U.N. climate fund gears up to deploy cash after Japan signs $1.5 bil pledge

The Green Climate Fund aims to have ready its first set of projects for approval by its board at a meeting in November. Money is unlikely to start flowing for activities on the ground until next year, however.

Exactly which type of projects the GCF will choose to back remains unclear.

New figures from the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) on Tuesday reveal nearly 11.8GW of wind power was added to the grid across the European Union in 2014, accounting for 43.7% of all new electricity generation. Global warming may be natural. During the Middle Ages both Asia and Europe saw major climate shifts. Not too many SUBs or coal-fired power plants in those days.

@Luce-A I would have thought solar reflector power generation (heliostatic) would suit Japan well and put some money and jobs back into the countryside ... lots of steep slopes (and no noise/dead birds!).

These reflective solar arrays are usually in the desert and on the flat. The problem with them is the birds cannot see/feel the intense light and get roasted. Very few birds in the desert and some may think the mirrors are water from a distance.

A normal wind turbine is 1-2 MegaWatts now and the largest is 8MW. A collection of wind turbines could form a new spine of energy in Japan and connect everything. The average life of the generator is 17 years, before it is rebuilt.

Why can't they? All Japanese debt is issued in Yen and Japan has re-invented the debt wheel and therefore everything is OK.... according to the nut job theorists.. some who post on here.

The truth is they can't, but the reality is that this is corporate welfare. Japan has very strict rules concerning who can or can't apply for ODA, which basically excludes non-Japanese companies. Some of this money indirectly finds its way back to the LDP coffers, with increased business donations to the LDP.

The sad thing about Japanese domestic politics in 2015, is how similar it is to Japanese domestic politics of 1980.
