With around 12,000 Marines, China is a formidable potential foe, say military experts.

But they haven't really been tested. Numbers mean nothing here.

"China should “not be invited” because it’s a “competitor” to the United States

I disagree. The United States is not attempting to expand territorial sovereignty and control in east Asia. The correct word would be "adversary".

It's still a lot of troops, competent or otherwise. More than enough to cause headaches for any country they are up against.

RAN and JMSDF don't really compare to what Marines can front up. Or China.

JMSDF has been primarily set up to defend local waters. It has 3 amphibious ships, and they can't actually perform beach landings, they sit offshore and their helos/hovercraft ferry everything.

Thanks to China, the JMSDF is recently starting to show more focus on marine activities, not to invade (it's ridiculous to consider Japan invading anybody with their current equipment but this is JT), but to hold/regain outlying islands.

This writer has already hinted some weeks back that a period of one month and 20 days from 10 June 2015 to 30 July 2015 could likely trigger a graver concern in or near sea involving ownership and oil and gas. It seems likely that South China Sea could be perhaps one of key such places. In addition, oil and gas spilling or major volcano eruption at vulnerable places during the said period having substantial impact on economy could be in spot. Last three months of the current year could also be critical in relation to said dispute. These likely astrological trends are indicative and not deterministic suggesting that appropriate and sufficient human strategy can make the difference in changing the course of events to happen.

Patton, MacArthur, Nimitz, Puller, Schwarzkopf, West Point, . . . It's the leadership and capabilities as a whole which is to admire. Every served your country? Or do ya pay "others" to handle your business?

Wayne, Willis, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Kids from Fame, ...It's the myth of American Exceptionalism that will be its downfall. Ever worn tights and greasepaint?

Did they fight at Stalingrad, stormed Berlin or fought IJA in Manchuria? You know, Chinese, backed by Soviets fought for their country in 1945 pretty successfully. That is why Americans are not some sort of ideal for them.

"Ever served your country?"

Yes. What about you ?

@Wc626, there are many people pushing up the daffodils now, thanks to US special forces, though mostly gloated about in a less public manner.

Those are the Nationalists who are now in Taiwan, and they weren't backed by the Soviets (the Soviets at the time were too busy fighting for their life in Europe against Nazi Germany - they really only entered the war against Japan for a few months after Germany was defeated, but by that point, they didn't need to help the Nationalists). Most of the assistance to the China Nationalists came from the Allies, particularly the US Pacific forces, British forces from India, and Australia.

Either way, the Nationalists were losing to the Japan forces in the beginning until they got bolstered by the Allies, then they were able to push Japan's forces back and just hold them off long enough for the Allies to island-hop their way towards Japan.

The usual CCP attempt to take the credit of the Nationalist Chinese under Chiang Kai Shek for fighting the IJA. It's very funny when today's "China" claims to have been a US "ally" in WWII, when they attacked and defeated the Nationalist Chinese who were our alles, fought against us in thr Korean War and supported North Vietnam. When has Communist "China" EVER been a U.S. ally?

Funny how you mention only one year-1945. That's cause from '39 the IJA intensified their plundering.
