But the circus must go on. Don't worry folks, all will be fine.

Until after the Olympics.

I remember reading a month or so ago a projection that there would be over 1000/day by May.

Almost right on schedule.

No clinics, pop up clinics, drive through testing or Covid 19 testing available of any kind in my city in Osaka today.

The excel sheet guys are rebelling against Koike.

Here is a rant: Had to come to kyoto today from Tokyo. Didn't want to, but no choice, due to license renewal. Japan being Japan, can only renew in city you are registered in. Tomorrow will kind up with hundreds of others at the licence testing centre. Not looking forward to it at all.

Why can't licences be renewed online (I'd even do if via fax), especially in this pandemic?

This is another trains on why numbers keep on increasing: Making people crisscross the country to do things that in any other "advanced" country can be done online. Then they say, stay home! How does that work????

Editor: Story will be updated later with nationwide numbers.

Editor - will these numbers include the number of tests? Because that's a bit of data which has been conspicuous by its absence in recent weeks.

And if not, why not?

Moderator: The number of tests has been included in the story every day, only later than before, between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Dear Moderator, can you please let us know... Why is the number of tests released after the number of positives??

If today's results are in fact from tests conducted 2 or 3 days ago, then the number of tests conducted would be known before the number that return positive.

Do not worry, just like after the 7th if January when the 2nd State of Emergency was declared, the very next day the cases started dropping sharply and after a month the number of cases was down 90%.

The only measure back then: restaurants urged to close by 8PM. Life was as normal as before as we all know.

Same will happen again, miraculously, just in time to state that the Olympics will be held in a safe environment for everyone.

Regarding proactive measures as increased testing, contact tracing, encouraging companies to remote work and getting more hospitals ready for Covid patients: will not happen once again.

Foreign countries: be the ones who listen and respect what japanese citizens want and do not send your athletes to this banana republic with wonderful people but with a disastrous government.

Ah yes, golden week, when the crowds everywhere compress like a tin of sardines. This will test the nation for taking prophylactic measures. Will fail of course.

Don't worry everyone;

Koike is going to turn the lights off early and tuck you all in.

16 ( +16 / -0 )

Trains were super crowded in Tokyo last night and today as well...people still in business suits going to the office was a head scratcher as today is a national holiday!

14 ( +14 / -0 )

I am looking forward to the Olympics! How about you all?!

I had to re-read the last part you wrote. I misread it at first, but I thought it was correct first time round.

Things are looking up...well the number of reported cases that is..as for the Olympics..

An edit button would be good.

To clarify - results published today are taken from tests conducted 3 days prior. The testing capacity for Tokyo is 97,000. Incredibly no media yet brings any attention to this. Ironically see a headline today about unused vaccines though.

Perfect, another high number tomorrow and we will be all set for the GW drop. Low testing will ensure we have an illusion of a full virus retreat before lifting the SOE. Though the smile on the face will probably not last long.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

What SOE? Tomorrow I will be back in the classroom teaching coughing and sneezing children. And I will have to travel on crowded public transport to get there. Does Corona virus not affect children and teachers? Does this pathetic useless government actually think I am going to then seal myself into my home during my free time? The government clearly doesn't think I need to be protected in my work time! So, bring on Golden Week which is only three days for me. I will be out and about socializing because clearly if I am safe in a classroom with poor ventilation I am absolutely safe everywhere else.

Good time NOT to live in big cities!

Objective

Hi Tora, They give you a 2 month window to renew your license so you could pick a lighter day and time when fewer people are about. Unless you left it to the last second?

I hear you. Working in kanto and only time off is during GW holidays. Still think should be able to do this kind of thing online though. It's not 1995 anymore and we in midst of a so called pandemic. But yeah did leave it s little late too.....

Back on topic please.

Kyakusenbi_Arimasu, rest of the world is actually testing it's people than just a handful of people in Japan to keep the numbers low.

Japan ranks in the lower part of the countries for it's response to COVID-19.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Good thing I'm headed south, away from Tokyo for GW! Oops, wait a minute...

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Like others I expect the numbers to go down very soon. Best comment - Reckless - ‘keeping them safe in boxes just in case things get out of hand’

6 ( +6 / -0 )

@Paul14,

Your frustrated post is a perfect illustration of the Governments failure.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Test numbers are found in the link published in the article (have mentioned previous posts) But its a bit hidden. Anyway, tests from which todays results are taken (conducted on April 26th) - 12,533.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I was wrong in my prediction. I said it would be the middle of the week Tokyo surpasses 1000, but it's Thursday. My bad.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Games are still on though, its all a big joke, nothing serious or nothing to be concerned about koike has it all under control , stay home, dont drink, dont enjoy your holiday, stay in fornt of the tv swallowing the propaganda you will be fine, the rona wont come for ya. But make sure ya get ya ass off on the train to work come next week.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

No way! After everyone has been trying so hard. I cant believe it.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Send a few vials to my local veterinarian. I’ll be happy to get my shot there when I take my dogs in for their yearly shot.

SOE declared and numbers go up.......

Save lives by being responsible to yourself and others. Please stay safe.

"Why is Tokyo only testing 12,000 people every day?"

It isn't. Yesterday fewer than 8,000 tests were carried out in a conurbation of 30M people.

https://stopcovid19.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/en/

This is criminal negligence.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

LA County in California, which has roughly the same population of Tokyo, tests an average of 66,000 people per day. Why is Tokyo only testing 12,000 people every day?
