Reduced numbers due to both the 3-day holiday and obon holiday which caused a lot of clinics and testing centers to close.

It's interesting how all of the news articles like to leave out the # of new persons tested, etc.

Look for this numbers to surge in the next 1-2 weeks when clinics/testing labs are back online. Japanese government have done nothing to attempt slow down the spread, and in fact have been pushing for the opposite. There's absolutely no reason why the real number of infections would be dropping.

If you look at the testing numbers today (as of now)

https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/newpage_12918.html

it is 836/6440 tested, that is a positive rate of nearly 13% on a national level.

This clearly indicates that the numbers seen today are a result of under-testing rather than any real decrease in trends. If testing was at the same level as the days of 400+ cases, the same number or higher reported cases will result.

Name one thing that the government have done which would have slowed down the spread of disease? They have done nothing and it would be inconceivable that the disease goes away/slow down on its own.

The national government will almost certainly use this obon numbers to go forward with Go-To-Eats campaign, and remove the limits on 5000 attendees for events by the end of this month.

@blahblah

While I agree with your sentiment, it's been explained previously that there is no direct relationship between the number of tests published each day vs the total positives for that day due to some test results taking longer to back than others. On the face of it though, if the actual positive rate is over 10% that would be a clear indication that there isn't enough testing.

I also agree that any slightly positive news will be misappropriated by the govt and lead to yet another wave of infections.

I almost get the feeling some people posting on JT don't want the numbers to go down, but of course that couldn't be so.

But the least some of you could say is that you hope you are wrong and that numbers don't go back up after the Obon holidays.

As blahblah says. Name one thing this government have done to curb the spread of Covid? Nothing.

No more lockdown, no shutting of entertainment business, no prefectural border closures, no mass testing, no working track & trace system, no mask rules on transport, no ban on Japanese businessmen travelling around the world.

Had a great time this week in Okinawa - Bring on the tourism - the people on the ground are not bothered by COVID. They embraced the tourism economy I brought - will go over and over again.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

And people here discuss always the same things every day. All the comments and posts repeat and repeat.

Mongy, heal thyself.

188 ? the numbers are unreliable, kind of cheating.

Actually, there is a delay in numbers...these results are from testing a couple of days ago. Today's numbers were in the 600s...lets see when they are published.

Numbers across the country down everywhere - but recoveries high so there was an actual decrease in active cases. Great news, but won't please many posters on this site who want things to get worse.

The trend is not declining. Daily numbers do not constitute a trend.

That said, if you believed the posters on Japan Today, there would have been 100000 infections a day by now!

If everyone had listened to the "nothing to worry about crowd" we would have 100,000 infections a day (or at least a lot more than we have now). Just look at how things are going in that country on the other side of the Pacific with the leader who keeps telling everyone there is nothing to worry about and it'll all magically disappear on its own. 60-70,000 cases per day.

I'm way more comfortable living in a country where people take the doom and gloom merchants seriously and only have about 1,000 deaths than I would be in a country where half the population believe in the magical Coronavirus fairy whose pixy dust will protect them and have over 165,000 deaths.

Its a 3 day test turnaround. 188 is from Saturday. When most people were on holiday. It's not 188 "today".

I am im this Virus topic here on JT since 8 months. I remember well the fear mongering peoples prediction that Tokyo will see 400.000 and more infected or death people.

What did they always say? Wait another 2 weeks, wait another 2 weeks...

But for their credit, we all understand and learned that the virus will not dissapear.

We also learned that the numbers will fall and the numbers will rise.

This situation will continue until a vaccine is found.

In my opinion it makes no sense to tell these numbers every day.

And people here discuss always the same things every day. All the comments and posts repeat and repeat.

What Japan and the rest of the world have to do is, live with the Virus by doing your best personal prevention and wait for the vaccine to come.

Because the situation of the Virus and number of cases will continue to rise and fall until a vaccine is found.

Perhaps the J-gov could learn from the Swedish model, not that it was perfect.

Deaths are unaffected by obon yet after six weeks of ever increasing infections we are thankfully yet to (and hopefully will never) see the big increase so many predicted.

Precisely Monty.

Tokyo, Osaka and other large cities continued to see high levels of infections since the central government fully lifted the nationwide state of emergency in late May.

How ironic, lift the state of emergency and WHAM everything is going to hell! We have had an unbelievable increase in positive cases, in the midst of the prefecture declaring it's own "state of emergency" and now have well over 1200 cases, roughly 1,100 in the past three weeks, and 800 in the past week alone.

Please everyone, stay the hell out of Okinawa, for your's and our sake too!

Oh and to those folks that talk about the numbers of "discharged" vs new cases, we have over close to 850 hospitalized or in quarantine facilities, and only 290 or so "discharged" with the new cases out stripping the "discharged" at close to a 3 to 1 pace.

We are over 43.1 per 100,000, and Number 2 on that list is Tokyo at 16.89 per 100,000 people!

The lower number has clearly triggered the doom and gloom merchants. Clearly though the lower number has been influenced by the long weekend. That said, if you believed the posters on Japan Today, there would have been 100000 infections a day by now!
