Oooo Sunday numbers, 710 has got to be at least half of all those tested. Cant wait for the next round of meaningless urging to commence.

-5 ( +11 / -16 )

Better get those athletes as soon as possible vaccinated over medical workers, old aged and health issued people.

-16 ( +7 / -23 )

"So the real figures are over 7000, at least."

any proof to back up that statement?

-20 ( +10 / -30 )

And still, 99.9% of all cases make recoveries other than those who already have life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, extreme obesity, immune system failure, severe diabetes, serious respiratory diseases, and of course the very elderly with serious health problems health.

-28 ( +9 / -37 )

SHUT. IT. ALL DOWN. And now that vaccines are seen to be not 100% effective let's obsess over that also,. start publishing numbers of previously vaccinated people who got infected. The public needs the truth.

-22 ( +8 / -30 )

711 new cases out of about 1900 tests. Indeed, almost 50% of Sunday's tests results were positives.

No surprise that they refused to announce the number of tests performed this time. Would ruin the image of Olympic perfection in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Osaka did about 12,000 tests on the same day.

This behavior is getting beyond unbearable. There seems to be no logical thinking happening whatsoever among the leadership.

22 ( +30 / -8 )

It is actually 98.97 that recover according to WHO for the Japanese.

-20 ( +7 / -27 )

Ah, but Zoroto, you dispute the case number, so how can you justify your death percentage?

-8 ( +6 / -14 )

Can't have it both ways mate.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

Shut it down, lock em up, close the bars, schools, restraunts...and give the Japanese some more free money! If Japan is TRUELY the 3rd worlds largest economy they should be able to give ¥120,000 to each person, including babies, and Children! My suggestion is to cut the "LDP's" pay and give it to the needy!

13 ( +20 / -7 )

Why has Japan not gone into lockdown?

Initiate lockdown, vaccinate and then slowly open up again... it's working here in the UK

17 ( +24 / -7 )

@Thunderbird: A law does not exist to impose lockdown in Japan.

I would dispute that a full lockdown works - it most definitely did not work in the UK. Appalling infection and death rate. Vaccination is clearly the only way out.

-10 ( +7 / -17 )

The vaccine rollout is beyond criminal - I totally agree. Zero argument there. I am of the opinion that its unlikely that AZ will even get approval here now after the bad press elsewhere and Suga personally requesting more supply from Pfizer.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Why has Japan not gone into lockdown?

because unlike other countries, like Australia, this government doesn’t hand out endless piles of money.

So if we can’t work, we can’t eat, can’t survive.

so enough of the foolish lockdown talk.

-14 ( +8 / -22 )

Not in the way that the UK and other countries imposed it. You are incorrect Zoroto.

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

With the bureaucracy here can you honestly see is having to download an app (that works) to get permission to journey more than 5km from our place of residence with good reason AND the Police enforcing it? Can you really see us getting to the point here where ONLY Supermarkets and Pharmacies will be open. I think not.

0 ( +8 / -8 )

If they cannot arrest people of fine then, than its just another law (like paying for NHK money) that means nothing. Bars and Restaurants of a big enough size will be happy to pull the blinds down and risk paying 200,000 if their daily profit is exceeding that. As for a curfew....I am pretty sure that is not in anyway shape or form legal in Japan.

-2 ( +6 / -8 )

Well - one thing is for sure, you don't live in Central Tokyo.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

50% of the Restaurants in my Ku are most certainly not complying. And if you know when you realistically think we will get a vaccination then all your posts sound just great.

-10 ( +5 / -15 )

I can't help wondering why the nnumber of tests conducted isn't being reported in this article?

It usually is - what's changed?

16 ( +16 / -0 )

@klausdorf: if you want your lockdown, then ALL of us will need financial support. Vaccination for the masses is months away.

3 ( +11 / -8 )

Getting out of hand again! Now the authorities are back discussing the only strategy that seems to work in Japan...let’s do less testing!

21 ( +22 / -1 )

If the Government want to make me stay home and pay me 80% of my income and guarantee my job will be here at the end of it, then great, go ahead with your lockdown.

I cannot work from home. Period.

1 ( +11 / -10 )

We have to rightly agree with @theResident. This Zoro guy seems so off on so many stats and opinions are just his thoughts, and that is ok, but none of them follow the science. It actually seems like he does not live here.

But everyone has a right to an opinion. However we agree much more with what @theResident is putting forward.

-16 ( +4 / -20 )

I live in Arakawa in Tokyo. During the SOE, the streets were pretty much deserted. The only place you would see people was at The big park because it was outside and everyone was masked up.

I feel sympathy for those that need to work. I am lucky that I can pretty much work from home (for now anyway). But I think that public health must take priority.

Until the vaccine can get rolled out (September at the absolute earliest), I think a lock down is the only way to get this under control before we hit the exponential part of the curve. I think a 2 week lock-down is the only way we get this under control.

And I agree that the slow roll-out is bordering on criminal negligence.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

I went for a walk at about 9 p.m. last night in Tokyo and I passed a park in which there were several groups of young people (mostly men) drinking alcohol that they most likely bought from convenience stories or vending machines. No doubt this is a familiar scene all over Japan. So it is unlikely that closing bars at 8 p.m. will have much effect, unfortunately.

16 ( +16 / -0 )

"Of course, some will flaunt the rules. But at least 99% of Japanese population will follow every rule to a tee. That, combined with vaccinations, should be sufficient to stop the pandemic."

lol....follow the rules to a tee?

I was working in Shibuya last week and all the Japanese people who were in the bars and restaurants simply went outside and hung out on the sidewalks and drank and partied, some maskless. Police were everywhere too. Nobody said anything.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

LOL...and I just saw Suga swanning around the back from his trip. What happened to Quarantine?

Oh...rules for some but not for others. Japan has no idea what it's doing.

15 ( +16 / -1 )

Stop all alcohol sales at stores early maybe 800 to 900PM.

Illegel in Hawaii to sell at stores midnight.

@MoriNana

Today 04:32 pm JST

"So the real figures are over 7000, at least."

any proof to back up that statement?

No, they evidently just conjure up hysterical figures that are convenient to the cynicism they espouse. The true number is probably around 711; they multiply it. And through the magical power of up-votes and down-votes, they conspire to create a new "consensus" of facts.

-13 ( +4 / -17 )

No, they evidently just conjure up hysterical figures that are convenient to the cynicism they espouse.

Let’s not devalue the use of ‘hysterical’.

This is not on the same planet as our residents of the burning pet shop screaming from their cages about vaccines.

That lot are ‘hysterical’.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Stop all alcohol sales at stores early maybe 800 to 900PM.

that measure would kill me faster than the virus.

can't live in this non-sense with no booze

11 ( +12 / -1 )

I just want to know how they are going to hold a safe Olympics when there is a SOE and hospitals may be full and people denied testing and dying at home like last time, And how will other countries justify attending such an event in the circumstances. Will the foreign dignitaries guests take some time off from the events to do goodwill visits at the hospitals

7 ( +8 / -1 )

And of course you forgot to mention the UK variant which brought into Japan from a foreigner.

Very few foreigners have been able to enter Japan once the lockdown started; however, Japanese citizens have been allowed to return with very little tracing or testing.

Most likely a Japanese citizen returned home carrying the infection with them and spread it to the rest of the population like the original Wuhan strain.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Post the number of tests already.

@theResident

If the Government want to make me stay home and pay me 80% of my income and guarantee my job will be here at the end of it, then great, go ahead with your lockdown.

I cannot work from home. Period. If the country is in the middle of a pandemic not only will the government make you stay home, the concern general public will with the same concerns for human survival, if life depended on it. Nothing is guaranteed you want 80% of your salary. What good is your salary if you are laid up on your back like a dying cock roach. You want your job guaranteed if no one is working period what good is your job when human survival is at risk. I can imagine you going to the train station waiting for the train to come LOL!!! Reminds of the old Charlie Brown Halloween where he is waiting for the Great Pumpkin!! NOTHING IS GUARANTEED not even the next day!!

human survival is at risk

A bit of overreaction don’t you feel !?

We are nowhere near the Spanish flu numbers, & civilisation survived that

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@kaimycahl: Now that is a hysterical response. With a 99% chance of survival (or better), I think 'human survival' is going a little over the top, However bad things have been.

Well, this is what they've done elsewhere in the world, but it ain't happening here matey boy, so I'll take my chances.

You sit there working from home without a care. Good luck to you.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

@theResident

711 cases today. Yesterday it was 400 something, wasn't it? The panic is simply not in proportion to the reality. When they come at you with asinine retorts such as "on your back like a dying cock roach", I am inclined to side with your going to work, providing for yourself and your family as being a much more level-headed response the the circumstances; arguably much more admirable than to fret over the over-inflated non-issue of what's been labled the "plandemic". One must also keep in mind that these posters do not wish you well. They would delight in a lockdown or government measure that sees you lose your job or a significant portion of your income.

I can't help wondering why the number of tests conducted isn't being reported in this article?

It's very odd. I've checked a few sites with stats now, and none of them show the number of tests done in Tokyo, and none of them correlates with the info on this article either - not even the one that's directly linked to it. Confusing. And also dodgy.

JT writers - if the number isn't available, maybe you should say so in the article? Or whatever reason it is that the test numbers are not suddenly reported.

NOTHING IS GUARANTEED! Not even your salary!! If you report to work tomorrow and your company told you that you are no longer needed. What will you do? Is that too a bit overreaction? Or do you go jump in front of a train? No, you use what ever survival instincts you MAY HAVE!!

@theResidentToday

I never worked from home, and never had I have to worry about a guaranteed salary! THE WORD PANDEMIC produces hysterics so what wrong with a hypothetical response. I think in the real world WORST CASE CONDITIONS, not sugar coating it all. Keep working and remember WEARING IS CARING

Glad you personally didn’t label it like this. Sensible people switch off when they read ‘plandemic’. Pure moronism. This word comes up with hysterical conspiracy theorists/anti-vaxxers. This delirious, paranoid and spineless lot see walls closing in around them everywhere. Useless people.

For Tokyo, I don’t think stricter measures are justified at this point. Keep an eye on the hospitalizations. This should be the metric.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@Vinke, @Derek Grebe

I noted above....the total number of tests was 1941.

So 711 cases out of 1941 tests, a positivity rate of 36.6%.

Japanese Twitter has been all over the shameful test numbers here in Tokyo, as well as how it "strangely" wasn't reported. It makes sense to me. I don't doubt they hoped people would not look into it. Almost 50% of the too few tests conducted coming back positive sure is incriminating for the place meant to safely hold the Olympics.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Should ask the question why is japan so far behind rolling out the vaccine? Are they more worried about the Olympics then The Japanese citizens?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Skipp, thanks! Agree with what you said. That sure is an awful number... in every way. But where did you find it - what’s the source/link?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

But where did you find it - what’s the source/link?

Good question. The only thing I found was that : https://www.fukushihoken.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/hodo/saishin/corona1950.html

So 6054 tests for the 17th. But now seems they acknowledge that the 3 days delay was not so accurate.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

My salary was up and down like a yo-yo and I could see no other way to earn money than to get out of Japan

The upside is that I will be fully vaccinated in June.

If all is well I will be able to enjoy the hot Japanese summer in July and August.
