Two dead in automobile blaze in Tokyo

Two people died when they were trapped in their station wagon after it burst into flames on a highway in Fussa, Tokyo, on Monday night.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 8 p.m. Fuji TV quoted police as saying that witnesses saw the car pull over and the driver get out. Shortly thereafter, the car lit up and before the two passengers in the front and back seats had a chance to escape, the car was engulfed in flames. When police and firefighters arrived at the scene, the driver was nowhere to be found.

According to police, the fire began somewhere inside the engine block, causing the entire car to eventually burst into flames. Police said Tuesday they still have not been able to get in contact with the owner of the car. The two victims are believed to be a 66-year-old man and his 31-year-old daughter, police said, without giving further details.

Sounds fishy.

Station wagons have 4 doors, should they should have been able to escape quickly. How could an engine fire spread instantly throughout the interior?

and

they still have not been able to get in contact with the owner of the car.

Perhaps they should watch the movie Rasshomon for tips on how to a do seance properly.

So was the driver the owner or a carjacker/ murderer?

Why didn't the doors open? Child lock turned on in the back seat? Sounds strange to me

Unless the car literally exploded into flames (which they rarely do), I don’t understand how the passengers didn’t have time to get out – getting out of a car takes seconds. Unless they were asleep…or already dead. Why did the driver run away?

Surely there will be more to this story.

I do love JT commenters and their speculations when information is scarce, specifically how the car burst into flames.

Until then let's blame the stupid occupants for not escaping or the car maker for poor safety.

Geez.

According to the article, witnesses say the car burst into flames before they had a chance to get out.

Car's dont just explode into flames... something is wrong here

I concur. Unless we're on the set of a Hollywood action film, automobiles do not spontaneously burst into flames.

There is something extremely wrong with this incident, not the least being a driver who very clearly fled the scene.

Maybe not 'explode', but they can and do burst into flames at times. It's not the norm, but to say it doesn't happen is incorrect.

Resist the urge to play the armchair detective. There may or may not be more to this, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there is anything nefarious.

Strangerland: Engines yes, but where you sit.. no

I am a bit perplexed at how everyone has focused on the fire and pretty much ignored the fact that the driver bolted from the car just before it burst into flames, completely fled the scene and cannot be found.

That screams foul play.

As others have mentioned, there is something fishy with that story. Two people who are alive and not injured should be able to get out of a standing vehicle before being burned to death. I want to know what the driver has to say, once they catch him.

Driver ran away because the other two people were dead or incapacitated before the fire started. How is that for a theory?
