If these yankee wanna-be kids had worn a helmet, chances are.......

What's with the "yankee wanna-be" stuff? Judging from what they hit and the damage done, probably the only parts of their bodies not badly injured where their heads inside their full face helmets. That kind of impact isn't survivable, helmet or no helmet. RIP and such sadness for their families.

The question is just how fast they were going over the speed limit to be smashed into a wall. If these yankee wanna-be kids had worn a helmet, chances are.......

Power pole is at the corner of the brick wall. They hit the pole with such force it shattered the concrete on the pole. The impact point is on the outside of a slight bend it in road., they were clearly travelling at tremendous speed and could not take the bend.. The bitter irony is the cinderblock wall surrounds a cemetery.

RIP boys, such wasted life.

Eerily reminds me of advice my father gave me about driving fast and recklessly - "There is no prize for being the fastest man in the cemetery"

The result of failed parenting.

as is this comment. Kids do stupid things, it's part of being a kid.

RIP boys.

There, but for the grace of almost phenomenal luck, go I... Requiescat in pace, my young lads. As you have seen, there is nothing EASY about being a young male Human and, sad to say, it doesn't get any easier as the seques of Life unfold, just different walls and poles... but that 'immortality' of youth is the most intoxicating drug of all. I miss it greatly, albeit feeling the deep sadness for their loved ones of parental terror made real mitigates the loss. We will never know what potential greatness may have ended here stillborn.

Agreed WilliB, helmets are no silver bullet depending on the head they are attached too.

However if I may recommend Shoei Neotec 2...

I still ride but without the carefree abandon.

We’re they wearing helmets?

The article does not say, but helmets do not do miracles. Especially these half-helmets worn with a lose strap around the neck as seems to be fashionable by a lot of the young "yankees" I see around here.

Yes indeed, JeffLee, my local neighborhood Kochi, Ino, there is wide open roadways, only to lead into narrow confined spaces with energy and communications infrastructure littered incoherently.

These narrow spaces are shared with all forms of transport including pedestrians going about their business.

I zipped around London, when at college, on my prized Honda 750 K4, until I ended up in St Bartholomew's Hospital, my crash helmet saved my life. However both my hips were shattered.

Below the waist after numerus operations, its not a pretty sight, however I can walk, if a tad resembling an extra on Thunderbirds.

17 years old.

Condolences to the grief stricken families.

I assume the telephone poles are on the street, as they are in my neighborhood, as opposed to on a boulevard or sidewalk, ? I would crash into them too if I didn't swerve around them. Can't Japan do better than this on the infrastructure front?

Anything moved with less than three wheels isn’t a stable physical structure. Choose your ground vehicle out of trike up to tank.

In my experience the helmets are on their heads.

But the straps are flapping in the breeze.

Heck, plenty of adults doing the same thing.

How tragic. Like bigyen said we've all done dumb things when we had the invincibility of youth.

Commiserations to their family

Starting my day with this story is a reminder of how much suffering is stored up for us existing in this harsh world equipped only with our primate intelligence.

My experience with teenage motorcyclists are if they were wearing helmets, they would’ve been on the back of their necks (not on top of their heads)

Helmets ?

Apparently no.

RIP
