Two powerful typhoons, the 15th and 16th of the season, were heading toward southern Japan on Saturday afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Typhoon Atsani was expected to approach the Ogasawara island chain, some 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo, on Saturday night, with winds of up to 252 kilometers per hour, according to the meteorological agency. It is moving at about 15 kilometers per hour.
Typhoon Goni was forecast to approach the Sakishima island chain to the south on Sunday, it said.
Airlines announced possible flight delays and cancellations as the two typhoons neared.© (c) 2015 AFP
