Tokyo Skytree marks 10 years as symbol of capital's skyline

Congrats to Tokyo Skytree! Lovely vistas when the weather allows.

The 'Sorakara Point' at the tippety-top of that sucker has a single, small restroom, at 1,476 feet off the deck.

I don't mean to brag, but I've taken a dump up there.

Looking out over the sprawling concrete mess that is Tokyo must be very depressing.

The only saving grace to that picture is the small patch of green which is probably artificial grass in the stadium.

I took a trip to Tokyo a three years ago. Went to the Skytree but because of mist could only see half of it so no point going up. So I went to the Gibili Museum, but it was closed. The only saving grace for my expensive 2 day trip was the Robot Restaurant. I will stick to Kyoto Tower.

Went up there a few years ago. There were six of us (a family) and the cost was something crazy like 40,000 yen or something. It’s something that you’ll do once in a lifetime and never again. Totally overrated in my opinion.

Tokyo has many green areas, we have to know the city well..

It's definitely not worth the price of admission. You would actually enjoy Tokyo Tower more.

I went there once, saw the price of going up, and said no. You can great views for free at government buildings.

you know many great cities well. When comes time again to visit Tokyo, what is meant by “frikiest” city of the world”? Should we be worry about that?

Do people EVER stop searching for something to needlessly complain about?

I for one find the cyberpunk neon aesthetic of Tokyo incredibly appealing. It was a big part of the reason I moved here. To get to the top of that tower and see nothing but an ocean of human architectural creation is impressive. People BUILT that "concrete mess" you're deriding - much of it over the course of less than a century after what was there before got bombed into oblivion.

Some people like to live in nature. That's fine. I like taking trains, and I have zero interest in driving thirty minutes to get to a supermarket.

Tokyo is a great city that not only excels at what it does, but also offers an incredibly unique experience.

Chicago, London, Paris - I have absolutely no use for such overrated urban nightmares.

Is it still over 3000 yen to go to the top?

It would make a good location for a repeater or two.

Did you know that Tokyo only has 3 repeaters: one on 70 cms and 2 on 23 cms.

I love the aquarium there. It's got the Pokemon Store there which is cute as well. However I would think twice before visiting during a busy weekend/shopping season like Christmas. Even my Japanese spouse had a near panic attack there last winter due to the crowds, because you couldnt fit through doorways with all the people coming and leaving at the same time. Very little crowd control and this is worrisome considering Japan isn't full open to tourists yet..

It'd be nice if the area surrounding Sky Tree could be invested in a little more as well, some of the neighborhoods look literally abandoned. Mainly dilapidated buildings that really ought to be engineered into green spaces or new small businesses wherever possible. But if you look hard there's a few gems like little cafes etc.

Not a very green city, really rather a depressing picture. An indictment of human folly and its destruction of its own environment. Japan does have a penchant for concreting over everything in sight an woe betide that a tree be allowed to grow!

I love the Skytree! Responding to several above...

-No it doesn't cost ¥40,000 for a family of six. ¥16,000 at the most.

-The Skytree was tested well during the 2011 Tohoku quake. Didn't fall down. I wouldn't want to be in it either during a big quake tho.

-Yeah, Tokyo is a concrete jungle, but it's fun. The rest of Japan is super green.

-Sure the view from the Tokyo Metropolitan building is great, but nothing compares to the Skytree, especially on a clear day or when there are big puffy Laputa clouds. It's like being in a stationary airplane.

About 50% of the coastline of Japan is covered in concrete. Not very green at all. Over 90% of all rivers in Japan have concrete riverbanks. How green is that?
