If someone can pay that much for a tuna, then they are surely making way too much yen. Seriously that money could have supported many projects as humanitarian aide to many victims from last years storms. It also means that too many people are eating out supporting this suishi house too. Aside that to real matters, what does one piece of that 193million Yen taste like, well do that math and pay the price of 10,000 Yen to find out.

Flexing, how about using that money for the people out of homes.

He’s not paying for the fish, he’s paying for the publicity.

23 ( +25 / -2 )

This guy does this every year. There's no more "wow" to it, it's just him marketing his chain with an annual headline.

21 ( +22 / -1 )

...and they say business sentiments is depressed.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Obscene.

That’s nearly 2 million bucks for a fish! I reckon I might have to buy a tuna boat.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

The dude who bought it looks to be turning into a fatty tuna himself.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

Déjà vu

I could retire with that amount of money.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I think this is a basically a publicity stunt for the company that bought the fish.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I could buy the equivalent weight of tuna steaks in Waitrose (who are not cheap) for about 1.3 million yen!

Like Random said, this is not the true value of the fish but all about the publicity

must be one h-ll of a tasty tuna . . . (-_-) . . . seriously, publicity or not, this is ridiculous . . .

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

That's more expensive than if it was made of solid 999 silver

I think Kimura's reasoning for these crazy prices over the past few years for the "Beaujolais" of the Tuna season is simply -

1) to Highlight the extreme depletion of stocks

2) to garner support for Bluefins status as an endangered species.

I believe through his carefully planned publicity stunts he hopes to increase awareness of the dire situation.

Some say he's doing it for money and to satisfy the insatiable appetites of the "we love fatty tuna" crowd.

But I disagree. He obviously has the sustainability of the species at heart and at the forefront of his actions.

That amount of money could buy over 38 kilograms of solid 24 karat gold

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

No disrespect to all you tuna lovers...but this is absurd! People literally perishing for their share of daily bread!

Browny1

If I'm right in detecting extreme sarcasm in your comment - I completely agree.

Prices of products should reflect the true environmental costs they are associated with - ie if it causes the endangerment of a species, habitat etc.

And as I say each year when this same headline comes up - this event is in very bad taste with regards inequality & over-fishing.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

ifd66 - Yes - dripping fat sarcasm.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Yeah and justify that price with real value Kiyoshi Kimura, I bet you cannot ! Looking for headlines and wow factor is all, cares nothing for reality !

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Disgusting and selfish.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

For that much money I'd want it alive.

That amount of money could buy over 38 kilograms of solid 24 karat gold

While this sounds implausible, it is actually correct

And interestingly enough, 38 kg of gold is enough to buy one large tuna.

Post 2020 Olympics, please bring back as many goods sellers and restaurants from that awful Toyosu to Tsukiji. We miss you all. Toyosu is for the birds and not many people go there to buy things...oh, and no much is for sale. What a bureaucrats dream but a real person's debacle.

He’s not paying for the fish, he’s paying for the publicity.

Exactly, someone commented that is 2 million dollars. Well, he just bought himself 40% of an average superbowl commercial.

I have never been to Sushizanmai, but now at least I have heard of it and now know its the place of the superbowl tuna. Mission accomplished Mr Kimura.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I went to Sushi Zanmai a few weeks ago for the first time in Osaka. It was excellent and fairly reasonable for a place that pays that crazy amount for a single tuna every year.

The comments here are the real joke.

It’s publicity. Companies pay more for advertising campaigns.

Put it in perspective: people on JT would be less outraged if the guy had bought a gas-guzzling boat instead of a fish.

Oh and great news for everyone, his statue stands right outside the exit so you can get the picture you always dreamed of.

I've said it before, lol, and I'll say it again:

Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

700 Yen per gram ? No wonder slices of Tuna are becoming thinner!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Every year the same PR stunt , cheaper than buying time on Tv.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

People are commenting as if this guy bought the thing for his own personal consumption.

Presumably he will make back at least half the money when he sells slices of the thing to his customers.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

At roughly 3000 USD per US pound, he won't make his money back. As someone else said, he is paying for the publicity and marketing of his restaurants. The guy has a great story though, with his handling of pirates in Somalia.
