The Tokyo metropolitan government on Monday reported 77 new cases of the coronavirus, down 39 from Sunday. The number is the result of 3,506 tests conducted on Sept 4. It is the first time the number has dropped below 100 since Aug 24.

The tally brought Tokyo's cumulative total to 21,849.

The number of infected people with severe symptoms is 24, three down from Sunday, health officials said.

Nationwide, the number of reported cases was 288. After Tokyo, the prefectures with the most cases were Osaka (45), Kanagawa (29), Aichi (21), Okinawa (19), Saitama (14) and Chiba (14).

Five deaths due to coronavirus-related causes were reported.

Was it windy weather that was supposed to make the virus disappear? If so, the south should be good now.

Why do not people catch cold recently?

Because they started washing their hands and don’t sneeze on strangers.

I am sure the lock down loonies and anti Japan posters will still find a way to be negative about this low number. For the people that live, work and make a living in Tokyo this is good news.

That was some useful information Japan today.

Actually provided the number of tests given.

The number of positive results

and number with severe symptoms.

How many are still in the hospital with the virus?

Put a mask on.

Don’t act like spoiled children.

Agree, mitigation measures for covid also helps with other infectious diseases with similar modes of transmission.

So should help with the flu also

It is becoming increasingly clear that, leaving aside such things as co-morbidities and age, the actual amount of the inoculum itself, i.e. the initial viral load, correlates pretty closely with the ultimate severity of the disease. This is known to be true of influenza and the original SARS also, and could even be said to be common sense. Masks, though far from perfect, do reduce to some extent the initial viral load that you might inhale, so their usefulness in certain obvious situations should be beyond dispute. People who refuse to wear them at all are not only doing a disservice to others but also to themselves.

@Reckless.......in this case it was not because of Abe but in spite of Abe.

I normally agree wholeheartedly with you on nearly everything.

It must be said though that Japan either by freak or design has done very well regarding Covid19.

No, the difference is, that here... unlike in the UK, people don't seek to go to Raves, or on International Vacations, and they wear facemasks when in Public.... sometimes even medical gloves....

reckless:

I respect your opinion and all others' opinions. I am not an ideologue and look at the results, especially as compared to the US. Japan has nailed the coronavirus.

Compared to US? Now that really is setting the bar very low. How about comparing Japan with the rest of East Asia, especially testing?

> has done an excellent job

Japanese people, staying at home and washing hands, social distancing did a good job. Abe can’t claim this victory.

3500 tests? Come winter, half Japanese population will have common flu or seasonal influenza. If you have cancer, you will probably have to wait years for test and treatment.

Why do not people catch cold recently? When people have symptoms of cold, they doubt about the corona and rush to hospitals to receive PCR tests. Are we not over reacting?

What's shown across the world is that people with a healthy lifestyle suffer the least from this disease. If you eat healthy, are in good physical shape, get lots of vitamin D (either via sun or supplement) and keep good hygiene, you're generally ok.

Shutting down gyms was the worst part of all of this.

Why should the healthy, yet again, foot the bill for those who don't take care of themselves?

I get the elderly, and people with conditions that cannot be helped. Be cautious of those people, protect them as they have no choice in this matter.

But those who just don't take care of their bodies? That's your responsibility.

Lack of panic coupled with basic hygiene and a bit more mask wearing (?) seems to have worked better than the panic stricken and illogical approach adopted by many other developed nations......

“Because they started washing their hands and don’t sneeze on strangers.”

This part I agree with

Hygiene, yes. The rest no.

Japanese are generally in better health than most

A lot less people wearing masks in Tokyo today. Like when the emergency was lifted.

When masks go out of fashion the numbers will be back in 2 weeks. Let's keep the masks on for 2 months after eliminating the virus.

Masks 100% of your life is not the magical talisman. Wearing masks is mostly cosplay, but knock yourselves out. Avoid closed cramped places, fine. Outdoors? No. Trains: only if super crammed. Restaurants...no. Gyms...heck no if ventilation is good. Have a preexisting condition? Do not go to the gym. Otherwise, make gym masks optional.

Because of the typhoon though, there's been no testing in the last few days in Kyushu...

This is absolutely true ! People who don't wear mask aren't very smart, but it is what it is you need them too to support the vaccine development.

Japan has shown that lockdowns are necessary to bring cases down.

Even if you think japan is under testing you have to admit that hospitals haven't been overwhelmed.

Thankfully even if there is a third wave the chance of further s.o.e has been greatly reduced.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

And yet they want to give out free vaccinations for the virus?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

“@CGlen:I wonder what motives you to be so vocal about your antimask disposition?”

Peter Hitchens.

And a lack of conclusive evidence. Studies have shown sweat clogs the fibres, making them near useless outside in summer.

People look at them as Japan’s saviour, yet other countries that have high mask-wearing rates still seem to have high fatalities.

The US case in point. Health not face coverings, is the key.

What makes you so vocal about being pro-mask?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

“Let's keep the masks on for 2 months after eliminating the virus.”

I’m good thanks.

Good to see more people ditching face coverings, at least while outside

Maybe herd immunity has finally arrived for the virus which has not been as serious as predicted...

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Everything going in the right direction. Active cases have halved from where they were.

Tottori and Shimane are COVID free and other prefectures are in single figures for active cases. Japan has done an excellent job.
