it off with random pride.

We were in Nagano City today where it was 37.2C. 8th highest temp in August in 130 years' of records. We went to a big indoor pool so it was fun and a good place to be, but brutally hot when we got back outside.

Half of Tokyo & Yokohama seems to be cooling off in my town this week. The campsites are jammed with people figuring out how to put up a tent for the first time.
The roads also seem to be jammed with people learning how to drive for the first time.
