After following testing numbers recently and noticing discrepencies about numbers, timings, etc I found the following.

Although today's test numbers are 1,939 but this doesn't mean 37% positive rate because it seems the testing numbers are changed serveral days later! From https://stopcovid19.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/en/cards/number-of-tested/

E.g, tests at medical institutions published 17th May -

May 14 - 9493 (+ 3383 !) May 13 - 8952 (+ 467) May 12 - 9609 (+ 374)

Tests at medical institutions published 16th May -

May 14 - 6110 May 13 - 8485 May 12 - 9235

Basically the testing number initially given is 'preliminary' The positive cases given today are then not only from 16th testing data but carried fwd from positive cases found from previous days late testing additions. This explains why 7-day moving average is used as the data is changing several times during the period.

The heat and humidity will see cases fall.

In Tokyo and other big cities where people don’t feel the effects of natural weather then not so much.

-22 ( +4 / -26 )

Well it’s back up again. This is why I don’t understand Tokyo and Osaka being so confident when the numbers go down for a single day.

Thats great and all, but we have to look at averages over time not just a single day.

At any rate, Osaka has the highest number of dead and now people in their 20s to 30s are being found dead their homes. What does it matter if it’s up or down?

People are dying.

23 ( +25 / -2 )

SOE clearly working.

-24 ( +3 / -27 )

I had two tests last week, but my prefecture didn’t register them. It was very hard to get my negative documents.i wonder how they get results?

15 ( +17 / -2 )

That celebration was short-lived @ NipponGlory

May 17 4:21pm Tokyo reports 419 new cases -“ i am very happy to see this drop! go go everyone! We’re beating covid :) “ -

The figures are decided internally by the J government to suit their olympic agenda.

14 ( +16 / -2 )

Yesterday’s numbers were from the weekend when testing was rare. Wait till we get late in the week and the numbers really get going.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Masks also working.

-18 ( +0 / -18 )

Wouldn’t you consider it a problem, if in a highly developed nation, even one person dies in their home after being denied access to a hospital?

15 ( +15 / -0 )

Did we read that right, 204 death?. Admire the honesty if so!

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Total lock down must be taken seriously.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Got it Zoroto, source for us if you provide us with a link would be hugely appreciated! (It is not that you are not believed)

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

Hey, is it just me or did JT change their way of reporting the COVID numbers? Weekly averages, a link to the data source. If this is in any way a response to the comments here, then I have to say, thanks for listening.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

On a more personal note, our building manager came down with COVID this weekend, so the virus is literally at our doorstep. Let's hope the vaccination efforts get ramped up.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

You accuse @Zoroto of being a conspiracy theorist. I don't see any evidence for this. The Japanese Gov has been under-reporting infection rates by testing less and then saying the numbers are going down, when in fact the numbers are going up. As for the covid-19 deaths, they are very hard to quantify if the tests are not being done.

I think we all want to see the numbers go down. It's just that we want to see the real numbers go down. This will happen after vaccinations are carried out on a large scale, but SOE will not be enough.

How do you read the graph with the number of reported death? Upward or downward? Just curious.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

The heat and humidity will see cases fall.

In Tokyo and other big cities where people don’t feel the effects of natural weather then not so much.

Right! That’s why hot and humid India and the Philippines are doing so well with Covid. Oh, wait...

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Zoroto claims deaths are ten times the reported amounts in Japan, there is no evidence of the government doing this

Deaths remain stable, should fall shortly. No doubt mostly elderly frail people who possibly met loved ones in Golden Week which would have been of their own free will. As I stated before for non seniors, those who are not obese, the dangers are minuscule Those frail and with problems should be allowed to isolate if they wish until Covid passes or they become more confident.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

Oh, and let’s not forget the fantastic situation that hot and humid Brazil is in! Yes, the summer weather will surely have a positive impact on Covid cases here. (sarcasm)

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Stable? Probably, we don't speak about the same graph. If you follow the link at the bottom of the article, you land on a page with a series of nationwide and Tokyo data. There is a graph called Deaths. If you look at the 7-day average, it jumped 3-4 folds in four weeks.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

jumped yes, but stable at present. Current measures are designed to cause stability and reduction of cases and deaths and are working. A crisis such as in India shall not occur.

-15 ( +1 / -16 )

Cases, cases. Can we see if actual deaths are increasing, and not just Corona deaths but total deaths? If total deaths remain stable, we are talking about a classification issue.

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

They should have ramped up the vaccination while people are still following the government “urges”. It’s too late now. People don’t care anymore.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Looks like the results of a Golden Week will turn in "Platinum" numbers!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

I think people in Osaka are starting to stop caring. Fewer people wearing masks, the bar next to my building even just started doing business again. People are sick of the overblown panicking

As someone who lives in Osaka, I think the people are sick of bureaucratic ineptitude at every level of society. People in Osaka are getting sick and dying at a rate greater than anywhere else in Japan. A lot of us are sick of uninformed blowhards telling us everything is OK.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Those frail and with problems should be allowed to isolate if they wish until Covid passes or they become more confident.

What ? say again ... What ?

Nobody should be allowed of anything, who are you to even start thinking of allowing people to stay home to avoid infection and, I guess, refusing it to other ?

So to sum up what you said since going with this id : you and your spouse got the virus and were fine thus consider mambo, SOE, partition, mask, ... a bother since you consider you are fine and you will not catch it again so everybody should stop taking any measure to limit the spread because it is troublesome for you. But, thanks to your marvelous mansuetude you are willing to allow people with health problem to not have to meddle in close contact with everybody else if they do not want to. (I will not comment about the reduction of the people granted freedom of no-infection by your highness from mambo to soe).

What part of the hospital are being overwhelmed do you not understand ? The same place you praise for not having partition and the same people you are grateful to see maskless could be playing a role in creating that situation.

People dying at home ? It is ok as long as you can share a plate with your spouse.

Medical staff overworked ? That could be worse, your spouse could not be able to go to coffee shop.

Medical care for cancer&co being postponed due to lack of staff ? But it is s nice to see people enjoying their time maskless.

And so on

Nota bene

Zoroto claims deaths are ten times the reported amounts in Japan

More exactly, he believe a study stating it thus use it as evidence. You were unable to even found a bit of a scientifically valid objection to that study as far as I remember. So if you can dismiss the study out of guts feeling, I do not see what give you any legitimacy to go against someone else guts feeling never the less a study.

Total lock down must be taken seriously.

There is no total lockdown in Japan. Never was. There's only a SoE, which still doesn't really affect the standard Taro except that he can't drink alcohol at restaurants etc. right now.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

wow these are good low numbers!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@ flute

Thank you for your voice of reason.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

These SOEs are not worth the ink for the rubber stamps that go on them. Car numbers have not dropped despite more restrictions.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Active cases dropped by over 2000 yesterday with recoveries significantly outpacing new cases. Vaccinations up to 6.6M now and climbing.

The combination of warmer weather and an accelerated vaccination program will mean this is the last COVID wave of any significance that Japan will see, and my guess it has peaked.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

So, we should just sit indoors and live in fear? No thanks, I take precautions to stay safe and keep others safe. My partner and I had covid last year, doubt we I’ll have again.

People are dying.

How many are actually dying? The all we hear about is "cases", which means nothing.
