The Tokyo metropolitan government on Sunday reported 212 new cases of the coronavirus, down from 256 reported on Saturday. It is the 4th consecutive day that Tokyo’s reported cases of infection has surpassed 200.

Of the total, 109 are in their 20s and 30s, officials said.

The tally brought Tokyo's cumulative total to 19,333.

The number of infected people with severe symptoms requiring hospitalization is 39, two more than Saturday, health officials said.

Nationwide, the tally was 740. After Tokyo, the prefectures with the highest number of cases were Osaka (121), Fukuoka (63), Kanagawa (50), Aichi (50), Chiba (36), Saitama (31), Okinawa (25) and Hyogo (24).

Nine deaths were reported.

Obon infection will take up to two weeks.

The most important information that for some reason JT is unwilling to add every single time these daily numbers are released is the number of tests.

212 cases means nothing if we don’t know how many tests were conducted.

Were there 212 tests or 5,000 or what?

10 ( +14 / -4 )

Would knowing the number of recoveries be helpful, just asking.

If you are so concerned about the number of tests it’s on the Tokyo Metropolitan Govt website. Very simple to look it up every day. It’s no secret.

3 weeks ago some doctor predicted 1000 cases on 27th August approximately 10 days after obon, let's see how far he is correct?

Bed occupancy seems better now at a glance, not sure.

Fukouka is at 65%, Osaka 68%, Okinawa 87%. Those are the plces with highest rates. 0kinawa was more than 100% recently. Overall occupancy for the country is 28%

For those who want number of tests , better to look for number of people tested as many persons are tested more than once

Reckless

The number of hospitalizations is the more important number in my opinion. In that sense, Tokyo is doing well but I think some areas outside of Tokyo are running out of beds.

Good you say it is your opinion.

Testing is more important that is why every country on the planet except Japan and a

handful of countries even those without resources are testing to understand the extend of

the spread and contain the virus.

Exactly.

The powers that be with the help of the media don't want people to know

whether there is community spread of the virus or not.

There is no data for today, the last data was Aug 22 which was for yesterday.

I have provided the link above you can check.

Yawn, this daily reporting of cases is getting old. I think we all get it, people get sick everyday. Time to move on to something else.

Data for 23th. just got uploaded. But the Total PCR tests for 23th are not, the Totals are from 20th.

They can't give a clean growth % because their system cannot match the dates.

In the 21st century they cannot track the PCR Test and Results dates... its soo sad.

Masks off time. Everythings okay... its good we're letting back in all those from overseas ... particularly the Indians who've gone over 3 Million today... very reassuring here. And 2 weeks quarantine ... is totally insufficient - Chinese recommend 1 month.

People obsessing about number of positives and tests and dates all this time and still don't have a clue how to look at them.

The tests have a long turnaround time for the results to come out, I don't know how long exactly for the tests Japan uses because I don't look for the info but the info must be around somewhere, but if ithr turnaround is around 48-72 hours then the data for the number of positives and the data for the number of tests are probably a good match with that 3day disparity

Is there any reason not to track the dates when the PCR Test was performed?

Why do we only know the date of the Result?

...this is humiliating.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Lol, gave you a clue already you must be able to figure that out by now

You are right no data for PCR tests, just big blank space.

I was wonder why they have released results but no the number of test.

Very important but strangely omitted is that 7 are elderly in their ninetys

Hope they beat the virus and get to live as long as possible.

If the cost of not bankrupting hotels, restaurants and the people being able to travel overseas, is a few people in their 90's die a little early. I am okay with that.

Cases dropping, and for yet another day, recoveries have outpaced new infections. The doom and gloom merchants on this site just aren't getting their way, are they? Japan slowly getting on top of the pandemic. Great to see.

Is the go to campaign still on? Curious as I saw a sign advertising it in Tokyo yesterday, which I thought was weird. Wondering whether go to affected numbers or not

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Its going to keep increasing and spiking even more. Meanwhile the LDP and their sock puppets will continue to put their heads in the sand and say everything is fine.

To quote another great leader-

if you test you get cases so slow the testing down please!

Japan seems to have heeded the call.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

How can the numbers go down significantly when little is being done to achieve that?

If the masks and distancing work and help slow the spread we should see lower numbers.

Aside that you are right there is no (known) reason for the virus to slow down.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

If the masks and distancing work and help slow the spread we should see lower numbers.

A cluster is reported in a Tokyo office. Of the 100 staffs 50 tested positive and all of them were wearing mask in the office.

A staff tested positive early this month and it wasn't until 3 days ago everybody in the office was tested.

Mask is not the ultimate panacea that prevents infection from this virus.

And...? So..... What?

Just cases. Just cases people. Breathe. Live life. Stop being so afraid.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

It would be great if there was more info about the 39 requiring hospitalization, such as the ages.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Areas of high people density such as the 100 people working in a typical open plan Japanese office are working in close proximity to each other.

Tokyo is the leader in new infections, with few exceptions, everyday

Social distancing signs at Tokyo airports tell us to keep 2 meters apart but that is absolutely impossible in Tokyo.

And this is why cluster after cluster keep appearing at offices...

Yep, still on. Went away for the weekend, hardly anyone on the Shinkansen or in our hotel. A voice recording on the train said Shinkansen services are being "revised" as of Sept 18, so I guess they realise there's no point running near-empty trains.

This induced panic is decimating the tourism and peripheral industries, and I hope most of them can survive until the world comes to its senses and starts easing up.

All the masks and alcohol aren't working.

How do you know this ? Did you read it somewhere ?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@ Serrano,

Masks, alcohol (for surfaces) and hand hygiene are certainly working to somewhat control spread (even though I think it's obvious the virus is much more widespread than official numbers report.)

In my opinion the reason for continued spread is the lack of any other significant measures, dropping of guard (in restaurants etc) and total lack of decisive Government action.

It's encouraging that the spread appears to be less lethal, but it's terrible to realize Japan is going to be dealing with this long after every other country has returned to essentially normal life by taking strict measures, and widespread testing/tracing and quarantine where needed.
