The fact is that the landscape that is most hospitable to the formation of tornados, one that is open and flat, is also perfect for farming.

Thunderstorms can be cool to watch but the potential damaging winds and possible tornadoes are not. Fall and winter can not come soon enough. This heat is really tiring. I'll take the cold dry Siberian winds blowing down into Tokyo in January any day over this crappy, humid, stinky, sweating, human soup of a commute. Who would like a cool refreshing day in the sun around 6c right now.?

>Why have these only been reported in the last 2 years?
It happened many time before in Japan.
Noliving
Yes and no to that, it will eventually get hot enough where a tornado can't form.

The perfect places and most common for tornado occurence in Japan is Tohoku, Saitama, Tochigi and Chiba prefectures and around 2-3 PM. Also Okinawa down on the map Those are conclusions from sciencists conference earlier this year held in Tokyo.

@theinterstat, why don't you come to my neighborhood, so I can personally show you what nothing looks like, but watch yourself with all the debris and folks like me cleaning it up!
LAcajun
Looked like F1 or F2, good thing it wasn't big

Why have these only been reported in the last 2 years? Japan is totally unprepared for Tornado's, lucky no one was killed!

I seen a lot of cellphone videos where people were obviously too close to this thing. It's still rare to see a live tornado in person in Japan. I just wish they would truly learn how to run for safety instead of trying to become an amateur storm chaser.

Lots of comments...no assistance....

I didn't even know Japan could get tornadoes. Now I do.

Why would anyone want to live in a country in which one has a greater chance of experiencing natural disasters? I guess an answer suitable to that question is: Probably for the same reason I'd rather live in Seattle, Washington than the safest place in Colorado.

Man made? Government did say they want to use technology to make it rain.

But it was big enough to rip the roofs off many homes, schools and now a few people are in the hospital, etc..Only will get worse with all of the Global Warming, etc..

hopefully japan has storm chasers I think....

One more reason to buy a storage container and bury it. Stocked with supplies to weather out the tornados, radiation and economic meltdown.

Harashana.
Try 'tornado alley' etc in the USA, etc. :)

Tornados in Japan? What next? Earthquakes in Kansas?

I feel sorry for the locals but does this warrant 15 minutes of prime time NHK news? There are much greater problems out there to cover.
TheInterstat
Whatever. It was nothing.
