Sounds like people enjoyed themselves, and if Halloween is in fact a billion dollar industry in Japan then it provides a boost to the economy. From what I've read elsewhere, some oyajis think it's bad, which I interpret to be a positive; grumpy old men are always looking for something new to grumble about. Everybody wins!

I think this is a great way for people to let off some steam and maybe, just maybe get a break from the grind that working in Japan is. I've also heard some people grumbling, but not only Oyajis, but also some foreigners that the Japanese have once again corrupted a Western event. But who cares! If more adults want to wear costumes and have fun, who are we to say they are wrong. So there is not much trick or treating, its probably healthier that way!

I agree ! However, I don't agree with Valentine's Day... It's supposed to be a "lovers" days, not a profit making day for the chocolate makers...

I agree with all of the above.

How far we've come from just ten years ago with police by the hundreds patrolling the Yamanote Line worrying about foreigners in costumes bothering everyone.

While I'm all for people enjoying themselves, I think it a bit sad that Japan so quickly adopted Halloween. And besides, they could never do trick or treat like in America.

Your second comment contradicts your first.
Not giving huge amounts of sugar-laden candy to children is a good thing.

Very true! I remember those days, and the racists screaming that "this is not a white country" even though they went and celebrated christmas. Good on Japan for accepting Halloween. After all, this is the land of cosplay..

I sugar-loaded over a hundred kids who came to the door trick or treating. Nope, no pangs of guilt for doing so.

I did the same when I was back home, and would now too - it's all fun.
But the fact is, it's also really bad for the kids health, and that's part of western Halloween Japan is better off not importing.

Halloween on a Monday night feels weird - since still have to go to work or school the next day and the rest of the week, so can't go too crazy
Trick-or-treating is more for the experience of whatever happens during trick-or-treating hanging out with lots of friends outside and avoiding getting egged, etc. - many kids don't even eat much of the candies; they just trade 'em, put 'em away later, or give 'em away to people
