Two women who were tied to each other with a rope jumped to their deaths from the 7th floor of an apartment in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, on Tuesday morning, police said.

According to police, the two women -- both aged 22 -- were found unconscious on the grounds of the apartment around 5:30 a.m. by a newspaper delivery man who called police. The two women were taken to hospital but died soon after arrival. Police say the two were tied to each other at the waist with a rope and were holding hands when found. A suicide note was found in the corridor on the 7th floor. Police said the two women had been classmates at junior high school.

so far nobody values these girls' 'loyal to the end' friendship.but i believe this was what they had in mind at the end. in these cases you should not scare other people by jumping onto street you know.i mean for children it must be a horror.do it private ,leave a message to police and then leave. respect public before you commit a suicide(do not spread poisonous to gas nieghbours), so we can at least respect your choice. although i dont say do it.

Wow! Fall off from the 7th floor and still able to land while holding hands. Simply amaaaaazing! That should definately go into the book of world records!

I've said it before if you are thinking of ending it all change your circumstance. If it's your job: quit, your school: leave, you owe money: disappear, your spouse or lover: dump em'. There is always a solution it just takes some courage. Hell go buy a plane tocket and get lost in some foreign country. I don't get it and I never will.

There is just way too much suicide here. It is the most selfish thing a person could do.

I think murder/rape is more selfish.

i think there are a lot of reasons why suicide rate in japan is high. we really cant blame them, coz basically its in their culture. for one, the society here is really prone to pressures. japanese are also known for their "gaman" mentality, they tend to supress their feelings until they can't contain it anymore and crack up. they are also quite perfectionist and are sensitive to shame and losing integrity. so the only way to fix their imperfect life is to reset it from scratch, thus committing suicide. this is based on their belief that after they die, they can renew their life in another being/form.

if somebody can just educate these people during their childhood years and instill in them that this belief is insane, plus family conseling improves, perhaps suicide rate in this country will lessen.

Well said my friend.Basically what i've been trying to sum up but couldnt quite get it into a setence. This suicide in particular is very sad in dead. If they could of just got some help i'm sure they could have lived a great life. I wish i could help these people who want "out"..

ive been reading a lot of suicide news in japan ever since i lived here and since it has already been prevalent, it doesn't surprise me anymore. but i still feel sad and pity them, as they dont understand that there is more to life than what it seemed to them. like these girls, at age 22 there is still a long path ahead to explore.

Sorry, I meant to say;" in a society with an economy grinding along like a broken-down fan and where most social intercourse...etc," The bad economy is certainly a big factor in all this.

When you live in a society where most social intercourse is through patterns and cultural expectations, enormous internal pressures are gonna build up. Worse, when there are only platitudes from govt. agencies as placebos at best, lots of people implode. Or the nutters explode as we see from recent events. Gonna be a tough summer... Dr. Nuts

There is just way too much suicide here. It is the most selfish thing a person could do. Is this a cultural reflection? Are we living in a country of selfish individuals? I can't work it out!

That must've been a really lowsy school!

Yep, murder-suicide.

Man! Forget this suicide s**t. I think the cops here are Weenies and don't do much of anything, except sit on their chairs and eat onigiri instead of doughnuts.

Life is too short. Forget suicide. I would be kicking some a**!

Tied up? Maybe it's a murder-suicide. If it were a suicide pact, why would the ropes be needed? Perhaps one of the two had an obsession over the other, fangirl style. The crazy one was the one grabbing the hand of her victim, maybe. Then a suicide note to cover her tracks, and voila.

That's my wild guess of the day.

So they survive a 7-story fall but die as soon as they get to the hospital? Moral: If you jump from a tall building, whatever you do DO NOT GO TO THE HOSPITAL. Once you get there: game over.

This reeks of a translation Kyodo would crap out. Will they never get this right? It's just not that hard.

I wonder is it another Japanese trait carried on from the samurai times? Such as in the way they act so timid today? Harikiri? Hmmm maybe they don't view suicide the same as ourself and when they feel they have failed such as the samurai they ended things? Just a guess...

Why doesn't the government look into this and take the required steps? We undertand competition and street factor into the decision but there shoud be counceling, psycs, support wheather it be job, housing... I don't know somthing can be done!

Good point. Japanese are a lonely people. Given the way this society has been set up is no surprise that some many people kill themselves. This is a sad story.

When i came to Japan it was indeed 'country of rising sun' and today? 'Suicide Shima'- why? what's wrong? Only j-people can answer.

Sagecat: Why do people do it you ask? I wish I knew? But given the empty platitudes from the agencies such as Health and Welfare I'd say a lack of any concern by others outside family is the real problem. Basically, the Japanese a very, very lonely people. the loneliest people on the damn planet in fact. Often they are lonely in their work and even their personal relationships and of course the snobbery surrounding mental illness precludes any serious attempts to look at the problem.

I agree with RD Laing in as much as these sufferings, if correctly dealt with and nursed through can be great teachers through life.

How sad. Why do people throw their life away as what seems to be the drop of a hat, in this country?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The solution to this horrible trend, of course, is for the Government to conduct another study.....

Another day another suicide in Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

With 30,000 plus suicides each year in Japan for a decade runnning, incidents like this one are so commonplace as to be questionably newsworthy.
