A car crashed into a truck carrying 100 pigs at Nasukarasuyama in Tochigi Prefecture on Monday, police said Tuesday.
The accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m., according to Sankei Shimbun. The truck, driven by a 52-year-old man, was hit by the car driven by an 83-year-old man, and turned over onto its side. About 40 pigs escaped, police said.
The pigs were rounded up in a nearby rice paddy about 90 minutes later. Seven pigs died in the truck.
Sankei reported that the accident took place at an intersection where there were no traffic lights.

Pigs are so smart and should not be killed for food.
Then how will I get my bacon for Saturday morning eggs and toast?
I'll stop eating pork when pigs fly!
Maitake
yet another accident caused by someone too old to be driving.
RevHead
These old coots should not have licences, 82 yr old drove straight up the backside of my wife while she was stopped at a traffic light in Tochigi (our home town) and said "Oh i never saw you". Funny thing is the old coot still got his licence as he lives on a farm (like us) so needs to get around, but she now has back and neck problems.

I've got a beef.
Some of the comments here just aren't koshur.

An intersection with no lights. Hmmm... does that mean no stop signs either, I wonder? How do you figure the old geezer caused this, Maitake?
RIP pigs.

Time to call the Angry Birds.

Piggies go forth and make Bacon & Hams. :)

Wow, a truck with 100 pigs makes the top national news headline. Shouldn't this be in the crime section...? "7 porks killed, 40 on the run after violent prison break" :-)
Alan Gibson
Cue "saved his bacon" and other piggy-puns!

"RIP pigs"? LOL, somehow I don´t think they were looking forward to a long life, anyway.
Good luck for the escapees!

The police were all over this case?

Well I'll bet the old man's bacon's in the fire now!

Because the article says the 82 year old hit the truck. "The truck, driven by a 52-year-old man, was hit by the car driven by an 83-year-old man"
That's why I figure it's his fault... plus he's 83, an old geezer...
Yubaru
Like pigs in shit I'll bet.

Wasn't the guy who drove off the road in Hokkaido (to be saved from frostbite from the dog in the car, as well as his granddaughter being saved) also 83? I really question whether these old codgers should be allowed to drive or not. I realize that so long as they pass all the tests it's their right, so it's tough to call, but I don't know...
Anyway, at least a few of the pigs got a short taste of freedom. Pity they didn't get away altogether.
calm down
Lucky bystanders might have actually witnessed pigs flying
nandakandamanda
One to you Maitake.
In the J version they mention that there was a stop/yield sign at the crossroads on the old(er) geezer's side. In this case the charge of 'ageism' against you is dropped. http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20111213-00000096-mailo-l09

The average body fat of a pig is 15 percent.

After 70, these people need to be doing a driving test every year to ensure the safety of the rest of us!! 83?! Unreal - sad sadly, reality in Japan.
amerijap
The truck must have been long enough to carry all 100 pigs. That's quite a lot.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the traffic accident by a senior driver. It’s happening in any country. The DMV should reconsider the driver-license law for them.
uzneko
tmarie - it's a reality in every country that people that old are still driving. My all of my grandparents are still behind the wheel and they are between the ages 85-92. I do agree they should have stricter tests for the elderly, especially involving sight. Using my grandparents as an example, I know one of them is almost legally blind, and yet his license does not even say he has impaired vision. No good. Love the man dearly, but he should not be driving if he can't even tell which grandchild I am from across the room.

Wait until Miss Piggy finds out about this!!!

no traffic lights...how was the signage? was the road paint clear? There are a lot of back roads and old roads that dont get treated.

I'm still waiting for my bacon and eggs!

RIP, seven pigs, may you wound up in some top ramen shops as " Chashui mei "......................

LOL!!! @ calm down

@tmarie
I have no doubt there are a few 90~ old people STILL driving around. WATCH OUT!!
LH10
lol!!! im waiting for my bacon too
cleo
The pigs that escaped .... didn't escape. Poor pigs.
There'd be no rice in the paddy at this time of year, so it's not like they were able to sell themselves dear by trampling/eating a few crops.
BlueWitch
I must agree with cleo...
Why the hell would I laugh and be all happy that some animals are gonna get slaughtered so my family can eat? No, I'm thankful to them (the animals!) that hubby and my children can have their meat side dish. These animals are bred for human consumption, yes, but that's it..I feel zero need to cheer or laugh at their imminent slaughter. Only ridiculous people do that. Neanderthals hunt and ate their meat, but they didn't make a big fuss about, did they?
LH10
look! it's a flying pig!!!! lol!
Elbuda Mexicano
Stupid old geezer should not be driving anymore! Poor boo boos!
cleo
No, it hasn't - the article says they were rounded up, presumably to continue their journey to the slaughter-house. The meat-eaters are happy that they still get to have their bacon and sausages and even make jokes about it.
Poor pigs. Not just the ones in this accident.
cubic
life has been given to 40 pigs that would've been killed - everyone should be happy about this
MaboDofuIsSpicy
Escaped pigs on the lamb for 90 minutes...I mean on the pig for 90 minutes.
I hope they had a wonderful time. Pigs are so smart and should not be killed for food.
