violating domestic law

When in Rome... Or their laws do not apply to Japanese citizens? Why not stage a rescue operation, and smuggle him out in a cardboard box, and fly him back to Japan in a private jet?

informed by the Chinese authority that a Japanese man in his 50s was taken into custody in Beijing earlier in March over allegedly violating domestic law.

In any normal civilized country the exact charge and law would have been provided. And access to the detainees consulate would have been made. But this is China. What a joke of a country.

Pathetic, authoritarian China at it again.

The man is likely innocent - he should be given full consular access and the right to a lawyer immediately.

or else what? I’d love to find out. Let the fight begin. Round 1 go!

When in Rome...

When it comes to China, tho. That's a totally different land.

I have never heard of that law. "Violating domestic law" is what? Anything the authorities want it to be? Whatever they make up to detain him? If they are unable to state in clear terms the law he broke, then the man needs to be released immediately. It is not national security so they have nothing to hide, yet hide they do. Pathetic system of fake justice.

In America the central government has no adjudication of a criminal case, whether it local or state ,why should Japan think any different, how many foreign national are detain in Japan,it just make Japanese look weak

Peter14, domestic law, mean generally statutory law

if China is not playing the outwardly belligerent 'our country our terms' game, and has any semblance of an understanding of the concept of due process, this shouldn't even be an issue.

But day in,and day out, we are witnessing a collective mindset that doesn't either understand ( or doesn't seem to care ) the basic rules and hard-fought standards of the international community. certain standards are actually universal if you want them to be. Another test for the CCP.

Japan also requested that Chinese authorities allow the man access to Japanese consulate officials.

Zehi!

Yrral

I’m pretty sure Peter14 knows what ‘domestic law’ means, but the article doesn’t specify what law was broken. Vague with a capital V.

Their system isn’t very transparent is it?

Oh yeah, this Japanese man in his 50's must have been illegally staying in China RIGHT?

Authoritarians only understand the language of Strength, how about detaining a couple of Chinese diplomats!? that will get their attention.!!!!

Don't break the law, and you won't get arrested.

As if this is at all surprising. China's new order has been around for decades, it has never changed, it has only spread wider, deeper into the western order.

Worst still, China will do deals with the company involved to hang the employee out to dry, money is king to corporations, just ask Stern Hu ex-Rio Tinto exec.

Wall street, Marunouchi, London, all still have enormous investments in China, so don't think our government is truly advocating for our interest.

I have had to work in China too, grilled for hours about why I slept in the factory instead of at home, registration to buy utensils for kitchen...all normal according to my company.

That's like demanding North Korea to behave sensibly.

Ain't gonna happen!
