It's truly amazing that a child can be considered capable of illegality despite events being outside his or her control.

Why does Japan like to break up families? Sending the mother without the child is just cruel and unusual punishment.

Parents are criminals so jail then deport. The child is innocent. If he was born here and has integrated, give them a permanent resident visa. Don’t know specific details, but probably at that age can’t intergrate into Thai culture. But also if parents were moving to hide, he may be accustomed to dodgy lifestyle.

In most countries if you are born in that country you are a citizen of that country, even in the USA. Why is Japan so backward in this issue? It's a very sad situation.

Because having 'Japanese blood' is considered necessary socially, although not a legal requirement. The idea of a unique DNA is still an idea that is prevalent even amongst young students here!

AFAIK, few countries award citizenship on base of birthplace.

Most grant citizenship according to parent NOT place of birth.

Never understood the USA, etc System.

How many people travel to the USA just to give birth (anchor-child).

Even the Japanese government will recognize 'blood ties' in granting citizenship/passports when it suits them though......

So, you would have rather had the son deported with the mom? Wow, that's kind of cold, the boy was born and raised here and knows nothing of his parents country, the government SHOULD have let her stay!

There are very few countries that give citizenship upon birth in the country, you really should check. Seems that too many American's think the laws of the world are centralized on their country, they aren't.

Quite a few Japanese celebrities have done it, and would surprise me if more did it if they had the money!

Except in this case there are no "blood-ties" as both parents are Thai.

China offers tours, go to USA, stay in a Dorm with other women, give birth and return later. All arranged and only a tourist visa is needed.

Recently saw a report about US Kids that had to leave for Mexico and start new. Very interesting.

This is the best outcome. There should be no reward for intentionally breaking the law, but it can show compassion on someone who had no say in the matter.

This racism pure and simple!

Critical comments above so close to Christmas are heartbreaking. No room at the inn, I suppose.

In Europe this happens all the time since there is no efficient way to remove illegal immigrants/refugees if they decide not to go willingly.

Japan could conceivably become a huge anchor baby destination, owing to its location and living standards. Note that he was only given a year to stay here.

Thailand isn't such a bad place to go. Most other Asian countries are more repressive.

Doubt that would work. Japan has an official Language, which the USA hasn't.

As for allowing 'anchor babies' doubt that Japanese or most other countries would be happy to open that particular floodgate.

Bungle: sorry but you need to check facts. There are many counties that give citizenship to baby's that are born there with parents from other countries. Google it! You must be American!

The claim was that most countries grant citizenship by being born in the country. That was incorrect as Bungle pointed out. Countries that grant citizenship due to being born in that country are the exception. The large majority of countries do not grant citizenship simply due to being born in the country.

A study in 2010 found that only 30 of the world's 194 countries grant citizenship at birth to the children of undocumented foreign residents, although definitive information was not available from 19 countries.[5]

but I agree things need to be clearer in the law.

law is that it is illegal for parents to be here, and dodging authorities and not paying tax. such people would be forced to flee in the case of a car accident and not provide adequate health care to their child.

So you that think I'm wrong. Here are the facts. Canada Canada has a much more progressive laws and compassion when it comes to these kind of matters. Canada realises to grow an economy you need to have growth and immigration. On the other hand Japan has a racist immigration policy and a ageing shrinking population.
