Great to see numbers dropping, although I know it will disappoint many posters on this site. Japan has done a great job of containing the virus and getting it under control.

Waiting for the usual faces here whingeing if the number is high, if the number is low. If its high then we 'must enter lockdown' , if its low 'we must test more' to get the number up!!! It really is quite amusing. I thought we had all accepted that the numbers were fiction months ago - does it not get tiring recycling the same comments? In the words of the UK Government - Hands, Face. Space. Spend more tine worrying about yourselves and your family that what the government do. You should know better by now.

So the virus is also cost-conscious...It took a timeout and went on travel for half the price and when have returned back it will surely redeem all coupons too. lol

The consequence of "Silver Week" holiday is supposed to appear around this week. It can be a helpful indicator for the future outlook and course of action. Let's hope for the best, and behave sensibly.

The number of new cases has dropped inline with the number of tests. Yesterday was 120 new cases with nearly 6,000 tests. Today it’s 60 with 3,000 tests. It’s logical to conclude that if they did 300,000 tests there would be 6,000 new cases.

The fatality rate for covid patients is going down. Though it depends on how it is interpreted, I attribute the overall improvements in treatment strategy (other than vaccination) alongside case experiences.

While I appreciate the disclaimer, to clarify the article you reference is referring to the CFR for the Tokyo Metropolitan area, comparing the fatality rate for the period following the SOE to the period from the first case to the end of the SOE. Essentially, the CFR has dropped to one twelfth of that during the May, the deadliest month, for the Metro area.

I can see that in National terms, the CFR for September was 1.82% (15091 cases, 275 deaths), while the CFR for August was 0.89% (32000 cases, 285 deaths). The overall CFR is 1.87% (85298 cases, 1598 deaths).

As they say, statistics can tell any story you want them to. From my perspective, it seems that Japan has a tentative handle on things, but it is far from over.

Mild-moderate and Serious symptoms data. They are already included in the total number of people hospitalized.

Seriously if this virus was so contagious I would had already been infected begging for life support......

I do not know if this is done in other countries, but we do it in Sweden.

We measure the content of covid in the wastewater from the treatment plants and it gives a good result at least which way the infection is on its way.

The measurement result is more reliable for a city than testing.

@reckless - make sure you take the form that the J government provides since the standard “ok to fly” certificate in the US does not have your passport # as one of the required items. Also, my friends in LA confirmed that there are now around 10 or so clinics that offer guaranteed 72 hour or less PCR test turnaround. A friend got it back within 12 hours.

Hope it world out @Reckless - I know a few people who have travelled under all the conditions now in place - Nobody has had a problem. Yes, it takes a little time to get organised and a little additional expenditure, but it is all very doable.
