The Tokyo Metropolitan Government on Wednesday reported 317 new cases of the coronavirus, up 24 from Tuesday. The number is the result of 1,010 tests conducted on Nov 8.

It was the first time since Aug 20 that the number of reported infections in Tokyo has topped 300.

The tally brought Tokyo's cumulative total to 33,377.

The number of infected people in Tokyo with severe symptoms is 38, up five down from Tuesday, health officials said.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 1,524. After Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Osaka (256), Hokkaido (197), Kanagawa (130), Saitama (116), Hyogo (70), Chiba (65), Okinawa (36) and Miyagi (33).

And now while everyone is enjoying Go To Eat, and many hotels are completely booked due to Go To Travel for the 3-day weekend about to come. Let's enjoy crowded trains, shops and restaurants together while spending for the economy! As long as you test 1000 people in the biggest metropolitan in the world, you're gonna find what you want to tell your people. Are dead citizens really worth the Olympics? I'm afraid the answer to the Japanese government is yes.

That's one positive out of every 3 tested.

Yeah its climbing. But we knew this was coming. The fall and winter wave is supposed to be worse than the first one. Hope that vaccine is ready soon

I 100% agree with you!

People should be a little bit more patient and do their best personal prevention, wearing masks, wash hands, use sanitizers and keep social distance where it is possible.

As long as you follow that, you are fine.

And if the vaccine is here and if it is safe, we hopefully can go back to our normal lives.

And I agree with You Monty!

They don't write the number of deaths in their own countries. I wonder why.

Because for those of us who live in Japan the numbers here are more important.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

The numbers of cases are important, but the locations and movements of those infected are just as important. The demographic break down points to younger more sociable people and workers. Are they catching the virus on trains or in bars? Where are the hot spots? This is extremely important information to control the spread of the virus.

There has been close to a thousand new cases in Tokyo so far this week and it’s only Wednesday. Wearing a mask and getting a blessing from a shrine is not going to control the spread of this virus.

And the Olympic Committee is still keen on holding the Olympics next year. I don't think so.

Banzai mentality.

exactly!

or just shoganai. sounds better

seems awfully high from 1100 tests ... and yes would be good for them to tell us where the hot spots are

Yes, here, in Japan. Why is it all TokyoTokyoTokyo?

It's getting to the point where the number of "positive" tests has very little meaning because the testing regime is unclear - are many of the same people being tested repeatedly, such as people in the entertainment or "evening" industries? Are doctors testing everyone who presents with suspected symptoms or just telling some people to go home and rest it off? Or is the government hiding cases by artificially restricting the number of tests to look good for the Olympics? Who knows? But the arcane testing regime is not atypical of the way things are done in Japan.

And there are many questions surrounding the accuracy of the RT-PCR tests anyway. How many people testing positive in Japan and elsewhere are real cases, and how many are false positives because testers ran too many cycles and/or picked up traces of dead virus remnants or other similar coronaviruses?

I think he most important indicators are the number of hospitalised cases, those with severe symptoms, and the numbers of deaths directly attributable to SARS-CoV-19. In Japan these figures are changing very little and are very low as a percentage of the population.

In other words, don't panic.

Yes, here, in Japan. Why is it all TokyoTokyoTokyo?

@cleo, Ahh, hmm no brainer here. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Tokyo is the capital city of the country and that the numbers of infected in Tokyo supersede any another area in the country?

Also the stock market celebrates highest numbers ever. I begin to NOT understand this economic ‘system’. Anyone still does?

Anyone who says they do is probably pulling your leg :-)

...and Osaka reported 256 and Hokkaido 197, both all time highs.

The stockmarket has to go up for the big realty owners and companies or they can not continue to loan cheap money from banks against their stock value. that wouls mean they can not cover operational losses and they would default on earlier loans and credit lines. So they are creating a huge bubble and everyone is hoping others will see it explode in their face when, not if, it does. Does that help to explain?

Vinny - seems awfully high from 1100 tests

Nearly 25%

They have obviously broken the random number generator of the Excel sheet.

The nbr. of positives needs to be lower, and the nbr. of totals needs to be higher.

I personally don't think people attach much meaning to the daily infections number at all lately.

But you are right . The fundamentals are rubbish.

However if I may speculate , the Nikkei surge I think has more to do with the world recognition of Biden's win and hope rather than anything else.

@robert maes too makes sense though

It’s obvious that it’s because of the ingenious GoTo travel campaign, but no. They’ll hold off admitting that until enough foreigners come into the country and then it will be their fault.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

1010 tests.

Just Tokyo have a population of over 13 millions people and including the whole great area they are over 32 millions.

In Italy with a total population which is less than half of the one of Japan they make daily tests of over 200.000 per day.

So reading these numbers and interpreting them we can clearly understand that their official numbers are toned down on purpose.

I do not believe that there are only 300 cases.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

1000 tests and 30% of them are infected... talk about a cover up, more testing please!

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Now imagine if they tested at a rate that pretty much every other advanced country ( without an Olympic agenda ) is testing..is..hundreds of thousand a day...30% is?

Wait but that would mean a third of every school and office building has covid . Are you saying that in a would mean that in about a month we will reach herd immunity ?

50000 yesterday in some countries, just one day.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Although everyone knows, the elderly people seek stricter restrictions, while the younger people don't mind the Covid-19 so much. It is difficult to reconcile the gap of their opinion, however, considering the present situation, I think the J-government should shrink slightly the scope of the "Go-to" campaign".

Recent suicide increase may be partly due to the "Go-to" campaign, because those who have struggled with their financial problem must have feeling of despair after they find the wealthy people enjoy the "Go-to" travel.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Australia really must seriously rethink its plan, reported here yesterday, to reopen its air corridor with Japan.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Ahh, hmm no brainer here. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Tokyo is the capital city of the country and that the numbers of infected in Tokyo supersede any another area in the country?

Then we would have the BBC reporting numbers in London only, CNN reporting Washington only, Paris only, Berlin only, Moscow only....

What about the worrying rise in numbers in Hokkaido? Osaka?

There’s more to Japan than just Tokyo.

the Nikkei surge I think has more to do with the world recognition of Biden's win and hope rather than anything else

Yes, that and the news of the vaccine.

Interesting and excellent point!

A fine impetus for having the Olympic Games and certainly reflects the successful experiment with the recent gymnastics meet.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I can see most people ranting about the lack of action from the Japanese government regarding the supposedly terrible virus and what most people fail to realise is that Japan is not the west, here you are treated like an adult and it is you and only you the one who will assess the risk and decide the best course of action depending on your personal situation, therefore no mandatory lockdowns, massive testing or compulsory masks (Isn't this beautiful nation the greatest on earth?) . It is so sad to see that most westerners need daddy government to tell'em what to do, why can't people think and decide by themselves?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

I suspect the 1000 tested were people who experienced some symptoms, in other words the Japanese government decided not to test anyone other than those who show some signs. There is no mass testing policy in Japan, deliberately to keep the numbers down and stand a better chance to get the go ahead for the games. The actual numbers of infections must be in the hundreds of thousands so far, if we compare Tokyo to other metropolis. I feel sorry for the Japanese people who believe the virus didn't make it here, it's obvious there isn't policy in place for testing, actually there is one: let's not test anyone.
