On US Navy and JMSDF ships during hours of darkness red lighting is used to preserve night vision. Some navies use blue light.

Things you notice, the times I have been aboard JMSDF warships I saw food served on sectioned metal trays and not in individual bowls. The latter is more civilized perhaps but from experience, a metal tray might look like something from a prison, but it is easier to hold on to when the ship is pitching and rolling than individual bowls would be. I don't even see the green rubber mesh on the table or a lip around the edge to keep things from sliding off. Meal time in a big Pacific swell would be, um, interesting /:

my high school had both. I would always use the metal trays. Always. I loved them. I remember there I always allotted a section for minced boiled eggs and another for raw red onions, and then whatever they were serving that day.

In reality Japanese having difficulties in recruting people to join Military

.

Sexual Assault case just doesn't help that recruitment problem.

So, my question is what future war is the article referring to?

Why is Japan preparing ‘assault’ capabilities?

Wars are the result of political failings which result in conflict ie politicians being inept

We all know the ineptness of politicians in Japan so is war being planned for or is it just a disaster looming into view by chance?

So, my question is what future war is the article referring to?

Why is Japan preparing ‘assault’ capabilities?

Japan's got a lot of contested islands. Would be negligence not to be prepared to retake them if necessary.

If an army could avoid having female soldiers, it would...

Especially when population is dropping not because of war but just because lack of family values.

-12 ( +9 / -21 )

So, my question is what future war is the article referring to?

Why is Japan preparing ‘assault’ capabilities?

Exactly. JT making the case for war as usual, which thereby necessitates that Japan buy more weapons etc.

-9 ( +12 / -21 )

Some fantasy Chinese invasion of Okinawa. Hey, it sells military contracts.

So, my question is what future war is the article referring to?

If you're female stay away from the Japanese self- defence forces.

They are famous for abusing female soldiers.

-16 ( +11 / -27 )

You have to assault and hold.

WAR is coming in front of your eyes...

Kudos to the women for making their place in such a demanding job.

To those commenting on why having a prepared and motivated military is necessary, it may be educational to remember that it takes both sides of a potential conflict to take part in honest political discourse. Now go take a good, hard look at how honest the 2 currently potential adversaries have been historically in their "political discourse".

Japan can take a lesson from Israel where all of legal age is a member of their active & reserve Self Defense Forces. JSDFs are among the best trained military.

I'm biased but the toughest and bravest soldiers are always in the marine corps and these women are probably tougher than nails. You go girls! That aside, marine units are crucial in amphibious and rapid response situations as conventional ground forces may be slower to take action. On the food situation on ships discussed in this comment, I prefer having the metal tray with everything neatly placed and sectioned. It makes cleaning easier too.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Don't think that the JSDF is safe for girls.

The last sexual abuse scandal left the impoverished girl with an unreasonably low compensation and no accountability for the perpetrators.

WAR is coming in front of your eyes...

And it's your country China bringing it to every country in the region.

The recruitment campaigns for women over the past decade have been abysmal in the least.

Anime characters have been featured strongly with some posters looking like they've come from Shojo Manga (young girls manga), Moe (cutie) anime and even borderline Hentai ( sexy anime).

Even "Pop Tarento" have been used in marketing with the likes of AKB48 member Haruka Shimazaki featuring in tv commercials.

A description of the cm - "There's work that you can only do here," she says with a smile. A pink heart-shaped cherry petal spins as she points to the English phrase "You AND PEACE."

One can only wonder what level of male brilliance devised all these campaigns and how successful they were???

Obviously a big failure.

Fast forward now and the recent harassment case that attracted international attention, seems to have forced a new hand to be played - the G.I. Jane approach looks to have replaced the above.

Good Luck to them.

So, my question is what future war is the article referring to?

Why is Japan preparing ‘assault’ capabilities?

The fear is of China landing forces on the many Japanese islands in the First Island Chain and specifically the Senkaku Islands which China claims as their own. Japan wants an amphibious force capable or retaking any small islands China puts forces on.

In the event China decides to attack Taiwan, China will need to take the Japanese islands to the north of Taiwan including Yonaguni, Taketome, and Ishigaki at the very least to gain control of the oceans around Taiwan and for the PLAN to be able to operate freely to the east of the First Island Chain. Japan will need the ability to move forces rapidly to her islands in order to defend them and possibly take them back.

Go ladies !!!...

The usual whiners comments...

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Well if they meet the required standard they are worth having them. But the fact remains the integration of women to combat requires additional logistical, regulatory and disciplinary costs. Therefore, due to their small number at times the integration do not make it a worthwhile move. For those women who cut it I say bravo!!

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Japanese women (many anyway) are a lot tougher than you think.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The women passed the course to become marines just like the men.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

I certainly hope so. Won't be fair otherwise.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

The female Marines deserve equal respect as the men.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

FTFY

Although the pay of Japanese female workers is still far behind Tokyo's ally, the United States…

bigdrum sounds… thats all we hear.

Better be leaders by example and recruit the Best and brightest! NEED every single Pinstripes daugters cousins, step kids nieces first in line for elite ground forces. Thats how you stop wars.

Although the number of Japanese female soldiers has doubled during the past decade, it is still far behind Tokyo's ally, the United States.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

The female Marines deserve equal respect as the men.

Goes without saying. It's not the Showa period after all.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

As we have seen with recent sexual assault cases, female troops do not always have the respect they have earned. Their pay scales are lower.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

"the toughest and bravest soldiers are always in the marine corps"

You have never met any Marines. Marines are not soldiers, they are Marines. Soldiers are in armies.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

You have never met any Marines.

I know two marines. One in my family. One from school. They do more soldiery things than navy things. Either way they get all the respect they deserve in equal measures

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Marines are not soldiers and get upset if they are called that. They are a fighting unit like many others but they are marine based.

"Each branch of the military has its own mission, training, history, uniform, and esprit de corps."

Japanese women (many anyway) are a lot tougher than you think.

In 1900, a very large number of Japanese women worked down a coal mine at the coal face. They weren't swanning about in kimonos from tea ceremonies to calligraphy lessons.

https://www.amazon.co.jp/Coal-Mining-Women-Japan-Burdens-Transformations/dp/1138094862

With Japan's ageing population, the logical solution is to create a Dad's Army. They don't like it up 'em Mr Mannering!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The answer is simple. Japan needs its own form of the G.I Bill. Pay for their education.

Give their veterans the right to home loans. Set specific areas where they could possibly set up businesses with Veteran interest-free business loans.

You'd be surprised at how many Japanese families cannot afford to send their children to universities.

I think the resistance / friction will come from the status quo universities and vocational institutions that depend on getting new students initially. It won't be until the JMSDF subsidizes their undergraduate education that all other higher learning institutions will get on board.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

'Training for war' heavily emphasized in this headline. Yeah of course training for war is what soldiers, sailors and airman do but is the purpose of this 'article' supposed to send a message that war with China is a given?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

What else can you do if you don’t calm down? If you want to fight again, you haven’t fought much before. we lost everything we could. Now you want to fight again and you’ve already lost your land because of the war, do you want more?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Train for war? That's rich. Better to train for emergency relief and save lives pronto instead of waffling around like the government's piss poor response. You'd think after all the all too common natural disasters an advanced country like Japan could do better yes?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Rubbish. An amphibious assault on Taiwan is difficult enough. Now if the US and Japan start launching missiles from one or more of those islands, there certainly would be a response.

Pure speculation but I believe one of China's first announcements after a military conflict with Taiwanese forces would be directed at Japan telling them that Japan would be perfectly safe as long as it does not allow US forces to use bases in Japan as a platform for military activities against Chinese forces.

WHAT WAR?

The world has it's hands full , we don't need a new front , we have seen enough corpses and blood in the past 24 month and still coming. Images of death are all over the web, and if anyone is hungry for more just go to Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Yamen hospitals and see for yourself.

The world has gone mad and angry after COVID make you wonder if leaders have LOST THEIR MINDS or just gone crazy.

I guess it will be good, then, that the US will be striking China from Okinawa before Japan makes up its mind to chicken out.

I hope i don’t meet these women, they look dangerous.
