8 million yen to 13 people for stealing the future they deserved. What a farce.
Ramzel
Spot on antifun.
they should calculate the lost wages of having been able to practice and pay that out to them in damages.

It’s a disgrace.
It makes you wonder what else is going on in medical schools that are underhanded.
It’s medical school, for heaven’s sake, not cooking school.

Women mature earlier than men and therefore they do better at college entrance exams. Some kind of adjustment can be justified at medical schools or we will be seeing more dermatologists and ophthalmologist and fewer surgeons and ER doctors.

‘That has to be one of the most counter productive arguments I’ve ever seen, they are better and should be hobbled to allow less evolved males to get through? Oh my god.

I am NOT surprised at all, rigged Exams, and rigged systems are very common and the odds are all against women minorities and the powerless.
Sadly Japan still has a long ways to go when it come to Equal Rights and I doubt if it will ever change that much due to the fact that it is deeply rooted.

Written like a true sexist self-righteous pantomath.
Some women possibly mature faster but certainly not all.
Lets remember that women aren't allowed to mature in Japan.
Its true women and men are not equal but however equal opportunity in the employment and educational system is needed.

Only 13 women?
I doubt even that number is accurate.
I’m sure they’ve screwed over at least 100X that.
Mr Kipling
The reason for penalizing females is that more of them will quit to become full time mothers leaving the hospitals attached to the schools short of doctors.
There were a lot more universities than mentioned having this same ridiculous discrimination.
The plaintiffs were awarded a little over a months salary of what they could have earned had they not been cheated. Justice?

Perhaps that's because girls here are largely raised to be "sensible", while boys tend to be pampered and get all the attention. I'm generalizing, of course, but as a parent, and having worked in the school system, I've observed this trend again and again.
"Boys, be ambitious! Girls, B minus!"
Disillusioned
The university argued at the time that women had better communication skills, and were therefore at an advantage in the interview part of their applications.
Only in Japan would you be penalised for being smarter than Naoki Average. "The nail that stands up must be hammered down!"
After two decades of living in Japan and teaching English in high schools and colleges I can definitely attest to the fact that women far excel over the men academically. Women also outperform the men in sports, both domestically and internationally. The gender descrimination in Japan comes from the men being afraid of the success of women. Japanese women (in general) are strong, mature and educated, which the men are not.

« Juntendo University said in 2018 that it had raised the bar for women in the exams in order to "narrow the gap with male students" »
« Tokyo Medical University, admitted it had systematically lowered the scores of female applicants to keep women in the student body at around 30 percent »
The Japanese idea of narrowing the gap between male and female students is interesting. Keep less prepared men, in higher percentage.

A fine/compensation payment for systemic fraud on potentially half the population. Shouldn't the university board at least face criminal fraud charges?
kurisupisu
This is a ‘university’ arguing this?
Preposterous!
So, not one, but several hospitals were doing the same moronic discriminatory practice.
This is why I get out of Japan if I have anything major going on.
There have been more than a few times in hospitals here that even before meeting a doctor that I have been told to get an x-ray.
It’s sort of strange that this does not happen with doctors I have seen outside Japan.
When doctors refuse to communicate with patients that doesn’t make for a proficient doctor or a satisfactory level of treatment for the patient!

In patriarchies it has ever been thus. As old as the myth of Atalanta and Hippomenes. Women must be distracted so that men can "win." The man's prize for this cheat is to marry the woman, keeping her firmly under his rule.

How do institutions supposedly educating in science come to this type of unscientific conclusions? Mind boggling.
I wonder. Has anyone been held to account? Surely, affecting numerous people's lives based on nothing but prejudice should be met with consequences. 8 million yen is nothing for such an institution and those responsible probably learnt their lesson that they just need to be more creative with their prejudice.
In other (albeit not quite related) news, Ghosn has an Interpol warrant issued. Hurt money, you're wanted internationally. Hurt people, suffer no consequences.

Why they have to discriminate against future Japanese women doctors. They are an asset. Their pay will be lower and they will never reach the highest ranks.
Harry_Gatto
Told by whom?
ushosh123
How does one possibly feel this substantiate what they did? So if a foreigner applies they will bell their marks up since their communication skills were likely inferior to native speakers? And if they don't know Japanese you might as well accept them straight in.

Japan has a growing need of trained medical personnel, universities get found cheating people out of careers in the field…
no one gets fired, arrested, fined, or anything just a fake bow and sorry with an insultingly small compensation split among 13 people for damages against their entire life track it affected.
but they are still going after ghosen lol

Even if the advantages given to male students is justified by the difficulties product of unequal distribution of Medical services in Japan (and that is a quite big "if"), the fact that the universities and medical schools do this in secret without openly informing the candidates is what makes this unequivocally wrong.
ian
Agree.
Like fixed number of slots for each specialization
Johansawada
i don't want to hear the apology crap!
so what will be done to ensure this does not happen again? is their a regulating body that can monitor and enforce to ensure females will be treated equally?
Kumagaijin
I suspect the decision was made by a handful of oyaji in some smokey back office. Where are the deep bows and resignations?
ian
They should have declared themselves men to outsmart the system problem is they are medical schools probably know biology
shogun36
Yup, a lot of dorks and introverts that don't know how to socialize out there.
You can blame that to the center test mentality in JHS and HS.
And of course the mama's boys.
kurisupisu
@ HG
By the attending doctor no less…
virusrex
Unfortunately it is equally likely women were also involved, during the peak of the scandal female officials and teachers made arguments to justify the decision as correct.

Not a whole lot of money for 13 women. Female doctors have better bedside manner anyway. I’m not being sexist and that’s why females make better general practitioners. Surgeons are usually male and listen to heavy metal while operating.
purple_depressed_bacon
Are Japanese men so intimidated by their female peers that they resorted to such low means of getting ahead in the game? Aside from the illegality of it all, it also shows just how insecure and pathetic these men are - that they have no faith in their own abilities and skills to the point where they rigged the exam system. As a potential patient, this is rather worrying - who wants to go see a doctor that cheated their way into the system?
ian
Lesson, if you have no idea whom to choose but have options get the lady doctor, she's not necessarily better but definitely have to be good to be where she's at, especially if in nontraditional specialization if there's such a thing
ian
A bit different.
The male doctors didn't cheat their way into the system, the system was rigged for them.
But if they go to a particular school knowing the system is rigged then yeah cheating
