Why not focus on the number of deaths?

Because deaths are a lagging indicator. Infections are a leading indicator and offer insight into the trend and therefore give a window of opportunity to take action.

I'm not weighing in to defend the media, just pointing out the number of infections is a more useful statistic.

And just yesterday it was reported that 4 volunteers for the Pfizer vaccine developed Bell's Palsy.

And several will get cancer, more will have a heart attack or stroke, others will suffer some other fate. As Zoroto points out, this does not necessarily mean it was caused by the vaccine.

Why not focus on the number of deaths? That will give greater perspective and create less panic. But that would hardly serve the interest of a media outlet would it?

Once again, the lack of tests, esp. post-mortem ones, makes us unable to use the death count as a solid indicator.

It is impossible to trust the numbers we are fed.

what does show the true picture is the near panic in Suga and Koike’s eyes, the total cluelessness and selfishness of them to take any decision or action.

Goodlucktoyou - If staying in one room your extended family should not have been charged more than $5000. The only way it would have cost the 4 of them over $8000 would be to have used 3 rooms (or the kids being older than 18 and using two rooms). Although I'm totally against paying for that at any cost anyway.

I've heard they're at full occupancy over the summer so anyone planning to go back soon might have to hold off for a while.

It is going to be a long winter. I may need to evacuate! Maybe NZ.

Good luck!

my cousin, husband and two children were put in forced two week quarantine. No hotel choice. The NZ govt charge was over NZ$8000. Not covered by travel insurance...

What's the big problem? On Tuesday, New York City had more than 4,000 new cases. Tokyo is doing pretty good.

The problem is many people reading this story are far more concerned with the upward trend of vthe virus in Japan and NOT interested in New York.

The CEO of Pfizer - itself a subject of lawsuits - is on record offering no guarantees for his vaccine.

The goal is to achieve herd immunity thru vaccination, not natural infection

“To all those who still believe in herd-immunity, this might be an interesting / educating read:”

We are going to have to learn to live with this virus, like all the others out there which we are not panicking about.

In spite of the rise in serious cases I see more persons in my neighborhood recently not wearing masks. I wonder if people are just giving up.

I've noticed the opposite in the last few weeks; more people are wearing masks, even outdoors when they aren't in close contact with others.

Still the odd city idiot without a mask who smears through a conbini, but I think the locals are doing a pretty good job.

600, with a warm smile i welcome that tokyo is still capable to stifle the spread of this insidious virus. i once again stand to attention, and salute the efforts of the medical staff and doctors battling this virus every day here.
