Tokyo Skytree marks first anniversary

Tokyo Skytree on Wednesday marked its first anniversary. As of Monday, the number of visitors to the 634-meter-tall tower had reached 6.34 million, according to operator Tobu Tower Skytree Co.

The area has been celebrating the first anniversary all throughout May with parades, street festivals and various events. The tower itself has been lit up with four patterns featuring 12 color combinations from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. in the evenings, which will last until June 4.

In the first week alone after it opened in 2012, 1.64 million people visited the tower's two observation decks -- 350 meters and 450 meters above ground -- and more than 50 million had visited the surrounding Tokyo Solamachi area so far, according to Tobu Tower Skytree Co. In Golden Week this year, the number of visitors was 1.77 million.

Wonder how the other venues with views have fared with visitor numbers? Tokyo Tower, Tokyo City View (Roppongi Hills), etc.

I hit all four (including Skytree) during my visit last year. Hey, just trying to do my part during a down economy. Even though the exchange rate was pretty brutal then.

When the Tokyo Skytree was first proposed, I had misgivings. I knew it was necessary, for digital broadcasting, but wasn't really excited about it. Then I saw a documentary on the construction. And then I saw it in person. I rather like it now.

And if you take time to get a snack at the cafe, try the Skytree Roll. Usually, any food named after the tourist spot is terrible, but this pastry is actually very good. Of course, it could have been the altitude... ;)

I guess that makes about 4 things to see in Tokyo now.

You are joking, of course! (I hope)

I travelled to Tokyo and went up the skytree this March, the view was just magnificent. It offers a very humbling and different view compared to the Metropolitan Building and Tokyo Tower.

Tokyo, make a note here: huge success!

Seems like just yesterday it opened.

It's open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. so, assuming it's open 365 days a year, that's an average of 17,370 (rounded up by less than one) visitors per day or 1,240 per hour or 21 per minute. Naturally, it's going to be more crowded on holidays and weekends but even so, how are those numbers even possible or enjoyable?

No, Ian Robertson, I am not joking. On a things to see per size basis Tokyo is pretty low on the world-class attractions list. In fact, 4 things might be generous.

Wow how time flies! I've been here just over one year & remember the hype surrounding the opening.

I really wanted to go but heard about how crowded and hard to get tickets would be.

I've been twice now and would go again. The lights display are fantastic and the view from the top breathtaking! :-)

I am sure for many Europeans with cities brimming with things to see it must be pretty disappointing. I'd love to have a list of world-class attractions in Tokyo.

Saw the documentary about Sky Tree and it was pure Japanese ingenuity at work. Building this structure was not possible anywhere else in the World except in Japan. Amazing achievement by amazing country!

Expert civil engineer, are you tokyodoumo? How about all those other cities, say in the US, with tall(er) structures?

@ pasanewa Since you are making the assertion that Tokyo has much to offer then it must be your duty to give some evidence.

For your information, I have spent around 18 years over the course of 26 years in Japan and, even more time in Europe. Do you doubt there are things to see in Europe? Tokyo and its environs has a population of about London and Paris combined. Do you need a list of all the things to see in those two cities?

I haven't seen the view from Tokyo Skytree, but the illumination of Tokyo Skytree is very beautiful. But all the same, I like Tokyo Towe best.
