This is just the beginning. In the UK the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has no idea how long it will take, and how much it will cost, to clean up the Sellafield site which was shut down not by a tsunami, but just because it's 50 years old.

It's time for the world to wake up and follow Germany's lead. Nuclear generated energy is many, many times more expensive than that generated by fossil fuels and "alternatives", so much more expensive that it is currently impossible to calculate how much.
Stop worrying about CO2 emissions. THESE kind of emissions are a greater danger.

Perhaps they'd have enough money if they didn't spend the designated funds on things like promoting Skytree and renovation Tokyo government offices.
smithinjapan
Absolutely no more money for these clowns! If they are heading towards a profit again next year while still not paying out any of the compensation money, and the government uses donations and money earmarked for relief towards whaling, promotion of sky tree, contact lens factories, and highways in Okinawa -- clearly there's already more than enough money to do what's actually needed.

2% the of the GDP just to clean up the mess!!!!! How cheap was all that cheap energy now? Japan Inc. makes victims of the citizens once again.

If only the government would have the guts to use trillion yen when talking about investing in renewable energy. (not in research, but in the actual thing) Surely TEPCO is done for, but isn't this the time to give the local producers in other areas the chance to build renewables?

“It will become difficult for us to raise money from the private sector, so we will have to rely on the government for the financing of all of our business.”
This should no longer be a for profit business. They have proven that they cannot operate technically or ethically. Basically it has already become a state operation all but in name. This should be made official and then where possible the utility should be decentralized, after some European models.

if TEPCO can't afford it, aren't they bankrupt? and if they are bankrupt, shouldn't current management all be fired and a bankruptcy trustee be running the show and checking where all the money goes?

zichi - I'm guessing permission won't get given unless the right pockets are lined. Public opinion certainly won't be a factor as to whether it gets restarted or not.
gogogo
Yes yes give more money to construction companies that you already own.... bleed money from the government...
kwatt
The cost of clean up and others would double to 1000 trillion yen, not 10 trillion and possibly take more than 100 years. All taxpayers will pay for that finally.

Around and round we go--the socialization of losses...and the privatization of profits. The biggest ponzi scheme out there.
saru_au
the cheap, safe alternative, with a lasting taste that lasts for generations to enjoy and pay for centuries to come!
Disillusioned
The only reason they want to do this is so they can increase electricity costs to pay for their 'man-made' disaster. The company should be dismantled and the management should be facing criminal charges.
Steve Mcgrew
it is going to cost 10 trillion yen and take many decades just to complete the R&D and build suitable equipment and storage facilities before the clean up and dismantling of the damaged plants can even begin...TEPCO and your own Government is feeding you a large steaming pile of bull manure and hoping you will eat it all without question or complaint.
waltery
It's good to see full disclosure, hope it continues and the follow up plans. I hope some good will come from this natural disaster, terrible accident and effort to clean up.
Heda_Madness
Stop worrying about CO2 emissions.
Because that will help...

Back on topic please.

Whose going to pay for it?
YongYang
AND the rest.

Have they sold off all their land and demanded any of the bonuses back from those with blodd on their hands? No? Then don't use my tax money to bail of this greedy, inept company any more than the government already has. Japan really does have a suicide mission.
nandakandamanda
There may be more money to be made in the nuclear clean-up field (shileds, storage tanks, cranes, back-up systems, robotics, protective wear, filtering systems, etc.) than in renewables, although I would never suggest such a thing in public.
nandakandamanda
oops, "shields" it should be.

Wasn't there an article last week about how they had over-estimated the costs?
Disillusioned
Gees! Pessimistic much?
sighclops
So, elephant in the room - when are we going to see some arrests over this disaster?
Cho88
That's all we expect from you now.

This came as no surprise to me. The longer the corium remains undiscovered, the longer the irradiation will occur and the more it will cost to clean up. A year and a half later, they are STILL just maintaining the status quo rather than actively doing anything to clean the reactor site. It's almost like they're waiting for the Cesium to reach its half life.
breakbeatz
Scientists need to come together and find a better way of counter acting nuclear radiation or there will be no hope for us all. Einstein is turning in his grave...
moomoochoo
I just hope we don't stick to the one method of power generation. You know what they say " Don't put all your eggs in the one basket."
Just as everyone converts to solar power, a super-volcano erupts blanketing the world in darkness....shortly by an asteroid impact.
JoshuYaki
Part of he expense is executives salaries, raises, bonuses etc. But we all got into bed with nuclear power when we decided it was okay and we live in a society that uses as much electricity as we do. Its not just Tepco its all of us.

Send the bill to Mr. kan-kan. He is responsible the accident of fukushima. Several experts are unanimous in stating than the 50 minutes lost by the delay in the start of cooling the reactor was a determining factor to accident. Mr. kan,you deceived the Japanese less enlightened, but you're certain to go down in history as the worst Prime Minister this country ever had.
alladin
Tepco said the clean up cost will double, I don't think so, I think it will triple with the way that things are presently going right now.
