Except for the old couple enjoying the moment, pretty much everyone glued to their smartphones.

I was out and about yesterday in Tokyo (where I live) with my partner. Glad to see many beautiful people enjoying life, eating drinking and being merry under cherry blossom trees.

Except for the old couple enjoying the moment, pretty much everyone glued to their smartphones.

Those people always on their smartphones are immature and regressive. Don't let life pass you by.

I have always noticed that there is a lot of rain when the cherry blossoms are out. Too bad the weather is never nice for it.

soon they’ll be at full tilt, the long cameras out

Lol, three times in the last 10 years, out of a total of 80 years is not significant? Ok.

Oh, my bad. It says since 1953. So, "since records began" is only a few decades. Not no significant.

If anyone is going to see lit-up sakura at night, beware that it can be pretty cold. My distant memory of evening hanami was getting there, everyone feeling the cold, bailing after twenty minutes or so, and ending up in a nearby izakaya.

This year the blossoms are being drenched by the rains

Everyone is pissed with the weather lately. Next sunny day will be around next wednesday, by that time the remaining sakura are already old white...now just praying not too many people will be sweeping the beautiful sakura petals off the streets like they also do with autumn leaves. Whats the point of "cleaning up" a beautifully nature covered street that will be like that only for a couple of days a year??? One of my pet peeves in Japan.

I love to see the petals flying in the wind and then collecting on the ground like a floral snowfall.

However, yes even that transient beauty gets sharp shrift by the resident obachans.

Advantages?

When the jungle crows destroy a bag or two at the Gomi station, I am always amazed that the street is spotless after 20 minutes.

Sometimes the propensity to clean up has a plus side to it

too bad the weather is being quite nasty lately...so I predict a quite short hanami this year sadly...I really hope to be wrong...

Published this article a few days to early I see?

Mostly about 60% bloomed today. Definitely reaching peak around Sunday or Monday.

The Chidorigafuchi Moat is northwest of the Tokyo Imperial Palace. It is famous for its walking path, Chidorigafuchi Ryokudo, which is known for its picturesque views of cherry blossoms. There are approximately 260 cherry trees, which are lit at night and reflected in the water.

I went boating with Priscilla there once, and I swear I got seasick. It's a nice place and I thoroughly recommend it.

Operative words: "since records began" yet that date is mysteriously omitted. Could it be only since post WWII?

I saw the cherry blossoms last year. Are they somehow different this year?
