The Green Climate Fund aims to have ready its first set of projects for approval by its board at a meeting in November. Money is unlikely to start flowing for activities on the ground until next year, however.

Exactly which type of projects the GCF will choose to back remains unclear.

LOL. Give us money and we'll let you know, later, what the money was used for. Maybe.

@jeff198527 >Solar and wind power just aren't efficient enough to replace fossil fuels or nuclear power.

New figures from the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) on Tuesday reveal nearly 11.8GW of wind power was added to the grid across the European Union in 2014, accounting for 43.7% of all new electricity generation. In comparison, coal added 3.3GW of new capacity and gas added 2.3GW, securing wind power’s position as the fastest-growing new source of electricity in the bloc.

Exactly which type of projects the GCF will choose to back remains unclear, its mandate is to promote a shift toward low-emission and climate-resilient growth in developing countries, and help keep global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius

Far too many if's, but's and maybe's, billions are being pledged on political whims and fancies, without due diligence.

A little global warming is a good thing: more plants, more food, etc. But global COOLING has resulted in widespread famines in human history.

www.wattsupwiththat.com has tons of actual facts and data as opposed to the AlGorean nonsense cluttering the far-left media.

Global warming may be natural. During the Middle Ages both Asia and Europe saw major climate shifts. Not too many SUBs or coal-fired power plants in those days.

A massive wealth redistribution scam for "global warming" that has been paused for over 18 years.

@Luce-A I would have thought solar reflector power generation (heliostatic) would suit Japan well and put some money and jobs back into the countryside ... lots of steep slopes (and no noise/dead birds!).

These reflective solar arrays are usually in the desert and on the flat. The problem with them is the birds cannot see/feel the intense light and get roasted. Very few birds in the desert and some may think the mirrors are water from a distance.

A normal wind turbine is 1-2 MegaWatts now and the largest is 8MW. A collection of wind turbines could form a new spine of energy in Japan and connect everything. The average life of the generator is 17 years, before it is rebuilt.

Yeah, Japan is the world's largest creditor, but is broke. Libertarians don't live in reality. If you don't like Japan then "gaijin go home".

Al Gore said "God bless Japan" after Japanese Government $1.5 billion pledge to Green Climate Fund.

I have to read a newspaper from Japan to get away from the U.S. propaganda. Yes the climate change agenda is in high gear including shutting down U.S. coal burning power plants.

Still, isn't it a bit futile Japan doing anything more when China is still going through its early industrial age and pumping out an almighty clouds of pollutions into the region?

I'd be more worried about funds disappearing down a hole of Party corruption that the green lobby and Japan paying for it. The ecologists' work would see done by now.

Japan could buy a lot of wind turbines for $1.5 Billion.

Back on topic please.

1.5 billion would buy alot of homes for people, where is all this money coming from?

Simple answer, from mine and all the other people in Japan who pay taxes!

Oh and with something like 1/4 of all Japanese homes empty who needs to buy a home? Welcome to Japan, the land of folks who dont buy "used". (Ok over generalization,....but the fact remains the same!)

How on Earth can Japan afford this?

Why can't they? All Japanese debt is issued in Yen and Japan has re-invented the debt wheel and therefore everything is OK.... according to the nut job theorists.. some who post on here.

The truth is they can't, but the reality is that this is corporate welfare. Japan has very strict rules concerning who can or can't apply for ODA, which basically excludes non-Japanese companies. Some of this money indirectly finds its way back to the LDP coffers, with increased business donations to the LDP.

The sad thing about Japanese domestic politics in 2015, is how similar it is to Japanese domestic politics of 1980.

Sorry but humankind is doomed due to runaway and unstoppable agw. Not now but 30 generations from now the Climapocalypse begins. Its curtains for the human species in 500 yrs. Japan too. All the money in the world cannot stop agw. Too late. We did it to ourselves. Read a cli fi novel to learn why. Meanwhile enjoy the next 500 yrs.

Please confirm this is some sort of loan with independent verification and validation......

The Green crew will be rubbing their hands at the prospect of worldwide travel junkets on this money, probably planning them out right now.

All aboard international flights, 1st class for a party of 20 to visit some solar power 'project' in Latin America and then let's arrange tv coverage to show it in good light, minus the UN Green Climate Fund junket flights!

How on Earth can Japan afford this?

By manipulating and weakening Yen.
