Am really surprise nobody has gone out and salvaged it. It has been in the sea for a year, it is clean of excess radiation. Just take a radiation level reader, people are scared STUPID. Ever wonder about the level of Dioxins in your drinking water?

I thought a mile was 1.6 kilometers.

A giant floating piece of trash where the previous owner and origin is known...and yet no one is responsible for it? Bizarre.

If the ship had been purposely abandoned, it would be the owners responsibility... but when the cause is a natural disaster there are loosely written laws that free the owner of any salvage obligation. It's floating, but is a rotted rust bucket that will most likely become target practice for the Navy before it reaches land.

You're correct - it is. The reporter got it wrong.

Like a previous post mentioned the Navy should use it for target practice since the owner does not want it. Compared to what BP put in the gulf oil wise a few hundred gallons of fuel is nothing. It would make an excellent 50 cal. training target. The US needs to be prepared on how to handle a lot more debris coming in the future. I hope not to see a lot of trouble from the US, they need to just clean it up and if something of importance is salvageable try and get it back to the owner if they want it.
