Huge crowds built up at Tokyo train stations, people battling for spots in jam-packed commuter trains.

I’m making my way to work in Tokyo now. The trains seem to be okay. My company had the common sense to tell us to stay at home.

Surely this is possible for many or even most workers?

Everyone except JR workers.

I am sure most of these people have enough unused day-off from work decided to "not be a burden" for his company even if it means supressing whatever common sense they have left.

The black company my Mrs works for called her at 7am and told her to get her butt into work. It took her nearly 3 hours to get from northern Chiba to Shinjuku and the company scolded her for being late. This is one of Japan's largest publishing companies with a nationwide staff of over 2,000 people including subsidiaries. What a bunch of buttholes! She is currently looking for a new job, of course.

Why don’t they just have a tree plow in front, like they have snow plow trains in front of trains in Russia? Trains are pretty heavy. If the track is clear they go, albeit slowly. In a disaster people need to move. Not to be trapped because NHK or transport companies are scared to be sued. Of course they are not worried about their customers being stranded miles from home and their families in typhoons or severe cold snowstorms, they just close the station and let them fend for themselves.

I left late on purpose and the Tokyo metro was not much fun this morning. Nothing running to the timetable, packed for that time in the morning, and 15 minutes longer on my journey.

Was it only me or was that one of the strongest storms I have seen in Tokyo? Kept us up until 3am, pulled up our astroturf on the balcony, and our mansion block was littered with tree leaves this morning.

Tigers - It was strong and yes it was much stronger than what has been seen in Tokyo for several years. I am glad it did not live up to what was expected. When this thing was developing I was thinking this would be much worse!

Had the same issue on the balcony...and more are coming? geeze....

Engr - the astroturf thing was bizarre.

Still without power or water here and those thieving toucans at TEPCO don't seem to be in any hurry to fix it.

Osaka was very calm in the am.

I went to the gym downtown and it was a sunny, warm day at noon too.

Only in the afternoon did it start to rain and even at its peak it really wasn’t much of anything at all.

Good to know its back to normal here in Kansai. Most storms just weaken and fizzle out when they get here.

I'm not sure how keeping a station open can help in severe weather situations, if the trains can't run.

Unless you mean for purposes of shelter?
