I suggest that All those doomsayers here move to China where it’s apparently safe, with only 9000 confirmed cases. You could quit your worrying & live normal lives again.

Nope, I'm not a guest - this is my home. And no, I will never become a Japanese citizen, as long as Japan e.g. lacks in animal and human rights and fails to recognize dual citizenship.

I welcome each and every person living or even staying just for a short while in my home country to suggest how things could be done better. Because you know, that's how things progress, that's how things become better and more fair to EVERYONE THERE.

Excellent post! I agree 100%

Good on you mate!

Hospitals are not seeing large numbers at the moment-when they do will be time to worry.

@carpslidy

Your a guest here as many of us were or are, imagine if a Japanese person went to your home country and said "things aren't fair here, they do it better where I come from" imagine how people would react.

All means stay home that’s your choice but don't think because you pay taxes you have the right to demand change.

Either become a Japanese citizen and make Japan your home country or learn to live with the Japanese way of doing things.

In the end no one is going to listen to you so your just making yourself frustrated without achieving anything.

"In Japan, the reported deaths are low, but I haven't seen any news or official source as how they count deaths. We do know they don't test enough pre-mortem (948 tests in the city of 15 million), and certainly not postmortem, so it's extremely likely to be undercounted hugely."

Post-mortem examination is NOT undertaken as a matter of course. Nowhere (as far as I am aware) is a post-mortem mandatory regardless of the mortis causa.

You should show evidence to make such a claim.

Despite the pandemic Japan's excess death number during the first half of this year is lower than those in the previous three years:

上半期の超過死亡、コロナでも減少 過去3年と比較

If you still can't believe it, go and unearth mass graves anywhere across Japan where unreported dead bodies may be buried.

@TrevorPeace

You're absolutely correct; still working and not paying much attention.

Thanks a lot; have a nice one.

Unless your country is different then please let us know which country that is so that we can all check.

Post mortem is required for suspicious sudden, violent, unnatural deaths and highly likely to involve the police.

People come here and talk as if every single death is/must be preceded by it!

I know it the Latinism sounds cool, but please.

@vinke

If you live somewhere, it doesn't automatically make that place "a good place". If something is wrong, try to fix it. Try to make things more fair. Try to make things better.

I hope you realize how condescending that sounds.

What’s crazy is how many people cant do basic math and say “there’s nothing to worry about”.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Zoroto, you don’t believe me based on what?

i have been going to a packed office for months. Everybody’s temp is taken at the entrance and everyone wears a mask. The company employs over 1,000 people. So far we’ve had one case way back in March. The person recovered.

why would I lie?

do what you want. Lock yourself up like a hermit for the rest of your life. I hope you are happy. Me? I choose to get on with my life.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

@Monty

Or will you quit your job, your wife too, lockdown yourself in your house, never go out anymore, go only 1x to the supermarket and buy Cup Ramen for the next 6 months???

Of course not!

Of course yes ! - if you understand science, facts and reason, and have even the slightest doze of self-discipline and constraint.

E.g., me: ever since February, I've been working remotely, avoiding all social outings, going to the supermarket max 1-2 times a week (mostly buying online), and going out only to the park or so, only walking or by bike, no public transportation. No exhibitions or events. Eating healthy food and using fresh ingredients - no need for cup ramen junk. And I know I'm not the only one.

I don't really understand though how or why would you "quit your wife"..? I'm in extremely good terms with my spouse, pretty much the only person I've been seeing face to face this year - and all is fine. We're both happy. (Would be happier though, if there weren't so many fact deniers out there, and people who are risking others all the time.)

And people who are Nonstop complaining about how Japan is handling the Virus, should consider if it is not better for them to leave Japan and go back to your home country.

Because Nonstop complaining about Japan and living here, doesn't match together.

Sorry, but it doesn't go that way. If you live somewhere, it doesn't automatically make that place "a good place". If something is wrong, try to fix it. Try to make things more fair. Try to make things better. Turning your back on the malpractices does not make them go away.

But if you go back to your home country, probably you will be surprised how they handle the Virus.

And surprised not in a good way...

Actually, I'm pretty content with the actions my home country has been making; severe restrictions on entertainment, nightlife, restaurants and bars in order to try to slow the spread down, but still enabling them to work. Majority of the people are remote-working and remote-studying, even the small kids. Finding new and inventive ways of keeping businesses afloat and people entertained through the use of new online solutions, gift certificates, crowd funding, etc. Being at the forefront of covid-19 research. Utilising new methods in detecting covid-19 at the airports. Encouraging anyone even with the slightest doubt and the slightest symptom to get a covid-19 test - and they will get it (unlike Japan, where even seriously ill people are turned away from the clinics and the hospitals). Being open about the contagion, not stigmatising the disease.

And nope, not going back, yet. My spouse means the world to me, and both of our lives are here now. We can't just suddenly drop it all off and go. Also, with the current (xenophobic) restrictions and demands in place by Japan, I couldn't easily just visit my country either and come back to Japan later.

the true number of infected is likely in the tens of millions now

Well I think it’s 40 million infections recognized globally as of yesterday, so you are suggesting Japan has upwards of 20% of global infections, but they are going unnoticed?

If so... great! It means Japanese people must be relatively resistant, because people aren’t dying in droves here from it.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I'm not sure whether it it OK or not, however, many Japanese ignore the Covid-19 at all and enjoy "Kimetsu no Yaiba". Fortunately, Japan is in such situation.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

is still unbelievable to find a developed country where the number of tests decreases that much on the weekends, that talks about a lack of proper medical care

@KnowBetter: Agree, the numbers are getting worse and worse by the day, the true number of infected is likely in the tens of millions now, and most likely the worst affected country in the world

Well if millions have been infected and the health system hasn't been stretched what are you panicing about?

There are plenty of flights out if you think Japan is doing so badly.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

NYTimes which is not fake news

LOL, which comedy club are you next performing at? I'll buy a ticket

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

Good lord, the level of hand ringing by some here is over the top. Have a look around. The subways are packed, the restaurants and bars are doing a brisk business. I myself have been working in a packed office since this started. If this thing was as contagious and deadly as people here seem to think the healthcare system would have collapsed long ago. It hasn’t and we are NINE months into this.

-15 ( +7 / -22 )

the numbers are getting worse and worse by the day, the true number of infected is likely in the tens of millions now, and most likely the worst affected country in the world

@ Ipanama Beach - no need to exaggerate. Japan is far from worst in the world. What is your basis for stating that?

Japan has done reasonable by Asian standards in this pandemic. But 15.82% testing positive is far too high, and just 948 tests in one day is alarming.

-7 ( +8 / -15 )

A good number for this time in the week. Active cases are inching their way downwards. Japan doing a great job and the many people wearing masks are testament to that

-22 ( +2 / -24 )

No deaths in Tokyo . Good news.

-12 ( +7 / -19 )

so we have to (hopefully) live with it for the time being.

Exactly.

That is what the people have finally to understand: Live with it!

Do your best personal prevention to protect yourself, your families and everyone around you, and live with it!

After 10 months in the pandemic, everybody here should already understand how Japan is handling the tests.

And...It doesn't makes any sense to complain day by day about cases and tests numbers

Even the numbers of infection are 0 or 1.000.000...it doesn't change anything to your personal life.

Or will you quit your job, your wife too, lockdown yourself in your house, never go out anymore, go only 1x to the supermarket and buy Cup Ramen for the next 6 months???

Of course not!

You will live your life. Same as usual...just with your best personal prevention.

And if people, after 10 months in the pandemic, do not yet understand what is the best personal prevention, than I am sorry to say that, those people are either completely ignorant or walk around with closed eyes and closed ears since 10 months.

And people who are Nonstop complaining about how Japan is handling the Virus, should consider if it is not better for them to leave Japan and go back to your home country.

Because Nonstop complaining about Japan and living here, doesn't match together.

But if you go back to your home country, probably you will be surprised how they handle the Virus.

As before, the number 24 is the key one.  The rest is just noise. Why people obsess over ratio etc mystifies me as it is not a relevant number to the threat to us all.

-17 ( +4 / -21 )

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government on Wednesday reported 150 new cases of the coronavirus, up 11 from Tuesday. The number is the result of 948 tests conducted on Oct 18.

WOW, that ratio is getting worse every day with it now being 15.82% testing positive of those being tested.

Yup.

They keep testing fewer people but more are testing positive. Do you still trust the low test numbers now?

Nope. Never did.

BTW in yesterday's news

Tokyo government considers fining people who knowingly go out when infected with COVID-19

https://japantoday.com/category/crime/tokyo-government-considers-fining-people-who-knowingly-go-out-when-infected-with-covid-19

If Tokyo does THAT, I guarantee you the number of people willing to be tested will probably be more than halved. Who's going to want to pay a few man for a test and THEN get fined for going out if they test positive??

So if they do implement that, expect the numbers to be even more skewed.

7 ( +16 / -9 )

@KnowBetter: Agree, the numbers are getting worse and worse by the day, the true number of infected is likely in the tens of millions now, and most likely the worst affected country in the world yet we are still being told to believe these numbers. No one with a brain would say it's getting better in Japan
