I hope they don’t spend it all at once…

Wow, you guys are complaining about $20 per day, had they arrived in the US they would get FULL PUBLIC AIDE with a furnish apartment plus $900-1500 per month per child up to $5000.00 per month for a family of 4.

Do you mind proving it? Is this arrangement for Ukranian evacuees only?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Holy cow, 2400 a day? Are they expected to eat only cup ramen and tofu for protein?

I spend at least 4,000 just to go to the bar after work.

*2400 for one adult a day * is ordinary Japanese living cost a day. Why do these evacuees have to live better than ordianry Japanese with our tax? Which country in the world could give money to evacuees to go to the bar?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Roughly $20.00 (US) per day, to live in one of the most expensive countries in the world

Obviously This person has NEVER traveled other countries and dosn't know how expensive their prices in Europe and America. Ignorance is bliss.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Don't waste Japanese tax. Japanese people are unemployed poor and suffering. Increase salary of Japanese men. Don't waste blood tax. Anti-japanese government.

I spend at least 4,000 just to go to the bar after work. That used to be 5 nights a week. Let's hope they also don't need to pay for electric, gas, and water in their donated apartments. I'm shocked how they can be expected to basically leave everything behind, come here with nothing and live on that. Shameful.

May want to adjust those numbers to a smaller size ‘household’ for the ‘current’ era? According to the “Statistical Handbook of Japan” 2021: - https://www.stat.go.jp/english/data/handbook/c0117.html -

From the 1920s - mid ‘50s, the average number of household members remained about 5.” -

*- “However, due to the increase in one-person households and nuclear-family households since the 1960s, the average size of households was down significantly in 1970, to 3.41 members. The number of household members has continued to decline, dropping to 2.33 in 2015. Although the Japanese population shifted into the declining phase, the number of households is expected to continue to increase for some years to come, as the size of the average household will shrink at a slow pace. The number of households is projected to peak in 2023 and then decrease thereafter*.” -

Glad to help when I can.

It’s more than what the citizens of Japan got from the Government during the 3/11 disaster and the latest pandemic as well ! The Fukushima evacuees received way less than this!!!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Ridiculous to see folks complaining that Japan is doing TOO much to help the refugees and should give this small amount of financial help to its own people. A better approach might be to call for donations from the private sector, if one is ashamed of using taxpayer money to help folks

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

What?! What about helping your own citizens who are struggling due to the corona circus instead of some able-bodied refugees? They are out of the war-zone, time to contribute to society.

So, they will have a bread and water diet, what is that in Japan a rice and some tofu diet?

Good luck if they need cloths or shoes.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

2400 yen sounds like lot of money when multiply by 10..

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Thanks for the down votes, clearly no one reads the article anymore and votes based on the title

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

I'm wondering if they had to quarantine for x number of days and were they vaccinated and tested before entering Japan?

It is less than the minimum welfare here. For only a few refugees.

You should check again the minimum welfare in Japan and deduct the cost J-govts= You all tax payers are shouldering.

Check the break-downs of 生活保護 livelihood protection.

You can ignore the the same old news about free riders those receiving it, for now, abusing the system, by wasting into Pachinko, for example, who don't have intention whatsoever to improve their lives here

1 ( +2 / -1 )

That's nearly enough for three meals per day at McD.

Note that the one who are receiving it are the refugees who came officially through the government free pass.

It does not cost anything in term of taxes.

JY 2400 p/day sounds really low. But that's approx JY 73008 per month. As an allowance for doing nothing. This is in addition to food expenses, medical expenses, Japanese language lessons, and job search help provided by the J-Govt. And all this without having to be in a war zone wondering if you'll see the light of day tomorrow.

with the government separately shouldering their medical expenses and Japanese language lessons and also helping them gain employment.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Yes. Unless you want to go to Ukraine and fight Putin, this is the least we can do to help.

Didn't realize those were the two options, thanks for the information.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I'm unemployed now but a freelancer so

I can't get anything.

¥2,400 a day would be nice !

Better than nothing.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Not so bad, that’s significantly more than I have.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

@TokyoJoe I just wish you won't experience what they've been through. It's better to donate rather than sleeping at the metro stations to save my life from bombs.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So total is what? Around 2man for the lot of them?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

While staying temporarily at hotels arranged by the government, evacuees aged 12 and above will be given 1,000 yen per day while those below 12 will receive 500 yen a day, both excluding food expenses, according to the agency.

Actually, not too bad, considering their room and board will be taken care of. I know it does not replace their homes back in Ukraine, but I'm sure the accommodations are in better shape than their original homes.

Roughly $20.00 (US) per day, to live in one of the most expensive countries in the world.

This is what you get when you abuse your own language :/ "refugee" seems to equal "your majesty" these days...

With 4.600円 I could fill 2 large baskets at the local Gyomu super with groceries from all over the world, but this allowance already excludes food expenses, hospital, rent etc. so maybe not that bad for now.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

¥2.450 a day? That's about £15... 15 quid a day? In Japan?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

20 people. We're fed the pictures of them arriving and several times the news repeats refugees, Ukraine, Japan. Then wait a few days and release a story about how much financial support they will get. Repeat again, Ukraine, Japan, refugees. People paying limited attention (most people) then think great, Japan is doing a great job and is accepting refugees from Ukraine. A friend of mine expressed the opinion that maybe there would be more strain on the housing market because Japan is accepting Ukrainian refugees. LoL. People really do lap it up.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

So we are paying for them through our taxes?

Don't worry, Kremlin will (have to) cover all the expenses for the refugees. Спасибо!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

i have never heard about support of wn citizens first while many of them are having hardest times in their lives to fight with lowered salaries, losing of jobs, houses, damaged relationships, fightning hard to work save pay bills taxes and school fees...

fighting hard to pay bills certainly makes life difficult, and people in that situation should be able to turn to their government for help.

But if paying your bills is the biggest of your worries, you’re not doing too bad.

Try fighting literally for your life; sheltering as bombs drop around you; starving in a basement because it’s impossible to go out to find food and water; being shot at as you try to flee; being raped by gangs of drunken soldiers in front of your kids; having to bury family members in the garden; returning to your bombed-out home after the orcs have left, to find it and the bodies strewn around it boobytrapped in an attempt to kill and maim even more; not needing to pay school fees because your children are dead.

Japan can and should do a lot more to help those in need. No one in Japan today has it as bad as the people of Ukraine at the moment.

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

The war should be over soon. So they will be able to return long before the 6 months are up. However, those from the south and east will probably be returning to lands under Russian control.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

So we are paying for them through our taxes?

Yes. Unless you want to go to Ukraine and fight Putin, this is the least we can do to help.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Generous. They must be having a high old time on this.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

.

TokyoJoe : So we are paying for them through our taxes?

.

It's a rhetorical question !

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

The average Ukrainian make 240 dollars,a month,Putin has destroyed their ,it will shrink from 200 billion to 100billion Google Ukrainian GDP

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

So they can't work but have to live on 1000 yen a day? How is that possible?

why not just give them the opportunity to work and let them earn as much as they want?

Please read the article first

5 ( +6 / -1 )

20 refugees, with 6 more coming. I don’t think it would be hard to find jobs for 26 people

you do realize they are mostly young women and Japanese men like Eastern European women when they go to snack bars.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Within a family, the first member would receive 2,400 yen and the second member 1,600 yen per day.

I would have thought they could pay every adult family member the same allowance .

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Japan being Japan, well, the manual is still opened and followed and all that red tape reels off into the distance not occupied by any more than 20 Ukrainians. So generous!

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

why not just give them the opportunity to work and let them earn as much as they want?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Well, this is good, but it's not very much money.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

So they can't work but have to live on 1000 yen a day? How is that possible?

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

20 refugees, with 6 more coming. I don’t think it would be hard to find jobs for 26 people

5 ( +9 / -4 )

In return, usually their wives can only afford ¥36000 a month pocket money for them.

That's much more than what I get.

I'd like 2,400 yen/day too.

5 ( +12 / -7 )

2,400 Yen is more than than what i get per day on unemployment benefit here in the United Kingdom.

I get about 1,800 Yen at today's exchange rate per day.

But 2,400 Yen per day is better than nothing and they are now safely out of the war zone.

But they still have family and friends in the hell of a war zone.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

There is no shortage of needy Japanese families and children living below 2,400 yen/day.

agree 100%. And whose fault is that? Whose been in power since the end of the war?

Spend more of our taxes on them instead.

Ha! You really think the LDP gives a hoot about the Japanese people? these people are blue bloods who cannot see past their own divine existence and who use racism and nationalism to keep them in power and cover up their screw ups.

they don't care about the Japanese people, and the only reason they are letting the Ukrainian refugees in and giving them aid is because its going to score THEM brownie points on the international stage.

-3 ( +13 / -16 )

Typical Damn if Japan doesn't, Damn if Japan does and Damn if Japan doesn't for others and Damn whatever Japan does

2 ( +17 / -15 )

Good luck to them, compared to refugees going to countries near the Ukraine these guys got the golden ticket

It sounds so true. Starting over in Japan is indeed a privilege. Yet, we also have to remember the great sacrifice made by Ukrainian people in the name of the West with their brave defiance against the cruel. The effect of this would be worth following in near feature.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Well, 6 months of support isn't so bad. Let's hope they find work soon and able to support themselves. I have no issue with government supporting them, but that doesn't mean forever. Eventually they are gonna have to pay rent and tax.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

There is no shortage of needy Japanese families and children living below 2,400 yen/day.

Spend more of our taxes on them instead.

3 ( +14 / -11 )

Why not ¥2.450?

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

I am sure they are grateful for any help given.

I used to calculate ¥1,100 yen a day per family member when handing over the month’s living expenses to the wife. That was back when I had a regular income. Nowadays that is way out of reach.

14 ( +15 / -1 )

i have never heard about support of wn citizens first while many of them are having hardest times in their lives to fight with lowered salaries, losing of jobs, houses, damaged relationships, fightning hard to work save pay bills taxes and school fees...ZERO support, bad luck that they are not Ukrainians so cant be posted as gov propaganda of Japan Inc...

-3 ( +11 / -14 )

I guess they will have to shop at the Dollar Store.

-6 ( +9 / -15 )

Good luck to them, compared to refugees going to countries near the Ukraine these guys got the golden ticket, we forget how lucky we are to live in a country with such great food, low crime rate and where people generally leave you alone(except on the yamanote line)..

14 ( +21 / -7 )

So we are paying for them through our taxes?

Yes, obviously. Do you not know where government money comes from or how government works everywhere on Earth?

24 ( +26 / -2 )

So we are paying for them through our taxes?

If I had more control over where my taxes went, helping those in need would be one of them. I also agree with @Rivera, though. Our taxes should also go to help those already in Japan who are struggling day by day.

17 ( +20 / -3 )

So we are paying for them through our taxes?

Why are you asking questions you already know the answer to? You've been around long enough to know.

13 ( +25 / -12 )

Roughly $20.00 (US) per day, to live in one of the most expensive countries in the world.

0 ( +21 / -21 )

Just to set things straight: all"refugees"so far (about 500 persons) entered Japan on tourist visas, are not entitled by default to any medical support and need to apply for the refugees status and everything that comes with it later.

12 ( +16 / -4 )

Ukraine evacuees to get up to ¥2,400 a day as living allowance in Japan

I wonder how this compares to other nations accepting more refugees.

Ones of less economic means than the 3rd largest economy and with lower costs of living.

Japan needs to seriously look at a UBI.

*
-7 ( +4 / -11 )

I hope someone pays their rent. What a pittance, without knowing the details!

-13 ( +9 / -22 )

UBI in the making

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

So we are paying for them through our taxes?

-16 ( +19 / -35 )

The Government should also be that kind and help their own people having a hard time living day by day here in Japan
