Do these figures include people being tested at private clinics? Do these clinics report their figures to the government?

PCR home testing kits are even being sold at Costco now for 6000yen. Are these results being reported?

The latest theory on Viruses suggests that they change the Species, so by contacting it, or having a milder form injected into you, will reorganize your DNA and bring about the next evolutionary change in Man Kind.

Great news that the virus appears to have peaked, at least for this cycle. But that won't stop the usual alarmists wanting to cancel everything, including the Olympics.

We can’t really compare Australia and Japan. Anyway numbers are numbers, indeed the drop is surprising considering train, low remote work and mall being quite packed. One possibility is that they did reduce contact tracing testing, we see less case but there are more serious case and the situation in hospitals is still serious. Hence the reason why government is announcing they will postpone the SOE until 7th March. At least this kill the conspiracy about SOE bing lifted in time to get an army of Chinese tourist in Japan to enjoy new year.

During this week, the number of hospitalized patients, in Tokyo Prefecture. It has remained stable at 2800 people.

That means that the pandemic situation in Tokyo. It has entered what is known as a "plateau situation".

It is a rather delicate situation. On the one hand. The escalation of new hospital admissions has slowed down. But on the other hand. Hospital occupancy is so high. That a sudden increase in the number of infected people would lead to a saturation of the health system.

The good news is that the 7-day AI, as well as the 14-day AI. They have been reduced by 40%. This will result in fewer hospital admissions for Covid in the next 15 days. Thus, the beginning of a downward trend in the infection curve.

We must be patient. But everything seems to indicate that the situation will start to improve soon. Although that if. Very slowly.

A lot of people including people who comment

here aren't up to date on the news I see...

More likely than not the SOE will be extended until the 7th of March.

The reality is the Japanese government has handled the pandemics better than all the rest of the G7 nations. Pity that people don't give her credit for that.

She can do better if she imposes draconian measures with no regards to individual's right and privacy as some countries.

@Redbear: your high "Mindo" as in, after a year still not having figured out how to improve the medical system for the COVID pandemic? Your mindo of blaming other countries (even other countries' nationalism (so ironic!)) for not having the vaccine on time? Your mindo as is "coming together as Japanese people" to blame every bad thing that happens on foreigners? Or speaking the English language? Your mindo as in the as always slow responses for every disaster that hits this country? The mindo of forever having old bureaucratic men in power, who are unwilling to change faulty systems and prioritize the economy and big companies, rather than the citizens themselves? Or prioritize an equal society for LGBTQ and women? Your mindo meaning Japanese people ignoring af the SOE guidelines and going onto packed trains, workspaces and karaoke places?

Japanese people have always been very good in suggesting you're very special, but you're just human, and Japan is a lovely beautiful country, too bad the government is corrupt and the people are ignorant and overly nationalistic.

It would be beautiful if you - Japanese people - start to be a bit more humble: other countries and tourists are already appreciating visiting this country, you know, it wouldn't be that hard to put your own pride aside and appreciate other countries too. You know, your failed government and legislative system have only been around for a few decades, wouldn't defend it and your Mindo too much if I were you.

I am not hearing other countries who are doing much better than you like Australia and New Zealand (basically no COVID since Sept. last year) shout nationalistic ignorant phrases like "our spirit as a people" and "Our mindo" and "our Unity" as much as you hear Japanese shouting this, even when it has been shown over and over again that your country has less testing that any other developed country, and your health care system has collapsed. Now Kono is even blaming the EU's nationalism for the vaccine shortage in Japan, can you believe it?

Show a little dignity and be a little humble, and you will probably improve your otherwise beautiful country by a million. Everyone wishes Japan will do well during the Pandemic, like every other nation on Earth, but don't make everything about your superior being-nonsense. It's getting old.

J-Gov: no one believes these numbers.

The Japanese people believe the numbers. TVs show how shibuya scramble square and around major stations have fewer people in this SOE than previously to convey the message that reduction in people has helped to stem the increase in infection rate, of course there is no mention that the trains are still packed like sardine, J-TV is the most distrustful.

Chuo line from Shinjuku is noticeably quieter on my "rush hour" journey home. It has been since May last year.

Restaurants seem to be quieter from looking in windows as I pass by (wearing a mask I might add). Reports from others is that they are quieter and people are wearing masks when not eating, not lingering, not talking so much etc

It seems that the majority of Tokyoites are being well behaved in public regards the virus which could be having an impact.

Can't see how or why the government would lie about numbers.

No ambulances zooming by me yesterday and today. All restaurants closing at 8, and last beers at 7:30. Malls have a bit more people than they should. Almost everyone has a mask on except for some troubled individuals talking to themselves, or just not altogether. Trains very empty during the day.

You are witnessing a nation, and a people coming to together as a people and as a nation in the time of crisis. It not a mask or vaccine that will defeat Covid. It will be the unity of the Japanese nation. Our mindo. Our spirit as a people.

Wish the Japan bashing panic posting would stop, especially since we are a year into this.

Elvis is correct in my opinion. I really agree with his last sentence.

We are doing well.

Anyone remember about a month ago the country was going to fall off the face of the earth into zombie apocalypse?

I think this was during your 'Walls closing in' period of immense self-deception so what you remember from that weird few weeks is also the guess of anyone, anyone?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

nobody says the gov is lying.

You're wrong. Lots of people who commented above you think the govt is lying. It's a conspiracy to host the Olympics. Ergo, quite a few conspiracy theorists are saying the gov is lying.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

How dare this pandemic start to die off.

I'm not done losing my mind yet!

Anyone remember about a month ago the country was going to fall off the face of the earth into zombie apocalypse? Remember the hospitals would be razed to the ground with a catastrophic number of patients?

Dogs and cats living together in sin...

Remember that?

'bout a month ago...

Anyone?....

Anyone?.....

I observed one of the swimming indoors pool and it was crowded where is the SOE??

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Could you please elaborate?

I was just teasing you. You do fine work here, don't take the joke wrong.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

@AG

Trains incredibly packed during the week,

Restaurants full, with no limitation of capacity, and with queues outside waiting to get in

Are you living in Kanto ?

If you are, we are not living in the same world.

A few restaurants might be busy on weekends. otherwise trains and restaurants have been much quieter , no doubt about it.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I can see that the restaurant I’m at right now has 3 customers and right now is Japanese rush to go eat 5 pm. Feel safe eating some goods. I can see also why the eatery is taking a hit and going bankruptcy

6 ( +6 / -0 )

I can. It's one word, 8 letters, and starts with 'O'. Can you guess?

'Optimism'?

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Numbers right on track to end the SOE right on time as Suga promised. I wonder how Japan defeats the virus so easily each so called wave, when so little is done to stop it. It truly is amazing. . Manipulation of the figures and low testing can be the only reason. So the question is can they manipulate them now for the next 6 months to keep the Olympic dream alive . The more spreadable overseas variants which as reported, are already spreading in the community thanks to the lax quarantine on overseas entry requirements, may have something to say about it. We will see.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

The less testing, the less count so everyone in the World would think it’s safe in Japan and they can hold the Olympics with out any fear of the COVID-19 come on it’s getting closer to that day let’s keep the numbers low...Tokyo Olympics this summer as a symbol of human victory over the pandemic.so Sugan San says

Should be just below 500 by Tues/Wed next week, just in time for announcement of end of the request to "refrain from going home by 8pm" from the 8th. All on schedule before resumption of "go to trouble", following shortly after. Will be great to "get back to normal" for a few months until the next inevitable lockdown.

What are they thinking ?

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Can't see how or why the government would lie about numbers.

nobody says the gov is lying.

they all say the gov is undertesting.

the undertesting is pretty obvious, there's no doubt they're undertesting.

did i wrote enough times the word undertesting?

PS the gov is undertesting.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

Great news. At this rate it will be in the 10s in time for Feb 7th. Impeccable timing. Thanks Mr Suga, you massive super genius!

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Numbers continuing to fall, which is great news. Some JT posters won't like it though given their constant doom and gloom.

-3 ( +10 / -13 )

Wish the Japan bashing panic posting would stop, especially since we are a year into this.

Being critical on some issues, with justification, is NOT Japan bashing. I guess you hold 80% of Japanese who wish the Olympics to be cancelled or delayed as Japan bashers too?

7 ( +13 / -6 )

The numbers are going down for no reason.

They go down, because the peak of respiratory diseases is usually around end week 4/5

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

The numbers are going down for no reason.

Trains incredibly packed during the week,

Restaurants full, with no limitation of capacity, and with queues outside waiting to get in - saw many today, and queues with no social distancing whatsoever!,

Malls busy, with stores not limiting capacity either,

No remote working for the vast majority.

And so on.

J-Gov: no one believes these numbers.

Make it compulsory to disclose private institutions’ testing results, and ease testing, instead of forcing numbers to go “miraculously” down to increase approval rate and try to go ahead with the Olympics, which by now, everyone knows it simply will not happen.

Its time to stop with the lies and prioritise population’s health.

Approve vaccines ASAP, let and encourage everyone to get tested to disclose clusters and isolate those areas, so everyone can go back to normal life soon, with the economy on full strength.

12 ( +19 / -7 )

Still cant believe they have not ramped up testing to really get this sorted, and show the world its all OK, if they are still hopeful of Olympics. 10,236 tests is basically nothing in a city the size of Tokyo.

The Tokyo Gov't does not inspire confidence.
