Typhoon Goni hits Okinawa after killing 19 in Philippines

They are refer to Typhoon 15 or 16. Typhoons in Japan are not named but are given a numbers during the season. The first Typhoon in 2015 in Japan is given the number one, (1) the second Typhoon is given the number two (2) and etc. When two Typhoon develop at the same time, the one with the highest intensity is given the next number in the sequence.

I'm with Yubaru on this one. I'm quite sure Noble meant that in his area in particular it was "weak", but the excuse that he doesn't watch TV (and hence doesn't know the extent of the damage elsewhere) doesn't fly since clearly he's online and it even says as much in the article.

There was nothing 'weak' about this storm, and it can still do a lot of damage. It killed quite a few people in the Philippines and was the strongest recorded in some parts of Okinawa, flipping over cars and downing utility poles (not wood, either!). Let's hope people stay safe and the storm doesn't do much more than it has, and try to limit comments like, "more hot air from the media" (like yesterday) or what have you.

Typhoons bring water to Okinawa, they are part of the natural cycle. There is nothing we can do but be prepared and protect ourselves during the storm.

I'm talking solely about effects felt in the south/central portions of the main island. Typically, I hunker down in my apartment for every typhoon until it passes. Better safe than sorry is my usual approach. This typhoon.... the winds are so weak right now that I just drove to A&W to get some burgers.

I've lived through well over 100 typhoons in my time on Okinawa. It's easy to underestimate even the "small" one's.

It was hardly a "weak" typhoon, not by any means. But I do believe you misunderstand what a "weak" typhoon is.

We had a windy day here on Okinawa island. We were fortunate that it didn't hit us directly.

This one was pretty weak and boring, as it really passed Okinawa far off to the west and didn't hit us directly....which is fine by me, less salt to wash off of my car afterwards.

I guess you never watch the local news do you? Cars were flipped over by the winds in Ishigaki and a concrete stee reinforced traffic signal was blown over as well. Not to mention a local hotel that had a door blown off it's hinges and the winds destroyed the lobby area, tearing out the ceiling.

Weak and boring? Maybe for parts of Okinawa, but other parts, and not to mention the deaths in the PI makes this a very deadly storm.

It's thinking like yours that makes people under-estimate the power that typhoons carry. Prepare for the worst, and you should be find, but this was hardly a "weak" typhoon by any estimates.

The storm, with sustained winds of 180 kph, was heading north toward Kyushu.

Mainland-centric reporting......it has been making a stop along the way at the main island of Okinawa and passing just about right over Kume Island and the Kerema Islands too.
