Tokyo ranked 3rd most attractive city in Global Power Index

London, New York, Tokyo, Paris and Singapore once again emerged in that order as the world’s most comprehensively attractive cities in the Global Power City Index (GPCI) 2021 report released on Wednesday. This report is published by The Mori Memorial Foundation’s Institute for Urban Strategies, a research body established by Mori Building, a leading urban developer in Tokyo. The GPCI-2021 did not show any significant changes in the top cities' rank, but the citywide lockdowns, travel restrictions, behavioral restrictions, and changes in work styles associated with the COVID-19 epidemic since early 2020 affected various indicators. This resulted in a marked impact on the dynamics of target cities.

In the GPCI-2021, there are 19 indicators that are assumed to have been affected by COVID-19. Each impact can be divided into four categories: Travel Restrictions, Business Activity, Working Style, and Urban Environment. In terms of Travel Restrictions, many cities experienced a decline in international air travel and passenger traffic, and cities with strong international networks were seriously affected in Accessibility and Cultural Interaction. In addition, economic stagnation had a negative impact on Business activities in many cities. On the other hand, COVID-19 has brought about some positive changes: improvements in working style and in the urban environment. In many of the target cities, the number of working hours decreased and workstyle flexibility appeared to improve.

All these cities are insanely expensive to rent a place to live that would barely qualify as living in dignity and are overpopulated. But somehow they are deemed "attractive".

14 ( +19 / -5 )

When you get people who decide these things getting ridiculous salary’s and even more ridiculous outrageous hither to unreported perks like 12milion yen for postage you are going to get the most bizarre outcomes that are at complete odds with reality.

10 ( +15 / -5 )

Let's go!

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

They surely forgot the indicators for crime and terror threats, because the outcome of that ranking would then be much more in favor for Tokyo.

If you are an expat global financial exec living in a Roppongi Hills condo, all of these cities are a blast to live in.

A fairly useless index and maybe just a , measure of the ill earned power accrued to global finance.

Working Style

Are they having a joke?

14 ( +17 / -3 )

Japan isn't even letting foreigners easily enter the country, how can that be seen as attractive for business? Wouldn't surprise me if this ranking was paid for.

Ah, that explains why Tokyo ranked so high.

19 ( +21 / -2 )

Tokyo gets more attractive the longer people are kept away from it.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

a japanese city awarded by a japanese study ... ok ... next

16 ( +20 / -4 )

Tokyo is attractive for the rich, but terrible for the poor.

According to other surveys the result looks like this:

San Francisco

Amsterdam

Manchester (GB)

Copenhagen

New York City

Montreal

> Prague, and so on.

Guess it all depends who is signs for those surveys.

Oh, and Tokyo ranks 10!

Do you seriously consider San Francisco and Manchester to be anywhere near the top? Horrible public transport and, even if you are a fan of driving it's horrendous to do that, and far less in terms of cultural diversity. Saying Prague is having a laugh.

Singapore and (before the political situation messed it up) Hong Kong are major diverse well connected global cities with huge sprawl beyond their political borders and hence should rank above Australian and Canadian cities.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Can never understand why Singapore's always up there, with its' terrible record on human rights, especially in regards their most vicious judicial corporal punishments in the world..... their country should always be boycotted to force a change, when they may then be considered suitable to join the civilised world.

Good lord. It's a dump. In many ways.

Third in the world??? Haha.

There are much nicer cities here with much nicer people, with much nicer weather and much nicer atmosphere.

I wouldn't argue but which cities do you have in your mind, which have all those conditions = much nicer people+weather+atmosphere, hopefully with public peace and order better than Tokyo and no discrimination toward Asian.

You must name a few

I am asking as I am so interested in your assertion.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

I love Tokyo. I love the people who live in Tokyo. I hear some really rude and unfounded comments. A dump ? Unfriendly Tokyo people ? bad weather ? bad atmosphere ? This is not true and false on all points. This bloke has never spent a day or night in Tokyo. Tokyo. 35c in summer. Perfect . 3hours from fresh powdered uncrowded ski Joes. Perfect. Having a great night catching a ball game at Tokyo dome with a top atmosphere and a great crowd and the beer girls. Perfect. Great food, Perfect. Colour code trains make it so easy to get around on the best urban transport system in the word and cheap. Perfect. Super clean. Perfect. No worry about being a victim of crime. Perfect. The cost = Ballgame Y2000, ( standing room ) a feed at sushi ro, Y 1000, Room at Tokyo dome Hotel Y 13,000, Perfect.

Tokyo is one of the ugliest cities in the world

China's big cities are more beautiful

-7 ( +11 / -18 )

There appear to be a lot of Tokyo haters here.

name a city that is geared towards to poor. All major cities are more livable for the rich.

for transport and range of cuisine Tokyo is bar none the best.

Which ones? Hope Public Toilet ( I mean not the real public one such as the ones in the park etc) conditions are different by now

However, as you know, nobody wants to live in any city in China.

3 ( +9 / -6 )

They have a bunch of pompous bourgeois sitting around trading off on what city is ranked for what category like a bunch of 10 year-olds trading baseball cards.

However, as you know, nobody wants to live in any city in China.

No one except a few billion people from all over the world. I'd bet more than want to live in Japan. Shanghai is a pretty bad place, IMO but Guangzhou, Chengdu, Kunming for example are really nice places. I'm sure some of the smaller cities, with "only" a population of 5 or 6 million are really nice though never been there myself.

I think a lot of Japanese people still like to delude themselves that Japan is so much more a better place to live than China. Ditto for Americans and Europeans.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Japan isn't the worst place to live, nor is it the best.

Japan is generally a nice place. China is also nice. Japanese, Europeans and Americans are deluding themselves if they think 'their' (working people have no country) countries or cities are much nicer than China or Chinese cities in any respect. Unless unfettered access to Facebook and Google is really important to them.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

China would be a nice place if it weren't for the CCP. They ruin the country though. Disappearing people, running interment camps on the Uighurs, threatening the independent nation of Taiwan... the list goes on.

The people of China should rise up against the CCP and overthrow them.

Yikes. You really think so?!

Now living in Tokyo after stints in Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya. I would never have moved here but for family but now that we have, it’s great!

Those other cities were great but Tokyo offers shopping, museums, transportation (domestic and international) and food far, far beyond the others. It’s not a city you want to be poor in but try being poor in London, Paris or NYC. Tokyo is terrific!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Have never understood the purpose of these rankings. Something like this is so subjective.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

China would be a nice place if it weren't for the CCP.

Japanese, Europeans and Americans are deluding themselves if they think people aren't sitting around Harbin, Shenzhen, Xian saying something to end of, "USA, Japan, Europe would be really nice if not for the pig capitalist rulers who have delivered nothing but worsening mass poverty and escalating war for the last 30~40 years."

I think they would be justified in saying that......

Yes, if you like rust, orange cones and window displays full of plastic foods.

I'm inclined to agree. Although the CCP is much worse, due to their disinterest in preserving human rights. Capitalist governments have been bad, the CCP has been much, much worse.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Ranking is only relevant for certain defined categories, which might not apply to all. Having traveled and lived/worked in many of these cities, I would vote for Tokyo … which might not be glamorous for some but overall is good and safe.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Tokyo has a lot of things going for it, it is easily livable without a car, real estate/rent is cheap by G7 capital city standards, air quality is decent thanks to no diesels, cheap eating out with no tips, mostly safe, mostly free of gomi/sewerage smells, etc. So you can do a lot worse.

The list includes San Francisco, a strong contender for most unaffordable city in the world, so that can't have been a priority. Mori is a Tokyo developer, so exorbitant real estate is probably a plus for them.

i agree. Disappearing super-rich capitalists for not paying tax is far worse than mass homelessness, lack of social services due to all the money going to foreign wars, flagrant but legalized corruption and etc.

Yes, most definitely.

The title astounded me.

"Tokyo ranked 3rd most attractive city in Global Power Index"???

Third most attractive? I can think of 300 that rank higher. 'Global Power Index'??? So, the third most powerful city on the planet is Tokyo? Possibly the third-most power-sucking city on the planet. But, the Japanese just can't turn out the lights.

Watch the next month's JT photos of the season. Been there, done that.

Love those garden LED night shots.

Singapore is ahead of the times as far as modern and attractive and very clean with low crime , equality and low prejudice.

Everyone speaks English or Singlish.

Say hello to the merlion.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Should they include natural disaster likelihood in the rankings?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Attractive to whom? Just to think of the stench of that city makes me want to throw up. It is packed with angry, arrogant locals and foreigners who won't integrate. It is expensive and has no culture or dialect of its own. You wouldn't pay me enough to even considering moving there.

Tokyo summer is no good but isn't Singapore also hot and humid? does it have 4 seasons , I am not sure as I always visited, I guess, the same timing in a year.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I love Tokyo. I always have fun there. The gateway to Japan. It's a wonderful city to visit, but I do worry about a monster earthquake happening there in the near future.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

These rankings mean absolutely nothing in today's world. No one is travelling or relocating to Tokyo or anywhere else in the world. Its just that they are so desperate for any kind of business or attention that they publish these rankings. I assume they thought the pandemic would be over by now and this Global Power Index firm had already been given the money. Now, with the Omicron (sounds like a Transformer) variant, things will probably return to "the new normal" again. Masks, jabs, and working from home.

WRONG,  The Mori Memorial Foundation’s Institute for Urban Strategies is located in Tokyo and they would NOT dare not to put Tokyo on top if they can get away with it, as simple as that.

New York, London and Tokyo are overcrowded, Noisy, and dirty, and sorry but Tokyo is the worst of the three, now if you tell me KYOTO is voted No. 3 I would have agreed.
