He's gone a lot further than Branson and Bezos, who barely scraped into space for 3 minutes, beyond the von Karman line, 100km above the surface.

Of course such rich people want to do things that others cannot do. No surprises there. Good for him. Fast cars, boats, and big houses probably get a bit boring on earth when you can buy however many you like.

Haters gunna hate. Well done Maezawa, you now been in space dude! anyone that can do anything that monumental deserves our attention. Onya!

Japan thrives on these kid of showing off stories, love to talk big, and drive fancy cars while living a tiny small apt. Everywhere I go someone flashes a brand in face as if I give a damn.

Well, is his money and we all have our own dreams. At least he gotten to go to space in his lifetime. What's the point of having money if you can't be a little selfish and enjoy yourself a little. Able to travel to space is something a lot of people wanted deep inside their heart. Those who criticize him are just petty. If i had that much money, i would have done way more crazy things before it's too late. We only live once and there is nothing wrong with spending our own money. As long you don't endanger anyone, you are free to do whatever you want. Plus it takes guts and determination to able to even willing to go there. He did even took the training and the necessary preparation. All i can say is, have fun and have a safe journey.

you think the Russian or anybody is doing all this for free? For fun? For charity?

Of course not.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Paying the Russians a huge amount for a glorified joy-ride is, 'an accomplishment'?

Don't be jealous now

Congrats to the guy, though, what an accomplishment!

space trip = peanut butter cups

@Rob

Sure it can, because the space federation exists as the state, and the ruling class is the bureaucrat of the space federation.

If I were him I would want to eat nato when I am back to Japan

Good thing he didn't bring some natto with him to the ISS.

Congrats to the guy, though, what an accomplishment!

@Rob

Isn't Star Trek an american show?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Yes, what we need is a bit of communism, surely that will spur on progress toward FTL propulsion. What could go wrong.

Star Trek gets it so you should be able to as well.

Hell, it's his money. Let him do what he wants.

Also, first good news for the day.

Ei! Ei! Ei! Ohhhhhhhh!

Very nice and a bit step for Japan.

Hopefully JAXA can develop.

“Maezawa is a sad person on the inside regardless of all the smiling photo-ops. He had to bribe Russia to go into outer space because the "cool" billionaires did not want him wasting their time.

I do not know which is sadder: billionaires acting like the popular kids in high school or another billionaire wanting to be apart of the group so badly.”

I think he might be happier than many are here. Not sure if happier than you are Numan. Hello? Maybe he is happy despite a bit suffering from motion sickness haha.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

But anyway, he seems to be still a simple and honest guy. Normally you nowadays would say officially something woke, something they all demand and expect from you to say, how much you like the view of the planet Earth best, how vulnerable it looks and some other woke phrases on danger of climate change, environmental issues, billions of poor people, etc you name it…but he said instead what? The most memorable thing was seeing the ISS and the docking process. Chapeau!

Gosh so much animosity in here. The guy has money, he goes to space, he enjoys. What's wrong with that?

And to those who talk about Global Warming: stay home this holiday season and eat stale bread and broth! If you leave your house or do anything you're contributing to global warming! Or just breathing for that matter.

Enjoy! Have a safe trip back.

At the same time as the Government is trying to justify taxpayer funded gifts of 十万円 to spur domestic consumption, these two blow eighty million bucks (equivalent to eighty thousand of those handouts) on something that’s of next to no benefit to Japan; indeed a net loss. You can’t make this stuff up.

@Bungle

According to Wiki, this guy was recently the controlling stockholder in Softbank with a 50.1% stake. I find this incredible - please tell me my comprehension is awry

Poor reading my friend. He sold his 50.1% shares of his company to Softbank. That is why he is a billionaire.

Wikipedia:

Maezawa resigned from ZoZo in September 2019 after selling a stake of 50.1% in the company to SoftBank for US$3.7 billion (400 billion Yen). He also sold 30% of his personal stake in ZoZo to Yahoo Japan.

He cashed out after the board pushed him out!

SF books where humans and/or aliens alike are running around the galaxy in FTL ships looking for private profit are patently absurd. Capitalism has takes us into space about as far as it's ever going to do.

Even within the shackles of capitalist economy, this guy being taxed way more so that he couldn't afford such joy rides and suggests a much healthier society. In his place a specialist who can carry out useful, practical or even groundbreaking work the state sent would be evidence of a much healthier society and a society moving forward.

Go brag elsewhere please everyone so jumping on to the rich man bandwagon of trying to become famous because they got to space.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Global warming anyone…. One could laugh If it wouldn’t be so tragic. It’s like Musk in space when he said how fragile the earth looked, yep, best way to safe it is to zip into space - we are doomed
