The Tokyo metropolitan government on Monday reported 419 new coronavirus cases, down 123 from Sunday. It was the first time the figure has been under 500 since April 26.

The average for Tokyo over the past seven days stands at 784.

People in their 20s (126 cases) and their 30s (85) accounted for the highest numbers, while 69 cases were aged 60 and over.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 85, up one from Sunday, health officials said. The nationwide figure was 1,227, up four from Sunday.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases as of 6:30 p.m. was 3,680. After Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Osaka (382), Hokkaido (372), Aichi (362), Fukuoka (282), Kanagawa (199), Hiroshima (198), Saitama (135), Chiba (128), Hyogo (120), Okayama (108), Kyoto (103), Ibaraki (80), Gifu (70), Kumamoto (70), Okinawa (59), Shizuoka (47), Nara (39), Kagoshima (38) and Nagano (36).

The number of coronavirus-related deaths reported nationwide was 122.

What a coincidence!!! Seems like we're right on track with decreasing numbers just in time to lift the SOE almost 2 months before the Olympics and 4 months before Suga stands for re-election...the government is doing a nice job of decreasing testing and playing with numbers to fit their agenda.

Still though, the conspiracy theorists will no doubt be out.

Noticing that lowering testing is lowering the cases number is being a conspiracy theorist ?

Or would it be a simple mathematical deduction ?

26 ( +27 / -1 )

Wait until the middle of the week and they start reporting weekday #s and it will go up again in spite of pathetically low testing levels.

24 ( +25 / -1 )

A miraculous and sudden drop.

Surely it has nothing to do with the lowest testing numbers since Oct 2020.

https://stopcovid19.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/en/

Just as expected. Nothing new here.

Numbers must fit the “Olympic dream”.

Does anyone still believe the numbers?

If so, go outside and see how nothing changed. Then ask yourself how could Tokyo do a “better job” then Osaka, and still have a significant drop in the numbers right on time to force the end of SOE and for Bach’s visit.

Transparency is not a thing around here, at all.

The japanese people are being fully disrespected by its own government (who’s nothing but IOC’s puppet).

23 ( +23 / -0 )

Disgust is the only appropriate reaction for the way Tokyo government is lying to its people

20 ( +20 / -0 )

Thomas. I know. Wild eh! Last few days have been getting weird. What with Paralympians on TV appealing for support for the Olympics as well. I wonder what other curve balls are coming in the next few weeks

Talk about waging the dog absolutely silly!

Seriously JT please post the number of tests done

Dropped from 120,000 to 30,000 in 3 days.

Cases drop from 900 to 400 in the same period.

Only someone that has a serious problem with logic doesn't see a clear manipulation of the numbers

18 ( +19 / -1 )

Not yet seeing the May 15th testing numbers on the site?

16 ( +16 / -0 )

The tests are posted to https://stopcovid19.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/en/cards/number-of-tested/

As of 7:30pm JST, page still not updated for the May15th (always has been updated by 6 - 6:30pm JST) Prelimnary testing numbers are usually posted the day before, so this is quite strange for today for some unknown reason.

16 ( +16 / -0 )

Osaka numbers also much lower.

Easy to lower numbers when you cut testing by two thirds.

120,000 down to 30,000

And you drop the positive by only half.

Which means the percentage of positive cases is higher!

Oops

@ experts in numbers

Of course, cases' numbers get down when there are fewer tests. But what about the positive ratio. Las time I found it, a few days ago, it seemed stable. Couldn't find it just now. The layout on that official page is awful. I tend to look here now:

https://toyokeizai.net/sp/visual/tko/covid19/en.html

Another question: one of you (Antique?) said that the tests done by the government were only a small fraction of the total. But then I guess that they can only downplay that part and not the number of tests performed by private hospitals. So why did it go down from 100,000 to less than 30,00 in three days?

11 ( +12 / -1 )

@Pim

Possibly reasons.

Weekend numbers break down not released yet by private or not tabulated ( notice that in the total it says 30,000 but in the breakdown only public figure is presently available.)

If you look at the graphics you will notice a drop in testing generally on weekends and holidays, This is because private and many smaller hospitals have reduced testing capacity (as I previously mentioned my daughter's friend it the IT person in one major private lab and the staff is way over worked, she is just the tech support and hasn't had a day off in weeks, so at some point something has to give or slow down)

Whatever the reason things just don't add up, Tokyo claims only 84 in serious condition but the hospitals say their ICU beds are at near capacity, are we to believe that in all of Tokyo there are less than 100 ICU beds? ( If my information is correct Tokyo university hospital and the 2 main branches of Tokyo women's university hospital have over 80 ICU beds)

Again the government numbers just don't make logical sense.

Where are they hiding the dead bodies that would come with such a scandal?

No need to hide them, just don't count them.

Osaka is reporting daily on people dying alone at home after being refused a space in hospitals.

The Japanese government refuses to conduct autopsies on those over 65.

Strange how only Osaka is reporting these deaths but nothing in Tokyo.

Are we to believe that in Japan's largest metropolitan area no one is being rejected a space in hospitals and no one is dying at home like in Osaka?

One has to really want to ignore reality to swallow that one.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

The Tokyo site gives the latest figures 16 May as 8538 tests.

For comparison, check out daily testing rates at this site:

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/daily-tests-per-thousand-people-smoothed-7-day

Japan is at 0.7 tests per 1000 people.

Another glaring inconsistency of figures released: if you look at the R number - (effective reproduction number, hope I got that right), according to

https://toyokeizai.net/sp/visual/tko/covid19/en.html

The R number in Tokyo hasn't spiked and has been hovering just over or even under 1 since mid-January. So why in that case did they declare fresh SoEs, and if it is so low, everything must be hunky dory in hospitals, right?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Out of 5671 tests. They don't like testing it seems. Why don't they just stop it altogether then?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Out of 5671 tests. They don't like testing it seems. Why don't they just stop it altogether then?

They will as soon as the games start.

They won't have any choice but to stop.

Japan as a country hasn't been able to consistently test over 100,000 and even getting over that number was very rare and using every possible method, place, etc.. they could find.

During the Olympics they promised to test daily everyone coming to the games and everyone working at the games.

This means between 100,000 and 175,000 test a day.

Japan has only once done slightly over 120,000, only once.

Does anyone truly believe that Tokyo is suddenly going to be able to test 100,000 plus a day every day?

And what are the chances the 46 other prefectures are going to agree to have all their testing facilities given over to the Tokyo Olympics testing.

"YOU MOD THIS PAGE LIKE A BUNCH OF LEFTISTS,"

As a 'regular' critic of this Human World and commenter in this space, I can sincerely promise you that this statement is as untrue as any assertion on Fox News... IF ONLY they favored people who are cursed with compulsive sympathy and altruism, many more of my own posts would have appeared longer than the morning shift change. Interesting to hear your comment that, also, people with no sympathy nor altruism are also silenced. They seemed to be dominant here. You'll be getting a "COMMENT REMOVED: RUDE" email soon, I suspect. I actually try to spend time on my posts to be sure I am accurately stating things. Doesn't matter. Especially, ANYTHING critical of 'they who cannot be named', the most psychopathic people currently in our World demonstrating Mankind's fatal illness of mass, conscienceless murder upon helpless, enslaved prisoners. Naw. It's just politics ala George Orwell. The most important, real 'news' is not reported and those who determine these policies do not want anyone filling in the holes...

2 ( +3 / -1 )

The rate of positive tests can easily be manipulated by gating the symptomatic and adding the correct number of non-symptomatic. With the level of testing being conducted, this would be trivial to manage.

GW is in the rear-view mirror. Since then, most have gone back to their routines of social distancing. But wait! Fear more! The India variant is on the horizon!

Yawn. Absolute lies lies and more lies.

Where are they hiding the dead bodies that would come with such a scandal?

The strong Japanese spirit has beaten this virus for good! Now open the bars again, I'm thirsty!

-20 ( +8 / -28 )

Osaka numbers also much lower. Think it’s time for the doomsday guys to throw in the hat and say sorry. Japan is handling this out much better than the West and their ‘experts’. No need for lockdowns and much lower deaths, it’s all good.

-21 ( +1 / -22 )

"The reported numbers are too low for my liking so I must call BS." The conspiracy theorists on this forum love to peddle fear. Things are not so bad here. Plus... vaccines are coming in big numbers soon. Japan has got to be the best country to live in during this pandemic. You have all of your freedoms, economy is chugging along, and MOST of the public is very cautious.

-25 ( +1 / -26 )

382 in Osaka - things taking a turn for the better.

-26 ( +2 / -28 )

Shikoku with its fewest cases for a while, Hyogo a lot lower too.

Suspect this wave is starting to die down, and the warmer weather is helping suppress the virus.

With the vaccination program starting to scale up, and summer approaching, things are looking good.

Still though, the conspiracy theorists will no doubt be out.

i am very happy to see this drop! go go everyone! we beating covid :)
