The Tokyo metropolitan government on Wednesday reported 500 new cases of the coronavirus, up 128 from Tuesday. The number is the result of 1,431 tests conducted on Nov 29.

The tally brought Tokyo's cumulative total to 41,811.

By age group, the highest number of cases were people in their 20s (125), followed by 81 in their 30s, 75 in their 40s and 62 in their 50s.

The number of infected people hospitalized with severe symptoms in Tokyo is 59, down down three from Tuesday, health officials said.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 2,434. After Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Osaka (427), Aichi (219), Kanagawa (214), Hokkaido (176), Saitama (150), Hyogo (123), Chiba (76), Shizuoka (58), Okinawa (47), Ibaraki (44), Gunma (44) and Fukuoka (42).

Thirty-two deaths were reported.

yes

adding no social life cos I have small kid and I am raising the child by myself. So just work, hoikuen and shopping and taking walk in the remote park.

despite the 3hours on the train daily and rotating biggest town. Meeting with more than 200people daily during work day. Following rules like: no physical contacts, no borrowing ballpens etc. keeping distance. Ventilation all the time.

so far so good so yes I do believe it's enough. I do not vaccine even flu. Never had it nor my kid. So yes, I'll pass, I won't be a guinea pig for free. Sorry.

it's strange that people screaming here: no deaths, low cases etc. are so eager to get vaccination. Why? Hypocrisy at it's finest.

It is shocking that there is still no heads off given the situation that the country is still suffering from the pandemic since the first case was rediscovered in Europe November last year. How many smart people have to die before the stupid heads are cut ?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Not very many. The US has 200,000 a day.

So... What are the implication of testing positive if say you live in Tokyo...? Contact tracing? Mandatory isolation? Hospitalization?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Immediate, shut down is a must.

Nineteen deaths were reported

At least 32 deaths were reported at 10pm

Osaka 400+ today too.

That statement is after the nationwide data, so I'm guessing that the 19 deaths are nationwide, and not just Tokyo. Does anybody know???

It is the national total

35% !!

The positivity rate based on actual tests performed does not concern me as much as the fact that 500 known cases a day is steady and expected. Considering how hard it is to get tested here the percentage of positive is not shocking.

I spoke to my friend who is a doctor and he has mixed feelings on the vaccine due to the mRNA. From what he says, a lot of MDs are going to wait a bit for the vaccine. He’s definitely not an anti vaxer (neither am I).

I want 2020 to end but I think we are in for some rough times ahead. What a year!!

It also seems like the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is being evaluated on its ability to stop people developing symptoms. As Raw Beer points out however, this is not the same as stopping vaccinated people potentially infecting others.

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55040635

If vaccination is not sufficient proof that someone is not infected and cannot infect others, I don't suppose it can be used as a criterion for allowing someone across a border, for example. All it means is that they are unlikely to develop serious symptoms.

Viruses gonna virus. They are the real OGs. Silent, efficient, and fo real yo.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I wish stories would tell us who these infected cases are. Not their names, but where they got infected. For example, were workers living in a dorm, members of a sports club, one of the groups partying on yakatabune that I have seen sailing along the river past my place every night for the past two weeks.

Some local authorities report data on tracing, fot example my city. Most infections appear to family transmission here.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

The upcoming vaccine will be for a RNA virus of the coronavirus family. So, it means that it will not be really efficient and would only reduce your chances to catch it initially but would probably be useless after a few months.

That is nonsense, what do you think the Yellow Fever Virus is? and how come the vaccine has remained basically the same for 40 years without becoming useless?

The flu vaccine is different because influenza virus has lots and lots of serotypes in existence, SARS-CoV-2 only has one, so the immunity developed for someone on december last year still can neutralize a virus isolated today in any country of the world. No need for any kind of "tailoring"

The part of vaccinated people having some variant more dangerous is also nonsense, one because that is not what is observed, and second because anybody naturally infected would have the same chances of having a "new version" of the virus, the escape variant production mechanisms are the same no matter how you got the immunity.

That is unknown.

@ClippetyClop Yeah, actually masks for sick people, washing your hands after touching shared objects or door handles will be more effective than the vaccine because it'll be effective for the strand of the vaccine but also for all the other strands that will not be covered by the vaccine.

@garth The upcoming vaccine will be for a RNA virus of the coronavirus family. So, it means that it will not be really efficient and would only reduce your chances to catch it initially but would probably be useless after a few months. That's why they give the flu vaccine every year before the flu season. The only reason to take that is that you want to reduce your risk of catching it because you are at risk and also to reduce the rush of people in the hospitals if your region is badly affected. But then... the vaccine needs to be tailored to your region or it will target the main version of the virus mostly present at the production of the vaccine. So yes, Garth would still need to be careful around people.... but not with people who would have not taken the vaccine because only the people who took the vaccine and fall sick would have a new version of the virus dangerous for garth.

garth,

Then until you get your adequate antibodies, you should stay away from everyone, including the vaccinated:

I agree.

garth,

Then until you get your adequate antibodies, you should stay away from everyone, including the vaccinated:

Research has shown that the biotech firm’s shot is effective at preventing people from getting sick with COVID-19, but there’s no hard evidence that it stops them from carrying the virus “transiently” and potentially infecting others who haven’t been vaccinated, according to Dr. Tal Zaks, Moderna’s chief medical officer.

i don't get you. if you get vaccine then you have nothing to fear right.

I want them to keep well away from me until I've had the chance to get the vaccine and for it to kick in. Two shots several weeks apart, then another couple of weeks until adequate antibody production.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Since wearing mask and washing hands is the best protection I'll stick with that.

Do you think those measures are more effective than a vaccine?

3 ( +5 / -2 )

One of these days we’ll reach a 70% positive rate and only then will the government acknowledge their failure.

At which point Suga will say a captain can’t abandon their sinking ship and that he will work towards fixing things.

Never understood that excuse politicians and CEOs use in Japan all the time. If you’re bad at your job, you have to be kicked out of office and possibly prosecuted if your actions broke the law.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

not surprised at all. Playing with the numbers of the tests again. 500 from almost 10000. now 500 from 1500...yeah playing so hard.

garth

i don't get you. if you get vaccine then you have nothing to fear right. Or you are saying you may get it even is you do vaccination? What is the point in getting it in first place.

i am pro vaccination but in this particular case I'm going to pass. Since wearing mask and washing hands is the best protection I'll stick with that. After it's safe to believe that no side effects are happening, then I will consider getting it.

Vaccine in Japan quiet while off, I’d say at earliest Q2 2021, but Q3 more likely as JP government requested separate phase 1 and 2 studies to be conducted in Japan.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I am a pro Vaxer, so as soon as it is available, I want to take it.

Me too.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

And for all those that are anti vaccine its simple just don't take it but please keep your opinion to yourself.

And I want such people to keep well away from me.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Everyone is waiting for the vaccine, but more and more people are getting suspicious if the vaccine is safe.

Is any contact tracing done in Japan?

I suppose the only figure in this story (if it can be called good) is that the number of cases requiring hospitalization dropped from the day before.

I like pro's too. Full Monty!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

What a leap up!

Wow!

What can the numbers be in the whole of the Tokyo popular then?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

@Fiddler

Only solution is a vaccine and without one this will just drag on forever

I agree!

I am a pro Vaxer, so as soon as it is available, I want to take it.

35% positive rate is VERY high.

I agree. That stat actually shocked me

Only solution is a vaccine and without one this will just drag on forever so lets hope the Japanese govenment approves it soon. And for all those that are anti vaccine its simple just don't take it but please keep your opinion to yourself.

35% positive rate is VERY high.

UK has just rushed through approval of the Pfizer vaccine, with injections to start in a few days. Hopefully Japan will approve the vaccines within this week.
