Those of you who are saying "get U.S troops off of Okinawa" have no idea what you are talking about. Okinawa has a tourist economy. The united states brings in huge revenue to the local Okinawan businesses annually. I know this because I'm stationed there. Every time bases on Okinawa get put on lockdown the locals beg to have the restrictions lifted because local businesses lose a good portion of their revenue. The Okinawan economy has been intertwined with the money that U.S Forces bring to the island for the past 70 years.

"Extremely regrettable" are the only words Japanese politicians ever utter when something goes wrong, and are next to meaningless by their constant usage, as are most polite terms in Japanese. It means that nothing has ever changed, and that nothing will ever change. "Change" being the only "trouble" the Japanese psyche can conceive. Those aboard the helicopter are lucky to be alive. Good job by the flight crew to find space on the deck, as this appears to have been part of a board and search training operation in which the boarding team uses lines to get to the ship's deck while the helicopter hovers overhead.

Okinawa is a tourist spot for many, they have no need for US forces on the island. I had always thought that its a national shame to have foriegn forces on our soil!

Marines are fathers, brothers or Sons of decent and honest people of US. Sending Marines to heaven intentionally with one way ticket is unforgivable crime. Marines died more in training instead of being killed by enemy.

Yo Marines! Your folks lives are worthier than that piece of junk which loves the ground more than sky.

Osprey is the killing machine for Marines. Sleeping with Tiger is safer for Marines or Japanese servicemen rather than flying with that junks. It has proven unsafe and frequent crashing record.

There are things in Okinawa that are way more dangerous, but nobody's protesting/complaining about them.

Okinawa has had the highest rate of accidents causing injury or death involving drunk drivers in Japan for 24 consecutive years.

There are so many complaints/protests about dangers caused by the American military presence in Okinawa, but nobody's suggesting the removal of local drunk drivers, who cause way more deaths and injuries each year.

I wish the seven injured a speedy recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

For people who want to pretend things like that never happened, lacking respect towards the victims and their families:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalese_cable_car_disaster_(1998)

I repeat, they never paid properly for their crime. Never.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

And enough with the, "It could have happened in a civilian area!" comments by others because it did NOT!

Implying something like that never happened...

I guess you never heard about "La strage del Cermis". And believe me, it's not the same effect for people when military planes are involved, rather than civilian planes. In the case of "La strage del Cermis" it was also a criminal act, but those American guys never paid properly for what they did.

“For those who live near (U.S.) bases, it’s a serious matter,”

Even less would be living near them if you adhered to the relocation plan that Japan has agreed to THREE TIMES (including the Okinawan Governor). And enough with the, "It could have happened in a civilian area!" comments by others because it did NOT! But an airplane crashed recently in Tokyo, did it not? killing a woman in her apartment and two on board the plane. Should we get all airplanes out of Tokyo? Because there is a MUCH higher chance of accident above regular airliners in terms of hitting a populated area and of many dying.

Please get our people out of that damm place, don't know why I have to keep paying taxes supporting Japan

I hate helicopters but I really hate those stupid, weird OSPREY contraptions!!! Last December, while on vacation in Okinawa, heard the weirdest sound in my life, one of them crazy OSPREY and if they are dangerous down in Okinawa, I can not wait until they bring them up to Yokota, right in TOKYO!!! By the way, glad no one is dead from these HELICOPTER accidents and also that no OKINAWAN CIVILIANS were involved.

Is that a whining engine noise! No it's just the locals.

-1 ( +5 / -5 )

Better stop all those flights bringing in tourists as well.

Recently I would take the helicopters crashing in the ocean over the tourists from Asia. At least with the military you know what you are getting. With tourists, particularly from one country with a HUGE population they are without manners to say the least.

At least the military says "yes ma'm" or "yes sir" before "f" -ing you.

Will put the politics aside for the moment. Will take the humanitarian high road instead and hope all those who have been injured recover quickly.

It's a tragedy itself

Well, here I was replying to a guy who said there were some casualties between people aboard. If nobody died, fortunately it's not a tragedy, but a potential one, specially if it was crashed against a populated area.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I hope there were no fatalities and that all those injured have a swift recovery.

Hmmm, Army H-60 landing on a warship off the coast? The Army isn't usually dropping personnel on Navy ships. Was this an aircraft from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, maybe moving some Special Forces guys from Tori Station out for some maritime training? That's a complete guess on my part.......

Updates a bit confusing.

Happy nobody died.

5 ( +4 / -0 )

It's a tragedy itself, but you'll admit it could become a bigger tragedy if the helicopter was crashed against a populated area. Since apparently in two days we got three incidents involving US military (one in Germany, two in Japan), don't you think Americans should control more properly their own stuff, at least? What about more safety checks, for example?

Just please, get the US military OFF of Okinawa."

Yes, please. Move the US military to clean and efficient mainland Japan. Let US dollars help their economy with jobs, money going into the local economy whilst helping Japan defend itself.

The poorest prefecture in Japan will become even poorer so they can continue to play the victim for another 50 years rather than actually changing their pathetic circumstances.

I dreaded to hear this news. This will only strengthen Onagas position on the termination of the construction.

Again? This happened on 11/08*

Sorry, I meant on 08/11 (in Italian it's vice-versa, so...).

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Just please, get the US military OFF of Okinawa.

The next time it might be a populated area.

Two tragedies could happen, if both of them were crashed against some houses.

Black Hawk down, tough luck. Glad it did not injure okinawans.

Damn.
