Heaviest snow in 4 years hits Tokyo

hope everyone has a safe commute back home. i know the trains are gonna be running extra slow today in tokyo because of this weather.

At last, the sputtering sleet has turned to proper snow!! We will all get to go home early today!!

Folk used to warmer climes are strongly advised not to go out unless it's absolutely essential.

Folk from up North, you'll need your big coats and good boots.

just starting here in Kansai, lucky i bought snow tires after a big augment with my partner that we don't need them. if you go out, always put gloves, hat and scarf and those really japanise hot warmer pad thinges in your bag. you never know.

We just got the call from the East Japan head - "go home as soon as you can".

It is the first snow fall this winter in Kanto, so panic is to be expected as its been a year since the last one. When I was at Stalingrad it was much worse. Now I have AC!

The forecast in front of me shows precip in Tokyo for today only, so just stay safe and ride it out.

On the same forecast, it looks like the Sea of Japan side is going to get mega pounded with snow for the whole week. From how far the snow is predicted inland, there is a good chance of the highways in Gunma, South Nagano etc. closing. They don't have anything like the snow clearing equipment they have in the proper snow country. If you go skiing from Kanto in the next day or two, it might be a struggle to get back.

Out in Hachioji it's a pretty decent snowfall. It's been a while since I've seen this much snow here. My daughters preschool bus was 90 minutes behind schedule, though. That was a bummer.

i have to eat my own words. It just took me 2.5 hours to complete a journey out of Tokyo that usually takes Just less than an hour. :-(

Fun to see all the kids making snowballs, etc. Hope they get a snow day tomorrow and can have fun!

Have to fly overseas out of Haneda tomorrow...if equipment makes it in...listening to ATC and Tokyo ground on the radio and sounds like things are operating...but slowly....

Typical Kansai snow--pretty as it falls then it immediately melts. Will probably look pretty atop the mtns. in the morning though.

@Goodlucktoyou - good decision. I always fit and use studless tyres from November to March, with a set of snow chains in the back of the car for use in the mountainous regions. My local car dealer has storage facilities for them (small annual fee), which includes changing and fitting them. Many of the mountain roads have designated laybys for setting and removing the chains.

Was the same place about 6.30 pm, there was a slight delay at Yamanote-sen, but not due to snow, but a technical glitch on a train before. Keihin-Tohoku was running on schedule. My Keiyo-sen also was fine, though it usually first to stop in snow or a strong wind. Kudos to JR, minimum delay.

Yesss, snow! At last we have something like real winter!!

That's a wonderful pic. I love the snow, too, but take care, peeps. Much of Japan gets paralyzed when it snows, and this snow is far heavier than usual. Don't drive if you don't need to, and if you need to go out, use appropriate footwear and bundle up.

Nothing happening in Osaka area. I actually love seeing snow since I am from SoCal and all.

The heaviest snow in four years hit Tokyo on Monday, prompting companies to advise employees to leave work early, disrupting transport and leaving 16 people injured.

But, unfortunately, everybody was advised to leave work at the same time. All the trains gave up on regular schedules and were running as many trains as they could, which is admirable. However, there were so many people at the stations in central Tokyo you had to wait for two or three trains just to get in the door of the cattle car. And, if you think getting on was difficult, getting off was nearly impossible! Nobody was prepared to give up their 30cm2 of space to let you off. My journey included three changes, which were not pretty. I left work 90 minutes early and got home one hour later than usual and, every train was packed worse than cattle. Aaargh!

This evenings injury report of 16 will grow immensely over the next two or three days as the pretty white powder turns into deadly ice. I have my hiking boots and cleats, so i'm ready, but many others do not and will suffer the consequences, sadly. Good luck tomorrow peoples. Get your boots on and tread carefully. Oh, and leave early coz the Tokyo trains will still be running erratic schedules.

5 hours to drive on route 6 from Hitachi to home today was how my 26km commute went. It wasn’t the best way to spend a few hours but I gotta say that I’ve grown to appreciate podcasts an awful lot more than before!

I thoght they would raise prices and demand we use more...

Well, that was a day. Shovelled like I was trying to bury a story about collusion and built a massive snowman, like I was constructing a massive strawman.

Brrr, I feel a lot of minuses coming on.

We were on the rainbow bridge for 5 hours. Reports say 59 cars, failing to mention the 200 trucks and buses. Left Narita Airport at 10:15 arrive Tokyo hotel 4:30 am!
