this must be cheaper for japan than going for cloning.

I don't mid so much that China "rents out" their Pandas if the proceeds are going to support Panda Conservation. But that idea that any Panda born on say US Soil is automatically Chinese property rubs me the wrong way.

They're Chinese because veterinarians try hard to release them in their natural habitat, IN CHINA, some point in their lives.

Ling Ling died in the hot summer of 2007 from overheating and dehydration in the small super hot cell of Ueno zoo. Let us hope the zoo will take better care of the new pandas but I suppose Ueno is a very dangerous habitat for them.

the polar bear in Ueno used to pray for death, now just walks back and forth nonstop totally deranged. has anyone seen it anywhere near the water and floating balls in the last 10 years?

So they replace them with new ones. Does anyone know what they do with the dead pandas?

Good point about the poor state of most Japanese zoos. It's unacceptable that a rich city like Tokyo maintains those poor fellas inside tiny cubicles. But wait, if J-citizens can't afford a decent spacious house, let alone having space for animals. Poor pandas.
